A short life and five years of recordings offer a deep dive into the work of the imaginative and enigmatic artist, and this week we'll listen to some of those documents and celebrate the life and music of Eric Dolphy, born June 20, 1928, in Los Angeles, CA. Ìý

Walt Dickerson: Mystery and Space
Walt Dickerson stunned listeners in the 1960's with spacious, thick, and exact tones on the vibraphone, then disappeared from the scene by '66. Ten years later, Dickerson emerged with an exploratory spirit for new sounds in improvisation on studio recordings for Steeplechase and other overseas labels. Trios with bassist Richard Davis, jaw-dropping early quartets, and sonic adventures with Sun Ra, on recordings this week from one of jazz's most unique voices of the vibraphone.
