Norman Granz' Jazz at the Philharmonic
American record producer and concert presenter Norman Granz introduced his now-legendary Jazz at the Philharmonic series in 1944. Concerts from leading artists were performed at the Philharmonic Auditorium in Los Angeles, CA, and Carnegie Hall in New York, NY, among other important venues. JATP played a pivotal role in advancing the cause of racial integration, popularizing jazz, and emphasizing live improvisation in performance. This week on the Jazz Break at Noon, we celebrate Independence Day with music from a significant milestone in the development of jazz. Artists for the playlist include Nat King Cole, Illinois Jacquet, Buddy Rich, Ella Fitzgerald, Charlie Parker, Lester Young, Flip Phillips, Mary Lou Williams, Buck Clayton, and more.

The Legacy of George Lewis & the New Orleans Revival
Born as Joseph Louis Francois Zenon on July 13, 1900, in New Orleans, LA, clarinetist and bandleader George Lewis was performing in prominent bands throughout the 1920's and decades to follow, before leading the New Orleans revival. Lewis performed regularly at Preservation Hall, and led the famed venue's house band. This week on the Jazz Break at Noon, we'll listen to selections from numerous Lewis recordings, with an emphasis on the Mosaic Records box of his complete Blue Note recordings.

Drum Master Philly Joe Jones
Born July 15, 1923, in Philadelphia, PA, drummer and bandleader Philly Joe Jones set a new standard for bebop drummers throughout the 1950's. His highly expressive, articulate, and fluid approach across his instrument can be heard on a wide variety of recordings, in particular as part of the "first great quintet" with Miles Davis. Recordings of Philly Joe Jones as collaborator and leader, all this week on the Jazz Break at Noon.

The Roots of Jazz Guitar with Charlie Christian
Born July 29, 1916, in Bonham, TX, guitarist Charlie Christian took the electric guitar out of the rhythm section and into the spotlight with a single-string technique and amplification that rocked the Benny Goodman sextet and orchestra out of the 1930's. Christian's tremendous influence on the instrument's role in jazz is incalculable. We'll hear Christian and his deep impact on the electric guitar, all this week on the Jazz Break at Noon, with newly discovered tracks. Ìý Ìý
