The Fulbright Program offers incredible opportunities for students, faculty, and alumni at universities across the United States to study, teach, and conduct research abroad. It’s a chance to immerse yourself in new cultures and make long-lasting connections with individuals around the world.

Meet six of our recent Fulbright scholars and �԰��'s Fulbright Program adviser and see how their experiences have shaped their academic and professional journeys.

Jenny Browne, MFA | Northern Ireland

Jenny Browne is returning to Northern Ireland for a second Fulbright Scholarship, receiving the 2023-24 Fulbright-Queens University Belfast Scholar Award in Irish Literature. Her project, "The Habit of Looking: A Survey of Northern Irish Ekphrasis" focuses on developing research, writing, and community engagement components in the context of Northern Irish poetry.

The project includes a comprehensive archive analysis of ekphrastic poems—poems written about other art forms—and a comparative critical essay exploring the shifts in intention and positionality between contemporary poets and Northern Irish poets during “The Troubles,” a decades-long series of ethno-nationalist conflicts between British loyalists and Irish nationalists in Northern Ireland.

Browne’s first Fulbright experience in Northern Ireland was interrupted by COVID-19, leaving some of her work incomplete. However, her connections and collaborations continued virtually, leading to projects such as a short film and a long poem based on a painting in the Ulster Museum. These ongoing projects prompted her to reapply for the Fulbright and continue her work there. Browne is excited to exhibit a visual erasure and collage sequence inspired by James Joyce’s Ulysses at the Museum of Literature in Dublin this fall.

Browne highlights the importance of welcoming new experiences, whether they involve trying different things or traveling somewhere you’ve never been to. Browne believes such opportunities broaden our perspectives and encourage us to engage more actively with the world around us. “I think anytime you have the opportunity to step outside of your own habits and patterns, whether exploring a new discipline or a new geographic place, you open yourself up to a more active state of both response and imagination,” said Browne. Among her most memorable experiences, she recalls having coffee with Van Morrison, one of Belfast’s most famous artists and one of her musical heroes. She also enjoyed exploring Northern Ireland’s incredible landscapes by foot, bike, and boat.

Immersed in Ireland’s literary tradition, she found joy in collaborating with local poets and scholars, even beginning a new hybrid poetry and prose book set in Belfast. This year, she is introducing a new Beyond the Classroom course titled "Writing (in) Place," which includes a two-week study abroad trip to Ireland and Northern Ireland. Browne’s time in Northern Ireland has profoundly shaped her teaching at �԰��, allowing her to bring back new perspectives and experiences to share with her students.

Jorge Colazo, Ph.D. | Colombia

Jorge Colazo received a faculty Fulbright Scholarship to teach at the Industrial University of Santander (UIS) in Bucaramanga, Colombia. There, he trained faculty on Collaborative Online International Learning (COIL), a method that Colazo had previously taught at �԰��. COIL connects students and professors in different countries for collaborative projects and discussions. Colazo also led masterclasses for Master of Business Administration and industrial engineering students during his time at UIS.

Colazo’s Fulbright experience has opened doors for potential joint research projects and further exchanges between faculty and students from both UIS and �԰��. He believes that international experiences like the Fulbright program significantly enhance one’s personal, teaching, and research skills.

“Still, I believe that every international experience adds to your skills as a person, teacher and researcher, and I wish all students and faculty at �԰�� could take advantage of opportunities such as the various Fulbright programs available,” Colazo says.

Colazo serves as the associate dean at the Michael Neidorff School of Business, where he is also an associate professor teaching courses in the new minor in supply chain management. His background and experience in chemical engineering and operations management made him a sought-after consultant for companies such as Exxon, Toyota, and Unilever.

Jason Johnson, Ph.D. | Germany | �԰��'s Fulbright Program Adviser

As �԰��'s Fulbright program adviser, Jason Johnson is crucial in guiding �԰�� students through the Fulbright application process. With the help of Gina Pham and Sabrina Cortez from the Center for International Engagement, as well as co-advisor Jenny Browne from the English department, Johnson recruits students to apply for Fulbright scholarships in the fall of their senior year. He meets with applicants, advises them on their applications, provides feedback, organizes the campus interview process, and completes written assessments of their applications.

Johnson received a Fulbright Scholarship to study in Berlin during graduate school. He wrote his dissertation on a small village in Germany called Mödlareuth, which was divided by the Iron Curtain during the Cold War. The northern portion of the village was situated in East Germany, while the southern portion was situated in West Germany.

Recognizing the highly competitive nature of Fulbright, Johnson highlighted the importance of applicants being knowledgeable about the country they wish to work in and having compelling reasons for their choice. He advises students to start thinking about and researching potential Fulbright opportunities in their sophomore or junior years. By June 1 of the summer before their senior year, interested students must submit a one-page statement of intent outlining their chosen country and reasons for applying. The completed application is then due by September 20 of their senior year.

Johnson highlights the strong support team at �԰��, including Pham and Cortez, who leads a summer Zoom circle to help students work on their application statements. He encourages any interested students to reach out for guidance and support. “In the end, Fulbright is a life-changing experience, and �԰�� has an outstanding team to help students put together their applications,” Johnson says.

Acacia Oyler '23 | Greece

Acacia Oyler ’23 received a Fulbright scholarship to teach in Greece. With majors in ancient Greek and history, and minors in ancient Mediterranean studies and museum studies, Oyler is eager to explore the intersections of the past and present.

From Blanco, Texas, Oyler’s academic interests were sparked by a chance enrollment in an ancient Greek course during her freshman year at �԰��. This led to a deep fascination with ancient texts and the human experiences they convey, especially those related to gendered experiences and stereotypes in the Greek world. As a junior, she studied classics and modern Greek in Athens, Greece, an experience that cemented her passion.

Oyler’s Fulbright fellowship in Greece has only furthered her interest in the Ancient Greek world. During her undergraduate studies here at �԰��, Oyler’s studies on the dynamics surrounding gender in ancient Greek literature culminated in her thesis on gendered portrayals of suicide in Hellenistic and Imperial epigrams. Through these research experiences, Oyler sought new ways of reframing historical narratives for modern audiences to highlight marginalized voices.

For Oyler, one of the most rewarding aspects of her Fulbright experience has been sharing her small-town Texas background with her students in Greece, offering them a more nuanced view of American life beyond the stereotypes portrayed in media. This exchange has led to meaningful discussions and a broader understanding of life in different parts of the world.

Another particularly memorable project for Oyler was a pilot class on “Decolonizing Thanksgiving,” where Oyler led high school students in exploring the holiday’s history and present-day meaning. This workshop encouraged students to critically analyze historical sources and challenge popular myths surrounding the holiday, a powerful experience for Oyler and her students.

Oyler plans to continue blending her research on ancient Greece with modern perspectives, ultimately striving to incorporate diverse perspectives—from the past and present—into her research. Outside of teaching English at Athens College, Oyler has also spent time interning at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens and the Museum of Cycladic Art, where she has been able to work directly with ancient artifacts, bringing her academic interests to life. Post-Fulbright, Oyler plans to pursue a master’s degree in classics at CU Boulder, with the eventual goal of earning a Ph.D. and teaching at the university level.

Maria Pia Paganelli, Ph.D. | Chile

Economics professor Maria Pia Paganelli will return to Chile for her second Fulbright Scholarship in Fall 2024. In Chile, Paganelli will continue her research on the origins of free banking in Chile, a country with a notable history of this banking system during the nineteenth century. During her first Fulbright Scholarship, Paganelli’s research examined the transition from free banking to central banking in Chile and to see if the thoughts of Adam Smith, a Scottish economist credited as being “the father of economics,” had any influence on that debate.

The United States operates on a central banking system, known to us as the Federal Reserve, which has the authority to issue currency, regulate banks, and control monetary policy. In contrast, free banking systems consist of multiple private banks that can issue their banknotes and compete with each other in the financial market. Chile had a relatively long and successful history of free banking during the second half of the nineteenth century. However, Chile transitioned to a central banking system in the early twentieth century, with the Central Bank of Chile established in 1925.

During Paganelli’s first Fulbright, she discovered that the free banking laws in Chile resembled the characteristics of free banking that Smith described as successful for Scotland. For Paganelli’s second Fulbright, she will investigate whether Smith’s ideas on free banking took hold in Chile with the introduction of free banking laws.

Despite the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic and lockdowns in Chile during her first Fulbright experience in Spring 2021, she still had a positive and memorable experience thanks to the support of her Chilean colleagues. For Paganelli, her Fulbright experience in Chile was personally fulfilling and greatly contributed to her ongoing research endeavors.

J'Leen Saeger, Ph.D. | El Salvador

J’Leen Saeger, a Spanish language and literature professor here at �԰��, has received a Fulbright scholarship to teach at the José Simeón Cañas Central American University (UCA) in San Salvador, El Salvador, in January of 2025. There, Saeger will teach TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) courses, mentor UCA faculty, and conduct workshops on developing effective lesson plans and innovative teaching strategies. Her ultimate goal is to establish an exchange program for students and professors from both universities to collaborate both in person and online.

Saeger was inspired to apply for a Fulbright scholarship after hearing about her colleague’s experiences as a Fulbrighter in Brazil. Despite finding the application process to be somewhat lengthy, she found the process to be quite manageable. Her advice for any students or faculty considering applying is “to get laser-focused on what you want to do or contribute, and then write the essays and the proposal from the heart.”

Saeger chose El Salvador because of the country’s need for TEFL instructors and her prior experience teaching English in Colombia from 2018-19. In El Salvador, Saeger is excited about the opportunity to experience new cultures and meet new people. At UCA, she plans to host weekly game nights and a monthly book club to build long-lasting bonds with her colleagues. Saeger is also thrilled that her daughters, Brylee and Ashlyn, will be accompanying her and attending school there, enhancing their Spanish-speaking skills and broadening their cultural perspectives. In addition to learning about new customs and making connections with her future colleagues, Saeger is also looking forward to trying new foods and traveling around Central America.

Katherine Webster '23 | Spain

Katherine Webster ’23 will teach English as a Second Language (ESL) this fall as a part of the Fulbright fellowship in Ourense, Spain. Originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico, Webster’s academic journey here at �԰�� was marked by her love for languages and history, with her majors in French, Spanish and history, and a minor in museum studies.

Webster’s decision to apply for a Fulbright was driven by her love to challenge herself, her passion for teaching, and her desire to improve her skills in Spanish. She found the Fulbright application process to be somewhat demanding; however, with the guidance and support from �԰��’s Fulbright advisors, Webster could successfully navigate the application process’s different components.

Webster chose Ourense, Spain, because of her previous language studies and deep love for the country, which had developed during her study abroad program in Madrid in 2023. Webster was captivated by Spain’s vibrant culture and kind people, making it the ideal destination for her Fulbright experience.

In Ourense, Webster will teach ESL to high school students. She plans on incorporating various English language activities, such as creating a book or movie club, into her teaching. Her expertise in Spanish will significantly aid her in effectively communicating and understanding the challenges her students may face in learning a new language. Webster is looking forward to exploring Galicia, the northwest region of Spain where Ourense is located, to learn more about the area’s history and culture. She also looks forward to revisiting her host family from her study abroad program in Madrid.

Meet Andreas Verrios: The Man Behind Mr. NYC Subway

�԰�� alumnus sees subway commuting through a different lens

Andreas Verrios '08 is a prolific content creator, with 39.7 million likes on TikTok and counting, who captures happiness in the most unlikely place: the subway platform.

Known as Mr. NYC Subway on social media, Verrios registered for “Introduction to Theatre” on a whim during his first year at �԰��. “I was so focused on baseball at the time, but that class made me realize I might also have some artistic talent,” he says. At the end of the semester, Professor Steve Gilliam—who for 30 years directed and designed sets for �԰�� musicals and plays, in addition to teaching and advising students—pulled Verrios aside. “He said, ‘There's something about you. You have so much energy, passion, and drive,’” Verrios recalls. “He saw something in me.” Looking back now, the conversation was a sign of who he would become. “It feels full circle,” Verrios says. “There was a spark in me back then, and someone else recognized it.”

Before arriving at �԰�� to play baseball, the San Diego native had never been to Texas, but it didn’t take long to fall in love with the culture, the people, and, of course, the food. Off the field, Verrios favored political science and business classes and studied abroad in Granada, Spain.

After graduating in 2008, he clerked for three years at a Los Angeles law firm, before pursuing his juris doctor at Western State College of Law in Irvine. In his own words, he “nearly flunked out” before “crushing it,” and graduated top of his class in 2013. Next up was New York City for a Master of Laws degree at the Cardozo School of Law, which eventually led Verrios to in-house legal positions at Goldman Sachs and then Deutsche Bank. On paper, his life was perfect. “I had a great apartment in Brooklyn overlooking the Statue of Liberty, I was in an amazing relationship, and I had my membership at Equinox,” he says with a laugh. “But I was like, 'This isn't why I came to New York.'”

Since moving to New York City, Andreas Verrios '08 has become well known for his video and photography work on his Mr. NYC Subway social media accounts.

One morning, during a mundane subway commute, he noticed everyone staring at him. They were curious about the large pillow under his arm, which he was bringing into the office for lumbar support. “I realized how easily I could take everyone out of their normal commuting funk,” Verrios says. In the office, he texted a musician friend. “I said, ‘I have this vision, I want you to perform on the train car and tell people you don't want their money, that you just want them to take that positive energy and pass it on.’” The reaction from passengers was mixed, according to Verrios, who filmed the whole thing. “Some people clapped, others cried happy tears, and some New Yorkers never even looked at us,” Verrios says. “You don't need to bring positive energy to the subway; it's already there. You just need to look for it.”

He finally found what he had come to New York City for, and for the first time in his life, Verrios saw what Professor Gilliam had recognized in him all those years ago. Inspired by the untapped joy that can come from a morning train ride, he bought a professional camera and began taking photos of subway commuters. “I was looking for my purpose and my passion, and it came from a place that I used to say I hate,” he says. “But if you just pause and look a little deeper past the surface, you're going to find something.”

Verrios uses his camera to capture positive energy and bring joy to the usually mundane subway platforms of New York City.

Since launching Mr. NYC Subway in 2017, he has made countless viral videos in subway stations with celebrities like Ed Sheeran, Matchbox 20, and James Blunt. His “stranger series,” where he asks people on the street to model for major brands, has racked up hundreds of millions of views. It’s a creative line of work, built on a foundation of connection and determination, traits which he formed playing baseball and performing on stage at �԰��. “You can't always predict your future or see your full potential, especially that young,” he says, “but in many ways, the writing was on the wall.”

As Tiger Network enters its second decade, hear from its latest graduate in the pros

A mask sat between me and my headset. My legs trembled under the table. Somehow, I managed to say out loud that the �԰�� Tigers were hosting the Austin College Kangaroos.

Nerves were at an all-time high as I made my play-by-play broadcasting debut for Tiger Network in April 2021. However, I quickly realized after one inning that I had been doing this–talking about baseball–my entire life. The only difference? Now, people were listening. What I didn’t realize was how much my life had just changed.

I went on to broadcast more than 150 games across baseball, basketball, football, and volleyball at �԰��, and along the way, I discovered a new passion. I fell in love with being on air and having a new way to tell stories just as I had enjoyed doing as a writer for many years prior.

Fast-forward to the present day, and I am the broadcast engineer for the San Antonio Missions, the Double-A affiliate of the San Diego Padres. I produce every game and travel with the team, jumping on air for both play-by-play and color commentary. As I sit in broadcasting booths across the Texas League, from Wichita, Kansas, to Corpus Christi, Texas, I still feel like I’m in the Tiger Network control room in Calgaard Gym.

Learning in Real-Time

Each step I took at �԰�� built upon the last. I spent two years as the sports editor for the Trinitonian after working as a kid reporter for Sports Illustrated Kids in high school. As I finished high school and entered college, I began to have an inkling that I wanted a different side of journalism.

At the same time that I was with the Trinitonian, I started doing video interviews with Tiger Network to venture out in front of the camera. Josh Moczygemba ’05, executive producer of Tiger Network, gave me opportunities to interview athletes and coaches during my first month on campus, allowing me to get immediate practice.

After fall sports were postponed in 2020 due to COVID-19, all 18 intercollegiate teams at �԰�� were scheduled to compete in the spring. That meant all hands on deck at Tiger Network to cover nonstop action. Understanding my desire to try new things and my love for baseball while also needing help with a packed schedule, Moczygemba asked me to jump on air for my first Tiger Baseball game.

Despite my familiarity with other realms of sports journalism, broadcasting was still ultimately new to me. Thankfully, �԰�� encourages experiential learning, and Tiger Network was at the heart of that for me and so many other �԰�� students.

It’s not that Tiger Network is allowing students to wing it. Instead, Tiger Network encourages exploration while still requiring preparation. Have you ever operated a camera? How about you shadow another student during a game and try it yourself? Don’t know what live production looks like? Sit in the control room for a few games to pick up roles like replay and graphics.

And for someone like me, having never broadcast a game? Watch someone like Ryan Figert ’22 do it. Be alongside him while he does play-by-play before feeling comfortable enough to do it yourself.

Track Record of Success

From having detailed notes ready for air to scheduling conversations with coaches ahead of games, Figert helped show me what was possible as a student broadcaster. Now, Figert is the social media coordinator for FC Dallas of Major League Soccer, where he has also taken over play-by-play for several games on the radio for the highest level of professional soccer in the United States.

Just like I had Figert in front of me, he had others in front of him. Callum Squires ’16, one of Tiger Network’s first talents, just landed a new role as an account executive for SRK Strategies, a public relations firm with various sports media and broadcasting clients. Before that, Squires served as the assistant director of Communications and Broadcasting for the Southland Conference, and he has earned several professional broadcasting roles for the Dallas Cup and ESPN+ college soccer.

And then there’s Chris Garagiola ’15, who helped Moczygemba get Tiger Network off the ground in 2015. Garagiola is now the radio play-by-play broadcaster for Major League Baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks. Last October, Garagiola got to call the Diamondbacks’ trip to the World Series.

Having multiple alumni working at the professional level in broadcasting while barely a decade old showcases Moczygemba and Tiger Network’s impact. As Tiger Network has grown, there is now more staff help from the likes of the remarkable Ryan Sedillo and Mason McLerran, and Taylor Stakes before them. The staff bring their expertise to students, guiding them to learn and grow in real time.

There are not only consistent opportunities for students but also access to incredible equipment. From the get-go, those involved with Tiger Network work with gear they will see in the workforce. It takes little time for a casual fan to watch a game on Tiger Network and notice the quality is elite among Division III competition while often rivaling higher-level broadcasts as well.

The Growth Continues

Without Tiger Network, I would not be where I am today. I am honored to join those before me as the latest Tiger Network broadcaster in the pros, and I know I won’t be the last. I smile every time I turn on Tiger Network to hear Reed Rosales ’25: the expert cameraman turned broadcaster, or Cole Isaacson ’27, who I still remember showing the Tiger Network control room before he decided to commit to �԰��.

And remember, there’s no action captured without cameras. Adam Mann ’24 would do anything necessary to get the best shot, including standing on the Calgaard Gym roof to film �԰�� Baseball games. He has spent the last two summers as a camera operator for the Sugar Land Space Cowboys, a Triple-A affiliate of the Houston Astros, and he’s headed to Texas A&M University for a master’s degree, where he hopes to join 12th Man Productions to continue his sports media experience.

What Moczygemba has built is nothing short of remarkable. Despite no official broadcasting curriculum, �԰�� is home to a burgeoning broadcasting pipeline because Tiger Network has proven that there’s no better way to learn than by doing. As Tiger Network enters its second decade, I’m excited to tune in for what’s next.

James King '23, M'24 has become the fifth �԰�� graduate to secure a sought-after Financial Accounting Standards Board (FASB) Postgraduate Technical Assistantship. This highly selective program admits only about seven students nationwide each term. Over the course of the one-year term, participants gain extensive experience in the accounting standards-setting process and develop a deep understanding of the roles of preparers, auditors, and users of financial information.

James’ qualifications are exceptional, largely due to his proactive approach in becoming the first among his cohort of 24 master's students to complete all four parts of the Certified Public Accountant (CPA) exam. Typically, students in Texas have to wait until after graduation to sit for the exam. After doing thorough research, James discovered that New York regulations permitted him to take the exam earlier based on his credit hours. Taking a calculated risk, he pursued licensure in New York ahead of his classmates. This decision not only set him apart from his Texas peers but also enhanced his competitiveness against nationwide peers, many of whom also would only be eligible to sit for the exam after graduation in their respective states.

James' interest in and dedication to his accounting career began long before it was time to take his CPA exam. A Dallas, Texas native, James came to �԰�� as an undergraduate with a clear goal of pursuing a career in accounting. His inspiration stemmed from his father, who had a distinguished career in public accounting and at the SEC. After his father passed away during James's teenage years, accounting became a meaningful way for him to maintain a connection with his father’s legacy.

During his undergraduate years, James was involved on campus as a residential assistant, member of the Academic Honor Council, and president of the accounting association. He also studied abroad in Germany and interned at Deloitte in Houston, all of which he believes contributed to his success in acquiring this position.

James’s extensive involvement and diverse experiences during his undergraduate years were well-supported by �԰��’s robust accounting program. �԰�� offers a five-year accounting program consisting of a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting and a Master of Science in Accounting (M.S.A.). While state laws mandate additional education beyond a traditional undergraduate degree for CPA eligibility, �԰��'s accounting major goes above and beyond in preparing students for their future careers. Starting in their junior year, students actively engage with the accounting profession through firm/student events and special topics courses, which introduce them to various opportunities within the field.

James shared that the support he received in the M.S.A. program included valuable mentorship from faculty members. Jared Koreff Ph.D., Julie Persellin, Ph.D., and Sunita White, M.B.A. were among the mentors who guided him throughout his journey at �԰�� and helped him prepare for the FASB process.

Reflecting on his journey, James said, “�԰�� provided the tools to start building my career from zero. I learned from my dad that the important thing is not how long you live, but what you accomplish with your life. The world of accounting is ever-evolving, so taking initiative was key to reaching a position where I can make an impact. Every step has prepared me to fulfill my dream of serving the public, honoring my father's legacy while making my own mark."

Computer science degrees position graduates well, Dept. of Education data shows

The job market is robust—and reliable—for �԰�� graduates who want to work in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

Graduate employment data from the U.S. Department of Education shows that a �԰�� computer science degree is one of only four degrees nationwide that is both 100% employable and can earn graduates more than $100,000 in salary—and to have these numbers hold true at both the one-year and four-year marks after graduation.

According to a study from software development company Vention, which found data on 1,790 degrees nationwide that are related to the field of AI, �԰�� is one of 23 total that produced 100% employment at both time markers (one and four years).

Of those 23, just four boast a median salary in six-figures, with �԰�� coming in third at a median average of $108,840 yearly.

At �԰��, computer science (CS) graduates have access to the resources of a big school and the rigorous curriculum of a dedicated computer science department. But they also benefit from a small-school atmosphere, enmeshed with a liberal arts environment that prioritizes hands-on opportunities (such as research and big-time internships) and an interdisciplinary approach that helps students learn, grow, and develop critical thinking skills from a variety of backgrounds, perspectives, and viewpoints.

Many current students are already shaping their futures within the world of AI through research opportunities that give them the chance to live life on the cutting edge of the field.

Cole McGuire ’25, a CS major, is currently conducting research that blends AI with biology, a second passion of his. McGuire is using AI to speed up the human understanding of genes, which in turn has potentially crucial applications for fields such as cancer research.

“I think what makes �԰�� special is the early opportunities to get one-on-one experience researching with professors. I was able to start on this project as a freshman,” McGuire says. “With �԰�� you get so many opportunities, so early at all times, that it lets you work on these long consistent projects and make something you’re really proud of by the end of your senior year.”

For students like McGuire, as well as fellow CS researcher Matvei Popov ’25, the collaborative and exploratory nature of the liberal arts enhances a CS degree.

Popov is conducting his own AI research, as part of a team studying the media coverage of AI itself.

“I'm so glad that I'm in the lab with just people of different backgrounds and experiences,” he says, “because everybody can address different problems and create some really cool ideas by working together.”

Kim Sayles ’02 speaks on her journey from �԰�� student-athlete to Secret Service Counter Sniper

Kim Sayles ’02 provides protection for some of the most important people in the world.

You see, Sayles is a member of the United States Secret Service Special Operations Division. Specifically, she is a key component of the Counter Sniper Team, which provides long-range observation and real-time information gathering at exterior sites visited by Secret Service protectees. The officers are all highly trained, precision marksmen and are known as Counter Sniper Technicians.

One of the protectees is the president of the United States. The White House is one of Sayles’ assignment locations.

“Working for the Secret Service has allowed me to visit many different places and countries around the globe,” Sayles says. “I have been fortunate enough to accompany former and current presidents to over 40 countries.”

Sayles was hired by the Secret Service in May 2003 and was assigned to the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center at Artesia, New Mexico. She then received advanced training at the Secret Service Academy in Laurel, Maryland. In 2010, Sayles earned the distinction of being the first female Counter Sniper.

“The fall of my senior year at �԰��, 9/11 happened,” Sayles explains. “As a political science major, I always wanted to do something in public service. At that time, I was leaning into a possible future in coaching, but September 11 really changed my mindset. It influenced me to apply with the Secret Service.”

Sayles was a two-sport athlete at �԰�� from 1999 to 2002 in basketball and softball. She was a point guard for Tiger women’s basketball and earned All-Southern Collegiate Athletic Conference (SCAC) Honorable Mention accolades from 2000 to 2002. Sayles was particularly known for her three-point shooting and dishing out assists to her teammates.

“Kim Sayles assisted in laying the foundation for the successful �԰�� women’s basketball teams you see today,” says her coach, Becky Geyer, who guided the 2003 squad to the NCAA Division III Championship. “Kim played with grit, determination, and a no-quit attitude. These qualities have carried over to her career. I am proud of the woman she has become.”

In softball, Sayles was elected to the All-SCAC Honorable Mention Team in 1999 as an infielder. Sayles was selected for the 2002 SCAC All-Tournament Team as a designated player, where she cracked four doubles.

With a coaching future on her mind, Sayles was encouraged by Geyer to work camps during the summer. Taking her advice, Sayles worked at a camp run by University of Connecticut women’s basketball coach Geno Auriemma, who has led the University of Connecticut to 11 NCAA Division I Championships.

Thanks to the work and mentorship Sayles garnered in working camps like UCONN, she was hired almost immediately after graduating. Sayles worked as the administrative assistant to the University of Kansas women’s basketball program, a position she held from July 2002 to May 2003. Then, she received a job offer from the Secret Service.

Sayles credits her experiences at �԰�� as being invaluable in her career.

“There are limitless lessons I’ve applied since my athletic career ended,” Sayles reflects. “One of the major lessons is that failure isn’t fatal. I think that’s hard when you are young because of all the various influences in your life. Ultimately, the reward and the education come with the struggle and perseverance to keep going, to keep trying until you are successful.”

In addition to Geyer, Sayles cited political science professor John Hermann, Ph.D., with whom she took constitutional law classes; along with former �԰�� Public Relations Director Sharon Jones Schweitzer as influential during her time at �԰��.

Sayles summarized why she believes she has been successful in her career.

“Being the ‘first’ to do anything is not without significant challenges,” Sayles says. “The phrase ‘show up every day’ used to be my advice, but I have since borrowed from former Oklahoma coach and Hall of Famer Sherri Coale: ‘continual acts of sincerity,’ over and over again. Do the right thing, doing what you say you are going to do over and over again until you build that belief in what you stand for.”

A month ago, while doing the New York Times’ Spelling Bee, I enjoyed a moment of satisfaction keying in “denouement,” good for 10 points. I screengrabbed it with the intention of sending the image to the person who introduced me to the word.

Among the many wonderful teachers I had over the years, Dr. Coleen Grissom was a legend at �԰��, serving there from 1958 to 2019. While the gravitational center of her legacy resides on campus, the breadth of her influence extends wide: branches that sprout offshoots that sprout greenery.

Her class on 20th century fiction was transformative for me. For better and perhaps worse, it is the reason I do what I do. On the first day of class, she presented a clutch of words with which she hoped we’d become familiar. I remember “verisimilitude” on the list. And I remember “denouement.”

I had, by senior year at �԰��, spent ample time with the canon, a byproduct of being an English major. I feel like we should all enroll in literature classes again at age 50 to appreciate better the works we partially understood decades earlier. But Grissom’s syllabus wasn’t concerned with the past. It was a field in bloom. I wish I could remember all the titles, but a few: Toni Morrison’s Beloved, Margaret Atwood’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Cormac McCarthy’s All the Pretty Horses, Susan Sontag’s The Volcano Lover, Peter Høeg’s Smilla’s Sense of Snow. Her class was neither a revision of the canon nor a condemnation of it. It simply asked if there might be benefits in a broader guest list, the sort of approach that could kindle a creative restlessness in her young charges.

More than advocating for a particular title, Grissom encouraged reverence for the discussion of these works. The environment she established made the works feel not like requisite reading, but they felt nevertheless like required reading simply because her manner invited buy-in from us. I struggle to name any one cultural thing I’ve felt such reverence for as each hour spent in her class.

When I returned to Texas 20 years ago, I thought I’d see more of her, but sometimes the three hours between Houston and San Antonio feels like 30. But because the San Antonio Express-News is a sibling publication to the Houston Chronicle, I’d have the occasional story run there. To hear from her about something I’d typed was a singular validation.

At some point during my four years at �԰��, there was a student art exhibition that made a collage out of Maurice Sendak’s Where the Wild Things Are and some printed pornography. I don’t know how I recall the title, but it was “Tawdry Shells and Cheese.” The curation of memories is a curious puzzle not easily solved.

Upon graduation, I gave her a copy of Sendak’s book, devoid of penises. “Tart,” she said. “And warmly appreciated.”

She referenced the book before I moved to New York, telling me, “Your supper waits for you there.”

I wish I had a better denouement here. One in which I sent off that Spelling Bee screengrab instead of just meaning to do so. So, instead, I’ll offer up a quote that Roger, a teacher friend, commented on a social media post I made about Dr. Grissom. The quote is from John Steinbeck:

“I have come to believe that a great teacher is a great artist, and that there are as few as there are any other great artists. Teaching might even be the greatest of the arts since the medium is the human mind and spirit.”

Camille Johnson’s 21st birthday did not go exactly as planned.

Sitting at her birthday lunch with her family on March 11, 2020, she received an email about �԰��’s COVID-19 response and campus shutting down. Johnson ’21 had to quickly pack up all of her belongings and finish the remainder of the spring semester of her junior year online back home in Portland, Oregon.

Johnson was the first student researcher to join �԰��’s Roots Commission in January 2020. According to Johnson, the Roots Commission had to pivot from its original plans to visit �԰��’s first campus in Tehuacana and conduct interviews in person there because of the pandemic. Instead, Johnson and her fellow researchers started looking into online records and digital resources to piece together the important players in �԰��’s history.

“I had just learned about how to do this kind of work in Dr. Lauren Turek’s public history class the semester before, so it was really cool to look into financial records, for example, to see where the money for �԰�� was coming from and put together an online exhibit about those people,” Johnson says.

Many students take their time choosing their major, but Johnson knew that she wanted to major in anthropology before she even arrived at �԰��.

“I remember I wrote about discovering my love of anthropology in my college essay,” Johnson recalls. “From a young age, I was obsessed with ancient Egypt and watched all sorts of documentaries, so I knew coming in that’s what I wanted to do. Dr. [Jennifer] Mathews was the one who made me wait a semester before declaring just to be sure.”

While Johnson was set on her major, she did change her mind on what she was going to minor in. As she was learning more about archaeology, she leaned into geosciences to complement her major. In Summer 2019, she studied abroad and did archaeological fieldwork in Belize. The more African American studies and history classes she took, however, the more she began to realize where her interests really lie.

“I still have such a passion for archaeology and the science side of it, but I knew I really wanted to end up at a museum no matter what kind of path I took. My passion for African American studies and African American history really led me down the more historical research path,” Johnson explains.

Johnson ended up triple minoring in African American studies, history, and museum studies. Following her graduation from �԰��, Johnson received her master’s degree in museum studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program.

“I won’t lie. �԰�� was hard. I did well, but it was difficult,” Johnson admits. “Grad school was honestly way less difficult because �԰�� challenged me and prepared me. �԰�� really encourages research, critical thinking, and coming to your own conclusions, so I think that helped me in grad school, which is by default much more open-ended in a lot of ways.”

Johnson received her master’s degree in museum studies from the Cooperstown Graduate Program.

Johnson has worked as the assistant curator for the National Museum of Toys and Miniatures in Kansas City, Missouri, since September 2023. The museum’s miniatures are more like fine art pieces that were designed for collection and display, while the museum’s toys were built for play. According to Johnson, the museum is not usually interested in unopened, first-edition toys. Instead of a first-edition Barbie that is still sealed in the box, for example, the museum would rather have a first-edition Barbie that was opened and played with, even if that means that Barbie is not in the best condition.

“We look for toys that have unique stories or provenance attached to them,” Johnson says. “I love to tell stories, so getting to present these narratives to the public has been very fun.”

In her role at the museum, Johnson has been able to channel her passion for African American studies and history.

“We’re getting ready for an exhibition that’s opening in the summer about Black dolls, which I’m very excited about,” Johnson says. “Essentially, my role here is to help push our diversity initiatives forward. I’m helping rewrite some labels for our permanent exhibitions to reflect that, and I’m having an amazing time doing all of this and having my hands in a lot of different areas of the museum.”

Johnson has been encouraged to see more museums embrace difficult histories and take a less neutral approach to important, controversial issues as they invite visitors to take on a more active role in their museum-going experience.

“The stereotype about museums is we’re up in our ivory towers just imparting information upon the masses as these superior keepers of knowledge, but increasingly museums really want people to come and formulate their own knowledge through facts that we present and questions we raise,” Johnson says.

Johnson returned to campus this spring for the first time since graduating to attend “Rooting �԰��’s History: Past, Present & Future,” a series of panels and discussions marking the achievements of the Roots Commission.

“At first, it felt weird talking with my professors as more of a peer rather than a student, but it was nice,” Johnson says. “It was really cool to see that the work has been continuing and learn that they've been able to find more information and make more connections, and it was touching to hear how engaging in this careful work of historical inquiry is honoring Dr. Carey Latimore’s legacy.”

Johnson remembers how she spent so many hours talking with Latimore in his office before class, and she believes personal connections like that are what make the �԰�� experience so special and meaningful.

“All of the professors I had were impactful in some way. I feel like without any of them, I probably wouldn’t be doing exactly what I am now,” Johnson reflects. “The advice I give everyone is find a professor that you really enjoy and latch onto them because that kind of guidance is unparalleled.”

On Saturday, March 16, and Thursday, March 21, �԰�� hosted a delegation of 10 basketball players and coaches from Zambia. �԰�� business professors Jacob Tingle ’95, Ed.D., and Brandon Crooms, Ph.D.; education professor Angela Breidenstein ’91, M’92, Ed.D.; alumna Emily Ellis ’22; and graduate students Yvette Peña ’18, M’19, M’24; Haley Thames ’22, M’24; and Maeve Armand ’23, M’24 discussed leadership and backward program design with their Zambian guests.

“It was incredible to both teach and learn from this group of educators and coaches,” Peña says. “It was an example of how great ideas can come about when you work collaboratively across contexts. It was an incredible opportunity to see how education and educational tools can influence leadership and growth across all aspects of life.”

This session was part of the larger Leadership Development through Sports: Program for Zambia, sponsored by the U.S. Department of State’s Office of Citizen Exchanges through the Sports Diplomacy division. With the help of The Basketball Embassy, the Zambian players and coaches journeyed to San Antonio for a 10-day program centered on developing leadership through sports and the importance of prioritizing mental health for players and coaches.

During Saturday’s session, Crooms delved into the essence of purpose-driven leadership in sports, emphasizing the transformative power of personal stories.

“I was truly inspired by hearing the personal narratives and stories of each coach and how certain pivotal moments in their life influenced them to be multifaceted individuals that use sport to impact their community,” Crooms says.

Visiting assistant professor of business administration Brandon Croom, Ph.D., shared his journey and the impact of mentorship through his student-athlete development program with the Zambian delegation.

During Thursday’s session, the �԰�� professors and students tackled challenging but rewarding questions about how sports impact young athletes. “It was a privilege to hear the basketball coaches talk about and wrestle with questions like: How can sports be used to encourage and empower youth? What methods can be used to teach youth participating in sports programs life skills beyond simply playing sports? And how can engaging with sport develop leadership skills in youth that can be used beyond the courts?” Tingle says.

Education professor Angela Breidenstein ’91, M’92 spoke to the Zambian delegation about backward program design.

While the delegation engaged in meaningful discussions, they also learned about a new approach to teaching. “The ‘backward design’ model we shared with them encourages the development of essential questions and understandings and helps them to plan their projects with the end goal in mind,” Breidenstein says.

This Zambian delegation directly follows Tingle and Breidenstein’s Spring Break trip with �԰�� volleyball players to North Macedonia and the exchange of Macedonian volleyball coaches to �԰�� in Summer 2023 through the Leadership through Sport Program. Additionally, in Spring 2023, Tingle, Breidenstein, and �԰�� student-athletes traveled to Uzbekistan for a basketball sports diplomacy trip through the Youth Leadership through Sports Program. In November 2022, the pair of professors and Master of Arts in Teaching and sport management students led sessions for a delegation of high school girls from Serbia and Croatia. In October 2022, they hosted an exchange of Uzbek high school basketball players at �԰��.

“This is the power of sports diplomacy on full display,” Tingle says. “Living in San Antonio and working at �԰�� means there are so many opportunities to participate in cultural exchanges and international learning sessions.”

In mid-April, an American delegation, including Crooms and �԰�� students, will travel to Zambia to continue to assess and design action plans for their initiatives and build meaningful intercultural connections.

TUAAB president finds joy in giving back to �԰�� by volunteering her time and efforts in her role

Nadia Islam ’12 is the current president of the 37-member �԰�� Alumni Association Board.

Starting her role as president last year, Islam will hold office until December 2024. Her multifaceted role includes representing the �԰�� alumni constituency, setting agendas for board meetings and activities, presiding over business meetings, and acting as a liaison with the �԰�� Board of Trustees. She communicates updates about alumni activities to the trustees while also conveying trustee news to the Alumni Association Board.

“I am privileged to represent such a talented group of alumni,” Islam says. "The University and its graduates have significantly shaped my life, and I find great joy in giving back by volunteering my time and efforts in this role."

�԰�� brought Islam to San Antonio, but her roots in the city have grown deeper since.

She currently works for the City of San Antonio as the government affairs administrator. In this capacity, Islam advocates for the city’s many needs at the state and federal levels. Her department focuses on analyzing legislation and utilizing available funding opportunities.

"I find my job very exciting," Islam shares. "Every day brings new challenges and opportunities. I get to learn about what our community needs are. We constantly look out for legislation that could benefit or harm us."

Islam is well-equipped for her current role in city government, with a diverse range of experiences and her education from �԰��.

She earned a bachelor's degree in political science from �԰�� in 2012, with a focus on international and comparative studies. Her extracurricular activities included involvement in the Muslim Student Association and the Chi Beta Epsilon sorority. Islam furthered her education by obtaining a master's degree in public administration from the University of Texas at San Antonio in 2017.

Islam started her career in government relations as an outreach coordinator for a U.S. Representative. She also served as the government and public relations manager at the San Antonio Housing Authority before undertaking her current role.

"My �԰�� experience provided me with an interdisciplinary education," Islam reflects. "It taught me to think on my feet and navigate challenges effectively. This is something that gives me a leg up every day."

�԰�� has played a major role in Islam’s personal life as well. She is married to a �԰�� alumnus, Mahlon Long '07. He is a CPA and currently works for Valero Energy in accounting and software development. Living in San Antonio has allowed Islam to develop very close friendships with other �԰�� alumni who have remained a very close supporting network over the past decade.

For today’s �԰�� students, who will automatically become members of the Alumni Association upon graduation, Islam offers advice.

"I encourage students to explore different opportunities during their college years," Islam advises. "Engage in different activities in both leading and following roles. Take some risks while you still have a safety net at �԰��. Don’t forget to take care of yourself!”
