Each year, the event brings together ԰’s Health Care Administration distinguished alumni, current students and faculty to celebrate career achievement. I am always energized by the gathering and have long admired the contrast between lifetime achievement and those beginning their career. For a couple of reasons, this year’s event accentuated the endings and beginnings.</p> <p>While Jake is certainly not at the end of his career yet, his speech highlighted many tremendous achievements over a long career in health care administration. In addition, we were delighted and saddened as we recognized Michael Fischer’s last event representing ԰ as the Vice President for Student Affairs. His support for the University and the Health Care Administration program will certainly live on as he resumes his career as an English professor at ԰.</p> <p>We were also able to celebrate a number of our board members, Kevin Ormand ’98, Brett McClung ’92 and John Hyde ’81 as they ended their years of unwavering service on the board. In contrast, we were excited to announce the appointment of three new board members, Alison Joseph Haralson ’99, Matt Chance ’98 and Robert Martin ’03, who will bring fresh perspective to the board. The tradition of giving back to ԰’s Health Care Administration program through board representation and guidance will be in great hands for many years to come.</p> <p>Finally, I was extremely pleased to see all of the current students who were able to attend ACHE and the Duce Award dinner. The faculty and University should be extremely proud of the recent accomplishments. From being ranked as one of the top programs in the nation to winning national case competitions, the faculty and the students continue to improve upon a tremendous legacy. We should all be excited about new beginnings…</p> <p>James (Jim) C. many things medical. These things came together to cause me to choose a career in health care,” says Jake Henry Jr. ‘74 FACHE, President and CEO of Tulsa-based Saint Francis Health System and recipient of the 2015 Leonard A. Duce Award.   </p> <p>“Things medical” began with his high school job as an orderly at the 80-bed community hospital in his hometown of Sweetwater, Texas. After becoming an Army medic and serving in Vietnam and the U.S., he worked in a hospital business office while attending Texas Tech.</p> <p>He chose ԰ for his master’s in health care administration based on a friend’s high praise for the faculty, the curricula and the fact that it was the only accredited health care administration program in Texas. He also noticed that many of its graduates were in leadership positions around the state. “This certainly gave the program a positive imprimatur,” he adds.</p> <p>Jake’s potential as a leader was recognized quickly. Two years after embarking on his career in heath care—at age 30— he was named President and CEO of Angelo Community Hospital in San Angelo, Texas.  Similar positions with health care systems across Texas and in California and Memphis followed. He took the helm of Saint Francis in 2002, which celebrated the opening of a 162-bed Children’s Hospital and has experienced an eye-popping 341 percent increase in net worth during his tenure. Gross revenue and market share have also increased significantly under his leadership and the system is rated AA+ by Standard & Poor’s and Aa2 by Moody’s.</p> <p>Professionally, Jake is a member of the American Hospital Association’s House of Delegates and is a Fellow of the American College of Healthcare Executives. Over the course of his career, Jake has held board of director positions or chaired more than 35 health care or civic organizations. Currently, he serves on the board of directors of the Children’s Hospital Foundation, CommunityCare Healthcare Plans of Oklahoma, Montreau Inc., (a continuing care retirement center), and Saint Francis Health System, and chairs the board of Xavier Insurance Company. His leadership skills and business acumen are frequently sought by organizations outside health care and he holds board memberships at American Bank and Trust and the Tulsa Regional Chamber of Commerce.  </p> <p>Such unstinting service deserves recognition and Jake is no exception. The latest in a string of honors that began with two U.S. Army Commendation Medals for valor, the Duce Award, named for Leonard Duce, first dean of ԰’s Health Care Administration graduate program, honors an alumnus/a who has made significant contributions to the field of health care administration. Dennis Millirons, a ԰ HCAD graduate from 1976 and recipient of the 2006 Duce Award, nominated Jake and presented the award to him during the annual gathering in Chicago on March 15. More than 85 fellow HCAD alumni, faculty members, university administrators and students attended the celebratory reception and dinner at Gibson’s Bar & Steakhouse to honor Jake’s latest achievement.</p> <p>To young practitioners entering the field, Jake advises: “Build an excellent toolkit of competencies. Use good judgment. Be loyal to your team and your colleagues, but don’t tolerate mediocrity—it brings everyone and everything down.”</p> <p>Having compiled a stellar record of professional performance and outstanding civic service, Jake says, “I am fortunate that after 40 years of leadership, my vocation is my avocation. I enjoy going to work every morning.”</p> <p>Congratulations, Jake!</p></div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" class="block block-layout-builder throughout his career for his extraordinary contributions to the field of health care administration. His most recent achievement took place in late January during the THA 2016 Annual Conference and Expo in Dallas. Jon was named the recipient of the 2015 Earl M. Collier Award for Distinguished Health Care Administration, the Texas Hospital Association’s highest honor.</p> <p>As President of the HCA American Group, one of two operating groups for Nashville, Tennessee-based Hospital Corporation of America, the largest hospital system in the world, Jon has oversight of 80 hospitals across ten states. Under his leadership, his hospitals have annual net revenues in excess of $19 billion and employ more than 80,000 professionals.</p> <p>Jon began his career with the Methodist Health System, now Houston Methodist. He later was recruited to Baptist Health System of East Tennessee where he was promoted three times in nine years. He returned to Texas as President and CEO of St. David’s HealthCare in Austin in 2001, becoming one of the youngest multihospital system CEOs in the country at the age of 39. During his ten years at the helm of St. David’s HealthCare, the system grew exponentially in size, investing approximately $800 million system-wide in facilities, modernization and expansion, and was recognized with numerous national and state-level honors. He was named President of the HCA American Group in 2011.</p> <p>Jon is a strong believer in serving his profession and his community. He served as Chairman of the THA Board of Trustees in 2007 and has served as a member of the American Hospital Association’s Regional Policy Board and AHA’s Health Care Systems Governing Council. Jon’s efforts to help shape public health policy at the national level ultimately led to an opportunity for him to testify before the U.S. House of Representatives Ways and Means Subcommittee on Health. In addition, he has given his time and expertise to numerous civic and social organizations, including the Greater Austin Economic Development Corporation and the Greater Austin Chamber of Commerce.</p> <p>Congratulations to Jon for this remarkable achievement!</p></div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-categories"> <div class="field field--name-field-categories field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="tag-wrapper field__item"> <div class="taxonomy-term vocabulary-category d-inline-block mx-2"> <a href="/academics/departments/health-care-administration/health-connections/archives/may-2016" class="badge rounded-0 text-uppercase text-white" style="background-color: #094d60;"> <div class="text-wrap field field--name-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">May 2016</div> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="mt-5 typography-base block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-author" data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_author"> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"><div class="border border-light rounded-sm p-3"> <div class="d-flex align-items-center mb-3"> <i class="far fa-user mr-3"></i> <a href="/news/author/aviso-contributors" class="h5 text-dark m-0"> <div class="field field--name-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">AVISO Contributors</div> </a> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-bio field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>AVISO is written and produced by members of the Health Care Administration Alumni Association in partnership with the Office of Alumni Relations. </p> <p><a class="btn btn-primary btn-sm" href="/academics/departments/health-care-administration/aviso">AVISO Newsletter</a></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div> <div class="container"> <div class="row bs-1col"> <div class="bs-region bs-region--main"> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="pt-3 my-5"> <div class="container"> <div class="row bs-1col"> <div class="col bs-region bs-region--main"> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout layout--onecol"> <div> </div> </div> Sun, 15 May 2016 17:45:29 +0000 dclark2 20416 at John Heer Jr. M'85, FACHE Receives Leadership Award /academics/departments/health-care-administration/health-connections/may-2016/john-heer-award <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">John Heer Jr. M'85, FACHE Receives Leadership Award</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>dclark2</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2016-05-14T14:52:24-05:00" class="datetime">Saturday, May 14, 2016</time></span> <div class="mt-n5"> <div class="container"> <div class="row justify-content-center bs-1col"> <div class="col-12 col-lg-10 bs-region bs-region--main"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_thumbnail_image" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-thumbnail-image"> <div class="field field--name-field-thumbnail-image field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/media_970x520/public/2021-03/health-connections-awards.jpg?itok=AXtOb6bz" width="970" height="546" alt="Health connections newsletter awards graphic" class="img-fluid image-style-media-970x520" /></div> </div> <div class="h1 typography-serif text-primary-darker p-0 text-break mt-5 block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestorytitle" data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:title"> <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">John Heer Jr. M'85, FACHE Receives Leadership Award</span> </div> <div class="h4 mb-4 typography-crimson text-break block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-sub-heading" data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_sub_heading"> <div class="field field--name-field-sub-heading field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">John Heer Jr. M’85, FACHE Receives the Baldrige Foundation's Harry S. Hertz (HSH)Leadership Award. The HSH Leadership Award given by the Baldrige Foundation recognizes an individual whose behaviors provide a role model for others. While no one person in an organization can be credited with the achievement of excellence, this award recognizes and sets forth role-model leader behaviors that have inspired, encouraged, challenged, and empowered others to achieve professional excellence. John joins previous award recipients in sharing how they lead their organizations and inspire people to achieve high performance. Recipients of the award personify the HSH Award Core Value Attributes and Leadership Behaviors: visionary leadership, customer-focused excellence, organizational and personal learning, valuing workforce members and partners, agility, managing for innovation, management by fact, societal responsibility, focus on results and creating value, and systems perspective. /> M.B.A., Texas Christian University, 1968<br /> M.S., Health Care Administration, ԰, 1973<br /> Retired <br /> San Antonio, TX </p> <p>“In every community I served, I began my tenure with concentrated efforts in reaching out to the medical staff both on an individual and organizational level. I began with the scheduling of one-on-one meetings with physicians in their offices to thank them for their past support of the hospital as well as to ask for input as to how the hospital might provide better quality of care and help make it easier and more enjoyable for their personal practice,” says Don Beeler ’73 LFACHE, who retired in 2010 as Regional President and CEO of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health Care. It’s a strategy that spelled success throughout his 34-year career with the Sisters of Charity of the Incarnate Word Health System(s) which in 1999 merged their hospital systems to establish CHRISTUS Health.</p> <p>Don’s first exposure to health care occurred during his training and subsequent service as a field medic with the U.S. Army Reserve. When a good friend entered the ԰ HCAD program, Don became interested in health care administration as a career and ԰ as a great place to continue his formal training for the field.</p> <p>After completing an administrative residency at Santa Rosa Hospital, Don was named Assistant Administrator in 1973. In 1981, he became the first employee of the former Incarnate Word Health Services, serving as Executive Vice President until 1988. During a four-year hiatus from health care, Don discovered that “one of my career goals still consisted of becoming a hospital CEO.” He subsequently joined St. Elizabeth Hospital in Beaumont as COO before moving to St. Michael Health System in Texarkana in 1995, where he served as President/CEO until returning to San Antonio to what had become CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System to serve as Regional President/CEO until his retirement in 2010.</p> <p>Although he says the career challenges he faced often centered around medical staff issues and relations, the greatest challenge—and also his most significant achievement —involved the financial turnaround of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa. When he returned to CHRISTUS Santa Rosa, the region was experiencing considerable turnover in senior leadership. Some people were led to believe that Santa Rosa was nearing the end of its 135 year old mission, a view Don did not share. Through hard work, initiating needed changes, and visionary leadership, Don and his team along with the support of associates, medical staff, volunteers, and sister sponsors enacted a remarkable financial turnaround. This led to the expansion of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa (CSR) through the acquisition of McKenna Hospital in New Braunfels and the building of a new hospital in Westover Hills in a part of San Antonio that had previously not been served by an acute care hospital. Over the same period, CSR received recognition by HealthGrades as being in the top 5% of U.S. hospitals for clinical excellence as well as marked improvements and outcomes in patient and associate satisfaction.</p> <p>A stand out in the industry, Don is a two-time recipient of the prestigious ACHE Senior Level Healthcare Executive Regent’s Award. He also received the Earl M. Collier Award for Distinguished Healthcare Administration, the highest award presented by the Texas Hospital Association, as well as the first STAR Award for outstanding leadership for HOSPAC, among other honors. While Don sees the health care industry becoming “much more financially focused and moving to a much more corporate model in terms of operations," he advises administrators and practitioners to “always remember, that health care is about serving others, whether they are patients, physicians, associates, peers or volunteers. And in the end, you will be judged by how well you served, not just your successes.”</p> <p>In retirement, Don enjoys his long standing commitment to Not-For-Profit organizations and currently serves on four boards as well as the advisory boards for both the ԰ HCAD program and the newly established HCA program at the University of the Incarnate Word. He also enjoys spending time with family and friends, snow skiing as often as possible, creating memories with his “very special” grandsons, ages 2 and 4, and looks forward to the day when his “wonderful wife of 47 years” will join him in retirement.</p></div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" class="block block-layout-builder Care Administration, ԰, 1988<br /> Administrator, Women & Infants Specialty Health, Parkland Health & Hospital System<br /> Dallas, Texas</p> <p>As a young Administrative Resident at Parkland Health & Hospital System, Paula Turner-Turicchi ’88, FACHE absorbed a sobering comment from her preceptor: Parkland does not hire residents and she should prepare to look for a position.  </p> <p>Taking that intel to heart, Paula performed her responsibilities with an eye focused toward “securing strong recommendations for my next position from everyone I encountered.” Not surprisingly, her hard work and hustle paid off. Toward the end of her residency, her preceptor offered Paula a position as Administrative Director of Women’s and Children’s Services.  Ten years later, as Vice President, Paula left to raise a family.  </p> <p>Despite the demands of parenthood, Paula remained active in the industry, consulting, writing grants and manuals, drafting policies and procedures, and preparing staff for Joint Commission surveys.</p> <p>In 2006, when Parkland took over operation of the UT Southwestern Medical Center family planning clinics and needed help transitioning the business operations, they knew who to call. Starting back part-time initially, Paula eventually returned full-time as VP when her successor was promoted to Chief Nursing Officer. “I enjoy working at Parkland.” She explains, “because our mission is to serve patients who do not have access to services elsewhere. We operate one of the largest maternity services in the country with more than 10,000 deliveries each year and the largest OB/Gyn residency in the country. “</p> <p>With more than 98 percent of Parkland’s patients covered by Medicaid, Paula faces the significant challenge of meeting high demand for care with limited resources.  She copes by staying abreast of the latest changes in federal, state, and local programs that cover services for women and children and working with colleagues to remove financial barriers to care and maximize funding from programs like Expanded Primary Care, Title X Family Planning, and Breast & Cervical Cancer Screening, among others.</p> <p>Despite that formidable challenge, Paula derives great satisfaction from seeing patients return to her clinics for routine care. “We have created an excellent example of a medical home,” she says, “and I am proud of the fact that 95 percent of Parkland’s obstetrics patients receive prenatal care with an average of nine visits. More prenatal care and fewer barriers to care mean better clinical outcomes for our mothers and infants.”    </p> <p>“The only way to achieve this success is through collaboration between clinical and business operations,” Paula continues, “and I am proud of the great working relationships that lead to our excellent results.”</p> <p>Paula’s latest accomplishment is the design and construction of Parkland’s new years-in-the-making hospital, which became operational last August and features a state-of-the-art neonatal ICU that offers 96 private rooms.</p> <p>Searching for new and creative ways to support her clinicians keeps Paula motivated. Most recently, she has been working on Network Access Improvements Projects that focus on outcomes-based payments rather than volume-based, fee-for-service care.</p> <p>In addition to hospital operations, Paula has always been interested in the legislative aspects of health care. She has testified in Austin during the past few sessions on issues regarding access to family planning services, programs, and funding levels and their impact on state spending and population health.  Recognizing her expertise and commitment, the Texas Commissioner of Health & Human Services honored Paula in August with appointment as Chair of the Women’s Health Advisory Committee charged with providing input on consolidating several state health programs for women.</p> <p>Reflecting on her career, Paula believes ԰ prepared her well. “The faculty offered a great mix of didactic study and exposure to experts who generously shared their real world experience,” she says. She also made life long friends and welcomes new connections. “I can always count on meeting a ԰ graduate at ACHE, THA, or other professional meetings.” Paula urges current students to listen to people at all levels of their organizations and combine metrics with observations. ”Going to the front line to see how things work is as important as watching your dashboard.”</p> <p>Outside of work, Paula enjoys traveling and spending time with husband, Tom, and their two children. On the near-term horizon are campus visits with their college-bound son and Paula’s trip to Europe this summer with her daughter and her middle school class. Paula’s concern for the vulnerable population she serves extends to canines as well. Summers find the family providing a foster home for dogs through Golden Retriever Rescue of North Texas.</p></div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-categories"> <div class="field field--name-field-categories field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="tag-wrapper field__item"> <div class="taxonomy-term vocabulary-category d-inline-block mx-2"> <a href="/academics/departments/health-care-administration/health-connections/archives/may-2016" class="badge rounded-0 text-uppercase text-white" style="background-color: #094d60;"> <div class="text-wrap field field--name-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">May 2016</div> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="mt-5 typography-base block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-author" data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_author"> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"><div class="border border-light rounded-sm p-3"> <div class="d-flex align-items-center mb-3"> <i class="far fa-user mr-3"></i> <a href="/news/author/aviso-contributors" class="h5 text-dark m-0"> <div class="field field--name-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">AVISO Contributors</div> </a> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-bio field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>AVISO is written and produced by members of the Health Care Administration Alumni Association in partnership with the Office of Alumni Relations. </p> <p><a class="btn btn-primary btn-sm" href="/academics/departments/health-care-administration/aviso">AVISO Newsletter</a></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div> <div class="container"> <div class="row bs-1col"> <div class="bs-region bs-region--main"> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="pt-3 my-5"> <div class="container"> <div class="row bs-1col"> <div class="col bs-region bs-region--main"> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout layout--onecol"> <div> </div> </div> Mon, 09 May 2016 11:20:01 +0000 dclark2 32141 at
