Generations of students have learned from the “Old Man” in far more ways than just the classroom. Students, faculty and board members have all changed over the years, but Golliher has remained that common thread of consistency and commitment to the Health Care Administration program. </p> <p>The ԰ Health Care Administration Board, faculty, alumni and administration were honored to celebrate the contributions of Paul Golliher during Alumni Weekend. A scholarship in his name was fully endowed and will continue to support future generations of health care leaders. We, as a community, cannot begin to thank him enough for all that he has done and continues to do for this program.</p> <p>Following Golliher’s example of consistency and commitment, the faculty, HCAD Alumni Association board, and Center for Health Care Leadership have launched an Annual Campaign. For many years, all three groups have worked tirelessly to engage with alumni, support students and continue to elevate the program to new heights. Our one collective challenge has been channeling this effort in a coordinated and consistent manner.</p> <p>Finally, through the hard work of past HCADAA board member like Kevin Ormand ’98 and Mary Stefl, we have designed a streamlined approach to request financial support for the program. A joint committee will oversee the allocation of funds prioritizing highly impactful initiatives. Activities such as student trips to ACHE, case competition travel and alumni educational events will continue to elevate the reputation of ԰ in the field of health care administration.</p> <p>As alumni and supporters of the Health Care Administration program we are asking you to follow the lead of Golliher and demonstrate that consistency and commitment by donating annually. Certainly, we would like to receive large donations, but we are more focused on giving on a consistent basis. Setting up recurring payments is the easiest way to accomplish this goal and demonstrate the commitment to our program. We hope you will participate and continue to support a program that has meant so much to so many in the field of health care administration.</p> <p>James (Jim) C. contributions to the ԰ HCAD program</h5> <p>Beloved ԰ professor Paul E. Golliher, who retired in 1993, was all smiles at the HCADAA reception and dinner at Stonewerks where he was recognized and informed that the Golliher Scholarship Endowment Fund, established by the HCAD Alumni Association, had been fully endowed. “Deo Gratias!” he exclaimed. “The glass is no longer half full and future awardees can now ‘drink’ from it more fully. I shall be eternally grateful.”</p> <p>Originally established in October 1988 as the Health Care Restricted Scholarship, the fund began awarding a $2,000 scholarship annually to a HCAD student. In 1990, a year before his retirement, the scholarship’s name was changed to the Paul E. Golliher Health Care Administration Scholarship Fund to honor and recognize Golliher’s instrumental role in establishing, guiding, and supporting the Association for decades. Over the years, gifts from alumni, parents, and friends brought the total in the fund to $62,345. Thanks to an infusion of nearly $38,000, raised by the Alumni Association during its 2015 celebration of the program’s fiftieth anniversary, the fund has reached its original goal of $100,000, the amount required for an endowment fund. Annual awards are now expected to be in the $6,000-$7,000 range in perpetuity. </p> <p>Known for his strong moral compass, tempered with his Irishman’s gift of gab and rollicking sense of humor, Golliher joined ԰’s HCAD faculty in 1968 and played a vital role in developing the program into one of the most rigorous and expansive in the country. Over the course of his 30 plus year tenure, he established residency placements for more than 1,300 students at the nation’s finest hospitals, nurturing them, mentoring them, and keeping up with their distinguished careers. In retirement, he retains his infectious <em>joie de vivre</em> and maintains close relationships with students, faculty, and alumni, a great many of whom hold top executive positions at some of the nation’s largest medical centers and best hospitals.</p> <p>Reflecting on his career, Golliher says meeting his wife, Judy, and arriving at ԰ are what confirmed his belief in the Luck of the Irish. He says the most rewarding part of his ԰ career was getting to know and work with his many students. “They became a second family, year after year, after year.” </p> <p>“I can think of no better way to continue to ensure Golliher’s legacy than to fully endow a scholarship in his name,” says Jim Bohnsack, B.S> '9, M.S.-HCAD '99, President of the HCAD Alumni Association. “Golliher has been an icon within the ԰ HCAD community for as long as anyone can remember. He has served as a professor, chair, mentor, historian and comedian and holds a special place in each one of our hearts and minds.”</p></div> </div> <div honored Mike Roussos '03 with its prestigious Momentum Award. Established last year, the award recognizes early careerists for outstanding achievement in health care management. Mike is Hospital Administrator of University Hospital, University Health System’s 720-bed academic medical center in San Antonio. The primary teaching hospital for the University of Texas Health Science Center, University Hospital is also the premier Level 1 adult and pediatric trauma center for Bexar County and South Texas. He assumed the leadership role in June 2016.</p> <p>Graciously accepting the award, Mike said, “This isn’t an award or celebration of my achievements as I don’t believe that’s accurate. This should be an annual celebration of the environment of learning, mentoring, camaraderie, and family that the ԰ HCAD program has afforded us all.”</p> <p>Mike was first exposed to the health care industry through a high school career program, in which he shadowed the CEO of St. David’s Medical Center in Austin. The experience impressed upon him the impact one could make as leader of a health care facility. He went on to earn a B.S. with High Honors in kinesiology at the University of Texas, Austin, and shortly thereafter, an M.S. in Health Care Administration at ԰ in 2003. After completing his residency at HCA’s Plaza Medical Center in Fort Worth, Mike was accepted into HCA’s COO development program and spent the ensuing 10 years serving in various leadership positions in HCA facilities in El Paso, Houston, and Corpus Christi, before becoming CEO at Mainland Medical Centre outside Houston in April 2014.</p> <p>In an AVISO profile last year, Mike said, “Caring for and healing patients is the number one reason to serve in our field. It should be the driving force for anyone working in health care.” Throughout his career, Mike has exhibited a strong commitment to delivering excellent quality care to the community as well as a focus on efficiency in the workplace creating a great working environment for staff and physicians. He is especially proud of the great teams he has built (“work families”) who work together to help the physicians, the staff, and the community they serve. He traces that success to growing up in a multicultural family where he learned to understand and acclimate to differences, a lesson that “has helped me in establishing trust and developing relationships in my professional career.”</p> <p>Acknowledging the role the ԰ HCAD program has played in his career, Mike concluded his remarks noting, “Without the relationships developed from the ԰ program during my life, I can honestly say that neither my professional life nor my personal life would be the same. It’s all of our jobs to ensure that the momentum of the program continues to produce the best health care executives in the country."</p></div> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-body field--type-text-with-summary field--label-hidden field__item"><p>This Fall, ԰’s Health Care Alumni Association and the Health Care Administration Department launched its first-ever campaign for ongoing and annual financial contributions to the Health Care Administration Program. We need your help in making this campaign a success.</p> <p>As you may know, the program celebrated its 50th Anniversary in grand style last October. A gala held at the San Antonio Country Club attracted over 250 participants and generated more than $180,000 in donations that will go toward scholarships and other investments to keep our program strong. This spectacular event celebrated decades of significant contributions to the health care industry.</p> <p>During the event, Chuck Spicer ‘95,FACHE, President and CEO of OU Medical System, summarized his feelings about the HCAD program. He stated that while there is loyalty owed to his undergraduate program for all the obvious reasons, he owes his career to ԰’s program in Health Care Administration. If we were to take a poll of the over 1,800 graduates from our program, it’s a safe bet that over 95% would agree whole-heartedly with Chuck’s sentiment. There is a value to our degree that is largely immeasurable but highly influential. The value is tied to brand, reputation, and the general market recognition that our program churns out exceptional leaders and has been doing so consistently for decades. The value is reinforced by incredible leadership at the department level that consistently raises the bar in student selection, curriculum development, and the ability to prepare residents to be significant contributors as early careerists. </p> <p>So why do we need an Annual Campaign for consistent and ongoing financial contributions? While the program receives core support from the University, a significant portion of the extra activities that have helped distinguish our program and promote its visibility have relied on alumni contributions and department fundraising. These extras include sending students to the ACHE annual meeting, student participation in national case competitions and related events. With the department’s capital campaign complete and alumni dues suspended, we are shifting our focus to an Annual Campaign that will enable us to both continue and build upon our great tradition of support that separates our program from all the rest.</p> <p>The Annual Campaign is tied to the ԰ fiscal year which starts June 1 and goes through the end of the following May. Our initial emphasis will be on participation, and the goal for this first year is 30% participation from our alumni. As this effort unfolds, we are as much interested in the percentage of alumni making donations as the actual dollar amount. Any level of contribution will be appreciated. Our intent is to also promote engagement so that more of our alumni can feel connected to our program, help educate the next generation of health care executives, and make tangible steps to promote the value of their academic credential for both current and future alumni.</p> <p>An outstanding group of alumni have agreed to serve on the Annual Campaign Steering Committee:</p> <div class="bs_grid"> <div class="row" data-row-lg="equal" data-row-md="equal" data-row-none="full" data-row-sm="full" data-row-xl="equal"> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Blake Allison '03</p> </div> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>COO<br /> Baylor Scott & White<br /> Dallas, Texas</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="bs_grid"> <div class="row" data-row-lg="equal" data-row-md="equal" data-row-none="full" data-row-sm="full" data-row-xl="equal"> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Jerome Brooks '06, FACHE</p> </div> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>CEO<br /> Edinburg Regional Medical Center<br /> Edinburg, Texas</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="bs_grid"> <div class="row" data-row-lg="equal" data-row-md="equal" data-row-none="full" data-row-sm="full" data-row-xl="equal"> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Jim Brown '99, FACHE</p> </div> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>CEOCEO-Ambulatory Services <br /> Memorial Hermann Health System<br /> Houston, Texas</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="bs_grid"> <div class="row" data-row-lg="equal" data-row-md="equal" data-row-none="full" data-row-sm="full" data-row-xl="equal"> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Steven Burghart '98</p> </div> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>President<br /> Cardinal Glennon Children's Hospital<br /> St. Louis, Missouri</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="bs_grid"> <div class="row" data-row-lg="equal" data-row-md="equal" data-row-none="full" data-row-sm="full" data-row-xl="equal"> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Ian Cooper '05</p> </div> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>CEO<br /> University Hospital Rehabilitation Hospital<br /> Beachwood, Ohio</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="bs_grid"> <div class="row" data-row-lg="equal" data-row-md="equal" data-row-none="full" data-row-sm="full" data-row-xl="equal"> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Christin Cross '06</p> </div> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Director of Marketing<br /> Baylor Scott & White Medical Center - Lakeway<br /> Lakeway, Texas</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="bs_grid"> <div class="row" data-row-lg="equal" data-row-md="equal" data-row-none="full" data-row-sm="full" data-row-xl="equal"> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Derrick Cuenca '08</p> </div> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>CEO<br /> CHS-Lake Grandbury Medical Center<br /> Granbury, Texas</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="bs_grid"> <div class="row" data-row-lg="equal" data-row-md="equal" data-row-none="full" data-row-sm="full" data-row-xl="equal"> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Ashley Hixon '00, FACHE</p> </div> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>San Antonio, Texas</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="bs_grid"> <div class="row" data-row-lg="equal" data-row-md="equal" data-row-none="full" data-row-sm="full" data-row-xl="equal"> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Grant Magness '14</p> </div> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Assistant Administrator<br /> Brownwood Regional Medical Center<br /> Brownwood, Texas</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="bs_grid"> <div class="row" data-row-lg="equal" data-row-md="equal" data-row-none="full" data-row-sm="full" data-row-xl="equal"> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Mike Roussos '03</p> </div> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Hospital Administrator <br /> University Hospital<br /> San Antonio, Texas</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="bs_grid"> <div class="row" data-row-lg="equal" data-row-md="equal" data-row-none="full" data-row-sm="full" data-row-xl="equal"> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Jared Shelton '10, FACHE</p> </div> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>President<br /> Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital Allen<br /> Allen, Texas</p> </div> </div> </div> <div class="bs_grid"> <div class="row" data-row-lg="equal" data-row-md="equal" data-row-none="full" data-row-sm="full" data-row-xl="equal"> <div class="col-12 col-sm-12 col-md col-lg col-xl"> <p>Corinne Smith B.S. Association</strong></h5> <p>Golf Tournament 2016<br /> Taylor Tingey ‘17</p> <p>This year’s ԰ All Alumni Golf Tournament was a major success.</p> <p>On Friday, October 7, nearly 50 golfers consisting of students, alumni, and friends had the opportunity of playing at The Quarry Golf Club. Although it was overcast most of the day, with an occasional rain storm, the teams completed their rounds and had an excellent experience. Each of our participating golfers received a complimentary gift bag, refreshments, and a boxed lunch during the registration process, prior to a 12:30 shotgun start. At the completion of the tournament, the players were treated to an awards reception where a light meal was served. During the reception, various trophies were awarded including best team score, worst team score, longest drive and closest-to-pin.</p> <p>This year’s tournament raised $2,800 with the proceeds going to help fund student attendance at the March 2017 <em>Congress on Healthcare Leadership Conference</em> in Chicago and the Paul Golliher Fellowship, which is awarded to one outstanding student each school year. The money raised provides excellent learning experiences for students as they attempt to navigate their way through the health care industry.</p> <p>In addition to the support from the golfers, this year’s event could not have been possible without the efforts and philanthropic support of our sponsors. The HCAD Alumni Association and Department of Health Care Administration would like to thank the following contributors:</p> <p>The Hospitals of Providence (Tournament Sponsor)<br /> CRAssociates (Hole Sponsor)</p> <p>We thank you for your continued support of the program and we are already looking forward to next year’s tournament. Please mark your calendars to join us next year on Friday, October 13, 2017 at The Quarry Golf Club in San Antonio, TX.</p> <p>We encourage you to consider assisting the event as a sponsor. The sponsorship opportunities include Tournament Sponsor, Lunch Sponsor, Hole Sponsor, and Challenge Holes which include longest drives and closest-to-pin contests. University, 1966<br /> M.S., Health Care Administration, ԰, 1971<br /> President/CEO OSF St, Mary Medical Center, President/CEO Western Region, Retired</p> <p>Michigan native Richard Kowlaski '71 began his 40+-year career in health care as a junior in undergraduate school working as a part-time Assistant to the Director of Domestic Services at Ypsilanti State Hospital, a state-run mental institution. After graduation, he completed a 12-month management-training program for the State mental department and became Administrative Director of a new division called The Center for Forensic Psychiatry.</p> <p>As his interest in health care grew, he decided, with the advice of his mentors, that a master’s in health care administration would broaden both his knowledge base and his career options. Choosing ԰ for its national reputation for excellence, Richard completed his residency at the University of Washington (UW) Hospital in Seattle. Subsequently, he became Assistant Director of Planning for UW and UW-managed Harborview Medical Center.</p> <p>Moving back to the Midwest, Richard consulted for the Iowa State Department of Health. Following that role he became Vice President for Professional Services and Planning at Mercy Hospital in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, a position he held for seven years. In 1979, he became President and CEO of St. Mary Medical Center in Galesburg, Illinois, a Catholic, not-for-profit institution sponsored by the OSF (The Sisters of the Order of St. Francis) Health System.</p> <p>The position was not without its challenges. Aside from the well known financial issues that make staying current with programs, services, and technology a constant challenge, Richard encountered a hospital that had been without a permanent CEO for several months—which had created a great amount of anxiety among the staff and the community—and faced stiff competition from another hospital.</p> <p>He began his 34-year tenure and the turn around for St. Mary by communicating with the staff on a quarterly basis, keeping them apprised of the various issues affecting them and the status of the institution. He also devoted considerable time to building relationships with the medical staff. “These were not the only things that needed attention,” he recalls, “but they were important in order to get the entire institution back on track financially and reaffirm our commitment to quality and patient satisfaction.”</p> <p>Among the other things that needed Richard’s attention were numerous construction projects, including the emergency department and helipad, the facility housing the Diagnostic Imaging Center and OSF Medical Group offices, and the Rehabilitation Complex that has allowed the providers at OSF St. Mary Medical Center to effectively carry out their mission. He is proud of the fact that his level of commitment and oversight paid off, establishing St. Mary as “the hospital of choice.” In 2009, his responsibilities were expanded to include CEO of the Western Region and he retired four years later.</p> <p>Despite the challenges associated with a career in health care administration, when asked if he would pursue the same path today, Richard answers with a resounding “YES, because it is a dynamic field that is important to society and offers great opportunities from both a personal and a career perspective.” He does encourage today’s students and young careerists to stay up to date with all the changes in the field and embrace them. He also stresses the importance of establishing relationships “at every level internal to your organization, your field, and your community.”</p> <p> "I have discovered that relationships I established over 30 or more years ago are still as valuable as the new ones with residents and interns in that they all can add to your success in both your business and your personal life even after retirement.”</p> <p>Although retired from health care, Richard has not retired from his long time involvement in his community. He tutors students in reading and does fund raising at Costa Catholic Academy. He also works with Knox College as a member of the parent’s advisory council and sits on the National Railroad Hall of Fame board, which is creating Engines of Freedom, a railroad-themed, interactive attraction designed to inspire appreciation of the importance of railroads in our daily lives. Intellectually and culturally curious, he takes occasional classes such as Religion and World Politics at Knox College and devotes “blocks of time” to travel. In short, Richard is enjoying a stimulating and rewarding retirement following a stimulating and rewarding career. </p></div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-categories"> <div class="field field--name-field-categories field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="tag-wrapper field__item"> <div class="taxonomy-term vocabulary-category d-inline-block mx-2"> <a href="/academics/departments/health-care-administration/health-connections/archives/december-2016" class="badge rounded-0 text-uppercase text-white" style="background-color: #094d60;"> <div class="text-wrap field field--name-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">December 2016</div> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="mt-5 typography-base block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-author" data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_author"> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"><div class="border border-light rounded-sm p-3"> <div class="d-flex align-items-center mb-3"> <i class="far fa-user mr-3"></i> <a href="/news/author/aviso-contributors" class="h5 text-dark m-0"> <div class="field field--name-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">AVISO Contributors</div> </a> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-bio field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>AVISO is written and produced by members of the Health Care Administration Alumni Association in partnership with the Office of Alumni Relations. </p> <p><a class="btn btn-primary btn-sm" href="/academics/departments/health-care-administration/aviso">AVISO Newsletter</a></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div> <div class="container"> <div class="row bs-1col"> <div class="bs-region bs-region--main"> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="pt-3 my-5"> <div class="container"> <div class="row bs-1col"> <div class="col bs-region bs-region--main"> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout layout--onecol"> <div> </div> </div> Sat, 10 Dec 2016 12:09:46 +0000 dclark2 32231 at
