The opportunity to serve as President for the next two years is an honor and one I promise not to take lightly.</p> <p>At our annual Dean Duce Award dinner, I briefly spoke about Jim Bohnsack '97, '99 and his outstanding leadership over the past two years. I must take a moment to thank him again. Jim has led our Alumni Board and Association through significant changes to our annual giving which, with your continued support, will allow the HCADAA to continue to invest in the HCAD Program and its students for many years to come. His are, without a doubt, large shoes to fill.</p> <p>That evening, we also had the great pleasure of celebrating Bruce Lawrence '82, FACHE on his significant contributions to health care as well as ԰’s HCAD Program. Bruce has not only dedicated his career to serving the communities in which he has worked but has also dedicated his time in mentoring the ԰ students for which he serves as a preceptor. His mentoring has groomed the next generation of successful health care leaders.</p> <p>Our time together in Chicago is always a fun time full of energy and excitement as we catch up with both old and new friends, meet the students and hear about what lies ahead for both ԰ and the HCAD Program. During our Board meeting, we also took some time to set goals for the next few years and are committed to giving back to you, the alumni. We are planning to have more market events and finding additional ways to drive our connectivity as alumni of this outstanding program.</p> <p>Lastly, please mark your calendars for Alumni Weekend which will be held October 12-15 where we will be celebrating the third Momentum Award recipient. Please be on the lookout for the registration for what is sure to be a fun event. And, as always, please do not hesitate to reach out to me anytime to share your thoughts, ideas, memories and feedback. Looking forward to connecting soon!</p> <p>Sincerely,<br /> Heidi Pandya '00, '05<br /> President, ԰ Health Care Administration Alumni Association <br /><a 2016 Duce Award at its annual dinner in Chicago on March 28. As President and CEO of INTEGRIS Health, Bruce oversees Oklahoma’s largest health care system with more than 8,000 employees statewide. Humbled and honored by the award, he says, “To be recognized by my peers and join the excellent former awardees is truly a highlight of my career.”</p> <p>His career, which spans 35 years, has been impressive. Immediately prior to his current role, Bruce spent nine years as COO and President of INTEGRIS’ Oklahoma City metropolitan hospitals. That was preceded by six years as COO for Baptist Health in Montgomery, Alabama and 12 years with Baptist Health System in Little Rock, Arkansas. Along the way, particularly early in his career, he credits ԰’s HCAD Program with opening doors that would have been difficult otherwise. Indeed, he cites the strength of the HCAD alumni network and residency program as significant factors in his choice of graduate programs.</p> <p>As for the health care industry, Bruce sees the transition from a wholesale model to a retail model as providing new opportunities to impact wellness and connectivity with consumers; however, he cautions, not without challenges. His most recent and perhaps biggest challenge was the implementation of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act which forced him to reconcile negatively impacted revenue with increased quality expectations. “This provided a true rallying point for INTEGRIS,” he reports, “and our team rose to the occasion and has not looked back.”   </p> <p>Active in the industry and his community, Bruce is a member of the American Hospital Association Board of Directors and serves as Chair of the Audit and Compliance Committee and Chair of the Regional Policy Board, VII. In addition, he is a member of the Board of Vizient, Inc., and Chair of the Audit and Compliance Committee.  He is Secretary of the Board of the Greater Oklahoma City Chamber and serves on the boards of Vizient Oklahoma/Arkansas, Oklahoma State Fair Park, Central Oklahoma United Way and is a past Chair of the Oklahoma Hospital Association. He is an active member of Crossings Community Church and a graduate of Leadership Oklahoma Class XX.  </p> <p>His leadership and service to the industry have been recognized with the Cleveland Rogers Distinguished Service Award from the Oklahoma Hospital Association, the George Nigh Oklahoma Appreciation Award from the Jim Thorpe Association and the Russell M. Perry Award of Excellence from the Urban League of Greater Oklahoma City. </p> <p>When his busy schedule permits, Bruce enjoys golf, fly fishing, reading and travel. He and his wife, Donna, also enjoy spending time with their four children (including daughter, Meghan Jordan ’09) and two grandchildren.   </p> <p>For HCAD students and residents starting out, Bruce foresees an “incredible career” and one that involves a lot of change. “The learning never ends,” he says, “and in my opinion that creates the atmosphere for excellence in oneself.” Speaking from the perspective of a long-term industry leader, Bruce adds, “Even with all the challenges in health care, I’m still excited to have a leadership role in the field.”</p></div> </div> <div March 2017)<br /> Texas Pharmacy Association</p> <p>On the eve of his retirement on March 31, 2017, Joe DaSilva ’78, LFACHE muses that his 40-year career “has been much better than I had hoped for.” For a man who spent his career guiding two of Texas’ major health care associations, influencing state and federal health care policy and legislation and holding leadership positions in more than 20 professional organizations and committees, that’s an understatement akin to “Houston, we’ve got a problem.”</p> <p>Born in Indiana to Brazilian parents—where his father was completing a medical residency—and into a family that included numerous physicians, Joe says health care was ingrained in him early. “Just after age five, I relinquished my dream to be a fireman and focused on wanting to become a doctor.”</p> <p>He worked in an Austin hospital from age 15 until he graduated from the University of Texas at Austin when he encountered his first career “fork in the road.”  Should he pursue medicine or hospital administration at ԰? He chose his love for hospitals.</p> <p>԰’s HCAD residency requirement presented a second significant “fork” for Joe. Facing a choice between hospital administration or management of health care associations, he chose what became “a life-changing opportunity” - a residency with the Texas Hospital Association (THA). With HCAD opening the door and his degree “validating my ability to contribute,” he met many high profile CEOs throughout the state who became lifelong friends and mentors.  “How and where else could that have happened?” he asks.  </p> <p>Joe spent nearly 30 years at THA, the last 20 as Senior Vice President in charge of all advocacy activities and public policy development for Texas hospitals that addressed a number of critical health care issues impacting the more than 450 hospitals and health care organizations and the patients they serve.   </p> <p>In 2009, Joe became CEO of the Texas Pharmacy Association (TPA), and for eight years, made a positive difference in the practice of about 30,000 pharmacists, 62,000 pharmacy technicians and 4,500 pharmacy students in the state. He also has been responsible for leading the Texas Pharmacy Foundation, the Texas Pharmacy Association Services, Inc., and the Texas Pharmacy Association Political Action Committee (PharmPAC).</p> <p>With ebullient Brazilian élan, Joe describes his approach to association management: “Without question, I am addicted to problem solving in management situations and interpersonal conflicts. I truly enjoy finding and selling solutions to challenges and have done so as a manager and a lobbyist in both the governmental and private arenas.” His optimism in life and career has been influenced by a famous Robert F. Kennedy quote: “Some people see things as they are and ask why? I see things as they could be and ask why not?” </p> <p>Over the course of his career, Joe has met with several U.S. Presidents, the Speaker of the House and most members of the Texas Congressional Delegation. He attended George H. W. Bush’s State of the Union address and the presidential inauguration of his son, George W. Bush. On various occasions, Joe has discussed and developed policy with national health care leaders and played a role in the passage and implementation of important health care legislation.</p> <p>At the state level, those activities are “magnified many times.” Since 1977, he has met and worked with every Texas governor, lieutenant governor, nearly all state-elected legislators, the leadership and staff of numerous state agencies and most Texas-based health care organizations, all of which enabled him to influence laws and regulations that benefitted patients, hospitals and pharmacists. “I am very proud of that fact, though it’s still difficult for even me to believe the many opportunities that have come my way.” </p> <p>As he phases into retirement, Joe says, “I have been blessed with a lifelong guiding faith, a strong and supportive marriage, two phenomenal and successful sons and five charming and bright grandchildren. What more could there be?”</p></div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-categories"> <div Ascension Healthcare<br /> CEO and Kansas Ministry Market Executive<br /> Via Christi Health, Inc.</p> <p>Mike Mullins ’87, FACHE began his journey in health care  somewhat by happenstance. While a junior at the University of Texas at El Paso and working part time at a private school for children with learning disabilities, a teacher there encouraged him to look into health care administration as a possible career. The following year, while working at the snack bar at the Coronado Country Club, a member happened to inquire about his post graduation plans. When he mentioned he was thinking about health care administration, she introduced him to her husband, Bill Poteet ’70, FACHE, who generously spent time telling Mike about the industry and “most importantly, told me about the ԰ HCAD program.”</p> <p>԰’s program gave him access to a “tremendous residency at Baptist Health System” in San Antonio which, in turn, spawned a world of opportunities. “The residency opens the door,” he says. “The rest is up to us to walk through it and do the work.” </p> <p>At Baptist, Mike received “invaluable support” from his preceptor, David Garret, and the administrative team. His first real supervisor was ԰ HCAD alumnus Dan Brown ’83 whose “values of hard work and concepts of physician relationships and service have stuck with me through the years.”</p> <p>Those years have included positions with Quorum which he saw through the merger with Triad Hospitals and subsequently, the final acquisition by Community Health Systems (CHS). Along the way, he was fortunate to have exceptional mentors. “I stress the importance of mentors because these professionals embody what we are supposed to do to cultivate talent,” he explains. Mike was particularly impressed with the philosophies of Bill Anderson, Mike Parsons and Denny Shelton “who had mastered the art of physician relationships.”</p> <p>As his career progressed, Mike enjoyed increasing responsibilities and assignments in larger hospitals. With CHS, he had the opportunity to enter multi-facility leadership and ended his tenure there as Regional Vice President with Quorum, supporting not-for-profit hospitals in Colorado.</p> <p>Three years ago, Mike joined Ascension in the Indiana Ministry and was later promoted to Senior Vice President and serves as Ministry Market Executive, CEO for the Kansas Ministry. While leading and supporting the clinically integrated delivery system in Kansas, Mike is responsible for strategic direction, a budget in excess of $1 billion and 8,000 employees. He also spends considerable time on political action and legislation. Like many in the industry, Mike is facing the significant challenge of how to continue serving the poor and vulnerable in an era of rapidly declining reimbursement. “It forces the hard decisions to be made faster but still with compassion,” he says. With pressure magnified compared to former eras, he says, “We deal with it by showing up and leading our teams through tough times.” </p> <p>No stranger to tough times, Mike says his proudest accomplishment has to do with “the other side of my life.” Simultaneous with his career in health care, Mike spent 32 years in the Reserves, 27 of them as a Naval Officer. “The mobilization to Kandahar, Afghanistan and the work I had to do there has no match for anything I have done in my civilian career,” he recalls. “Completing that Navy tour of duty in a NATO environment, excelling at what needs to be done (reflective of the whole team) and doing things you never dreamed you would have to do is very impactful.”</p> <p>On a happier note, Mike has been married to “a very tolerant woman” for nearly 32 years and they have two grown sons. He serves on the Newman University Board, participates in the Greater Wichita Partnership and has supported Rotary, Salvation Army and the United Way. When not working, he enjoys movies, playing basketball and, now in “my older age,” bike riding.</p> <p>Despite the pressures and challenges he encounters at work, Mike loves his job and the opportunity it affords him to set the cultures for the organization he is entrusted to lead. “This combined with the privilege of service and mentoring others is very meaningful to me.”</p></div> Hospitals<br /> CHI St. Luke’s Health, Houston</p> <p>Mike McBride ’90, FACHE originally thought he had a calling to medicine. But while an undergraduate at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, he met ԰ HCAD students during a career fair and discovered that “health care was an opportunity to combine my business acumen, leadership skills and desire to have meaningful work helping others.” He remains grateful to ԰ for the strong education he received and the “terrific network of professionals.” Indeed, his administrative residency and his first administrative role were the direct result of ԰ connections.</p> <p>After completing his residency at Methodist Hospitals of Dallas, Mike joined a small for-profit hospital company that morphed into Hallmark Healthcare which was eventually purchased by Community Health Systems. His first CEO position was with Randolph County Medical Center in Pocahontas, Arkansas. In 1995, he joined Presbyterian Healthcare System which evolved into Texas Health Resources, serving hospital systems in Kaufman, and then Paris, Texas.  An opportunity to join CHRISTUS brought him to Santa Rosa in San Antonio followed by a post at St. Mary’s Medical Center in Grand Junction, Colorado where he served as CEO and volunteered on the Colorado Hospital Association Board, ultimately as Chair. While in Colorado, he developed a love for trail running and has completed more than 25 marathon length or longer races. “I can tell stories for hours about my running,” he says with a smile, “but no one will listen.”</p> <p>Mike assumed his current position with CHI St. Luke’s Health in Houston in 2015. As part of the leadership team for CHI Texas, he oversees hospital operations in the Houston suburbs of The Woodlands, The Vintage, Sugar Land, Brazosport and Pasadena. In addition, he manages ambulatory services through the Texas Division as well as planning, design, construction, plant operations and maintenance for the division. He is also a founding member of the Texas Hospital Association’s Leadership Development Council. “Health care is a team sport,” he says, and he is justifiably proud of having built effective teams that have made measurable progress in multiple metrics in various organizations. The ACHE recognized Mike’s effectiveness with three Early Careerist Awards and the Senior Careerist Award. </p> <p>Like nearly everyone in health care today, Mike faces the challenge of consistently improving outcomes while doing so with better service and at much lower costs points. “I am convinced that the best answers come from those closest to our patients,” he says. “As leaders, it is our responsibility to create an environment where those ideas are given the opportunity to come into full light.”</p> <p>With four grown children, Mike and his wife of nearly 30 years are enjoying an urban, empty-nester lifestyle in the Montrose area of Houston. They devote free time to their grandchildren but also enjoy trekking and adventure vacations. Memorable trips include hiking Mont Blanc in Europe and the Salcantay Trail in Peru. A trek in New Zealand is in the planning stages.</p> <p>Summing up his career, Mike says, “I have now been in Catholic health care for more than 15 years with three different Catholic Systems: CHRISTUS Health, SCL Health and Catholic Health Initiatives. Catholic health care has afforded me the opportunity to combine my vocation with my faith and values. I truly believe I have been called to be part of Christ’s healing ministry.”</p></div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" class="block block-layout-builder Analytics  <br /> Sg2 Health Care and Hospital System Consultancy</p> <p>Not many women from small Ohio farms train in classical ballet and end up advising health care systems on strategic planning and the employment of analytics to inform strategy. But that is the story of Traci Dodderer Bentley ’00, ’02, FACHE.</p> <p>It was a serious injury and the ensuing months of physical therapy, imaging studies, medications and orthopedic surgeon visits that quashed her dreams for a career in dance but also introduced her to the complexity of the health care system. Shortly thereafter, while a family member was undergoing cancer treatment, she began noticing lots of opportunities for improved communication, navigation and “frankly, for being seen as a person, not a tumor type.”     </p> <p>In search of a new direction for her career, Traci interned for a month with her local fire and EMS department. “I found it such a privilege to be part of a team providing lifesaving medical intervention as well as a source of comfort to individuals and families during a time of crisis,” she recalls. “It was also a lot of fun.”</p> <p>Motivated by her earlier observations on opportunities for improvement in the health care system and having experienced the satisfaction of helping families in crisis, Traci found her way into the industry. She completed a residency with INTEGRIS Health under ԰ alumnus Stan Hupfeld ’72, FACHE and spent nearly nine years there in a variety of positions both in operations, strategy and business development. At one point, Traci was part of a team that opened a rural hospital. “We built the quality department from scratch and within about four years became one of the top performing hospitals in the system in terms of clinical quality.” Although it occurred early in her career, she considers it one of her proudest accomplishments.</p> <p>Having discovered a passion for strategy, Traci left INTEGRIS to lead strategic planning at Capital Health, an inner city hospital system in New Jersey. From there, she moved to AMC to rebuild business development functions at Temple Health in Philadelphia.</p> <p>When an opportunity arose at Sg2 Health Care and Hospital System Consultancy (a firm she had worked with as a client) that married her skills in data and analytics and passion for working with executives, strategy leaders and boards to craft and implement strategy, she joined the company as Director of Client Relations and Analytics. Her role is a bit unique in that she sits on both client relations and strategic analytic teams. Although she brings clients Sg2’s thought leadership and wealth of resources, she also works with select members, specifically around the use of analytics tools, interpretation of data and how best to integrate a variety of inputs into something meaningful that will facilitate well informed decisions. “Ultimately, I hope I challenge their thinking and help them find innovative solutions to our industry’s toughest challenges.” </p> <p>In addition to her Fellowship in ACHE, Traci is a member of the Society for Healthcare Strategy & Market Development. With two toddlers under 2 1/2, Traci’s free time is limited. Still, she has mentored a number of early careerists or people making the transition from clinical to management positions and is incredibly proud of the work they are doing and the trajectory of their careers.</p> <p>Of her own career, Traci says, “At the end of the day —especially the challenging ones—I ask myself  ‘Have I done something today that will ultimately help my clients provide better care for their communities?’”</p></div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-categories"> <div class="field field--name-field-categories field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="tag-wrapper field__item"> <div class="taxonomy-term vocabulary-category d-inline-block mx-2"> <a href="/academics/departments/health-care-administration/health-connections/archives/june-2017" class="badge rounded-0 text-uppercase text-white" style="background-color: #094d60;"> <div class="text-wrap field field--name-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">June 2017</div> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="mt-4 block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-editor-notes" data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_editor_notes"> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-editor-notes field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"> <p><em>Words by Mary Denny</em></p></div> </div> <div class="mt-5 typography-base block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-author" data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_author"> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"><div class="border border-light rounded-sm p-3"> <div class="d-flex align-items-center mb-3"> <i class="far fa-user mr-3"></i> <a href="/news/author/aviso-contributors" class="h5 text-dark m-0"> <div class="field field--name-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">AVISO Contributors</div> </a> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-bio field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>AVISO is written and produced by members of the Health Care Administration Alumni Association in partnership with the Office of Alumni Relations. </p> <p><a class="btn btn-primary btn-sm" href="/academics/departments/health-care-administration/aviso">AVISO Newsletter</a></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div> <div class="container"> <div class="row bs-1col"> <div class="bs-region bs-region--main"> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="pt-3 my-5"> <div class="container"> <div class="row bs-1col"> <div class="col bs-region bs-region--main"> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout layout--onecol"> <div> </div> </div> Sun, 04 Jun 2017 15:10:45 +0000 dclark2 32321 at HCAD Chair Report - June 2017 /academics/departments/health-care-administration/health-connections/june-2017/chair-report <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">HCAD Chair Report - June 2017</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>dclark2</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2017-06-03T10:12:56-05:00" class="datetime">Saturday, June 3, 2017</time></span> <div class="mt-n5"> <div class="container"> <div class="row justify-content-center bs-1col"> <div class="col-12 col-lg-10 bs-region bs-region--main"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_thumbnail_image" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-thumbnail-image"> <div class="field field--name-field-thumbnail-image field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/media_970x520/public/2021-03/health-connections-report.jpg?itok=-6MCrgQD" width="970" height="546" alt="Health connections newsletter report graphic" class="img-fluid image-style-media-970x520" /></div> </div> <div class="h1 typography-serif text-primary-darker p-0 text-break mt-5 block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestorytitle" data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:title"> <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">HCAD Chair Report - June 2017</span> </div> <div class="h4 mb-4 typography-crimson text-break block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-sub-heading" data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_sub_heading"> <div class="field field--name-field-sub-heading field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Edward J. Shortly before the semester concluded, the On Campus class furiously completed their final projects. They presented their business plans to the combined Finance/Strategy class. The following week they made their TigerTank pitch at Geekdom in downtown San Antonio. The most important Spring event (at least in our students’ minds) was the Preceptors’ Conference. This year, we had a large number of organizations offering our students an incredible array of residency opportunities. Of course, the class was nervous but also very excited and thankful they are afforded such great opportunities to apply concepts they are learning in the classroom to real life settings. The faculty was eager to be a part of this and to see where the students land.</p> <p>This was a very dynamic semester at ԰. We continued our recent successes in case studies. This year, we decided once again to send a group of First Year students to the UAB Case Competition in February. This is a competition typically attended by Second Year students who are about to graduate from their programs.  Given our Second Year students are in their residencies in February, it has not been the ideal time for them to compete. Although our First Year students would be potentially at a disadvantage, we thought they would still learn a great deal in the process. As it turned out, they were not at a disadvantage. Of about 40 teams in the competition, our team advanced to the semi-finals (top 12) this year. Not too shabby for a team of students who are only in their second semester of study!</p> <p>We also competed in the Cleveland Clinic’s Case Competition again this year. This competition is set up so that any team from an MHA/MBA program can register.  The Cleveland Clinic sends out the case via email on a Thursday afternoon, teams work on the case over the weekend and send their proposal on Monday morning. The judges then select the top 16 teams and invite them to Cleveland to present to their leadership. Out of more than 50 submissions, one of our teams was invited to Cleveland. Thanks to a generous contribution from an alumnus, the students were able to be fully funded to attend. Last year, we had three times invited but none of them advanced to the second round. Although only one team was invited this year, they made it not only to the semi-finals (top 8) but also to the finals (top 4) and ended up placing 2nd overall. We are extremely proud of this team. This was an experience they will never forget. They were able to present and defend their strategic recommendations to the top leaders of the Cleveland Clinic.</p> <p>Our Executive students completed their semester strong. Our Second Year students are scheduled to visit San Antonio in May for their final session where they will compete in an internal case competition. Amer Kaissi and Ms. Sharon Hubenak have been working diligently to market the program and let people know what a great opportunity our Executive Program affords someone looking to advance in health care leadership. Did you know that more than 70% of our Executive students receive a promotion within two years of their graduation – most of them by the time they graduate? If you know of someone in your organization who has leadership potential and is looking for a graduate program, please send them our way.</p> <p>Part of what makes teaching in this program so rewarding is the culture that we have been able to create. We are a very collaborative faculty who are student focused. Everything we do is focused on making our students the best leaders possible. This is unusual for an academic department where often the faculty operate in silos not unlike many physicians. What keeps us centered is our connection to you - our alumni. The faculty has the great privilege of seeing the direct impact of what we teach on campus by interacting with you through your careers. By observing the difference you make in your organizations and in the communities you serve, we are inspired to make sure we keep our focus on our students. So thank you for all that you do and please keep us updated as to what you are doing.</p> <p><br /> Edward J.
