I hope all of you have been able to take some time to slow down and enjoy friends and family as we head into the end of the year. 聽</p> <p dir="ltr">As I look back at 2017, I am so energized by the activities of our HCAD Program and our alumni. Alumni Weekend was another great success. We kicked off Alumni Weekend with our annual Momentum Award celebration where we honored Malisha Patel 鈥04, FACHE for her accomplishments in health care. Malisha has not shied away from the challenges and opportunities she has been faced with in her career. Listening to her successes and the gratitude she has for those who have supported her was an inspiring note on which to end the evening.</p> <p dir="ltr">This year, our Momentum Award evening was graciously hosted by our outgoing Board Member, Ashley Hixon 鈥00, FACHE. I want to thank Ashley not only for her generosity in hosting the evening but for her many years of dedication to our Alumni Board and the HCAD Program. Ashley served on our HCAD Alumni Association Board from 2005, as President of the Board in 2013-2015 and led the planning for our 50th Anniversary Gala. Though her time on the Board has come to an end, she continues to support the HCAD Program through her participation in the Annual Giving Committee. Many thanks to Ashley for her dedication to the Board and HCAD Program!</p> <p dir="ltr">Over Alumni Weekend, our Board meeting kicked off with a thought provoking roundtable discussion on leadership with Jody Rogers. His messages carried through to our Board meeting as we spent a significant amount of time discussing how we can best lead the Board to grow our alumni connectivity and engagement. I am excited by the Board discussion as we made the commitment to increase the connectivity events as we start 2018. Event planning for early 2018 networking activities in Austin, Oklahoma City and Houston are already well underway and we are in the process of identifying additional event locations that coincide with visits from our HCAD Professors. 聽</p> <p dir="ltr">As you鈥檝e seen in my other messages, our goal is to build HCAD alumni chapters across the U.S. and improve our communications to keep us connected. A change you鈥檒l see as we move into 2018 is that our Dean Duce Award event has moved from March to October as we work to develop our Alumni Weekend events. We will still have a networking event in Chicago during ACHE so look for that communication in early 2018.</p> <p dir="ltr">All of these events are supported by the generosity of our Alumni. The success of our inaugural Annual Giving campaign led by Mary Stefl and Kevin Ormand 鈥98, along with the support of many of our alumni on the Committee, will allow for the students to continue to attend events such as ACHE, Case competitions and local networking events for increasing alumni events we are planning. Thank you to all who made their 2017 donation and are already planning for their 2018 annual giving.聽聽</p> <p dir="ltr">I wish you a very happy and safe holiday season. As always, don鈥檛 hesitate to reach out if there is anything you鈥檇 like to discuss.</p> <p dir="ltr">Warm regards,</p> <p dir="ltr">Heidi Pandya 鈥00, 鈥05<br /> President, HCAD Alumni Association dir="ltr">The 性爱天堂 HCAD Alumni Association (HCADAA) honored Malisha Patel 鈥04, FACHE with its 2017 Momentum Award. The HCADAA presented the award at a dinner on October 12 at the lovely Monte Vista home of HCADAA Board member Ashley Hixon 鈥00, FACHE. 鈥淚 am humbled by this recognition but know it is not mine alone鈥 says Malisha. 鈥淚 will accept the award on behalf of my amazing family, friends, mentors and the team I get to work with daily who commit selflessly to wanting to do the best for our patients and community.鈥 Malisha also gives significant credit to the 鈥渦nbelievable鈥 alumni network. 鈥淓very significant change in my professional journey has been with the help of a 性爱天堂 graduate who has opened a door for me鈥 she says gratefully. While in San Antonio to receive the award, Malisha also visited the 性爱天堂 campus and shared her experiences and perspective on health care with current HCAD students. Among other lessons learned/pearls of wisdom she shared was the 聽importance of building a brand, being a lifelong learner and adhering to the Golden Rule.</p> <p dir="ltr">This deserving Momentum Award recipient began her career with an administrative residency at the VA North Texas HealthCare System where she had the opportunity to lead two of the systems鈥 largest departments, be involved in primary care clinics and help start the Polytrauma Program for veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan. From there, it was a seamless transition to Tenet Health Care where Malisha was part of the consulting group C2Q (Commitment to Quality) and worked with a team to improve key operating metrics.</p> <p dir="ltr">A year later, she joined Memorial Hermann Sugar Land (MHSL), rising quickly from Six Sigma Black Belt to Director of Perioperative Services to Director of Hospital Operations and ultimately to Chief Operations Officer and Vice President of Operations. In that role, she oversaw a $93 million expansion project that added 60 beds, an additional medical plaza and expanded services. She was the Executive Champion for six years for MHSL鈥檚 鈥淛ourney to Excellence鈥 as it adopted and integrated the Baldrige framework. Her leadership played an integral role in MHSL receiving the nationally prestigious Malcolm Baldrige Award in November 2016.</p> <p dir="ltr">Currently, Malisha is Vice President of Operations at Memorial Hermann Southwest Hospital, a 547-bed not-for-profit facility in southwest Houston where she has operational and business development responsibility for both clinical and non-clinical departments ranging from perioperative services to engineering.</p> <p dir="ltr">Professionally accomplished鈥攕he is FACHE board-certified in health care management鈥攕he is also civically committed. She is Chair鈥揈lect of the Fort Bend Chamber of Commerce and active with the Texas Hospital Association and the Indo-American Chamber of Commerce of Greater Houston which last year honored her with its Young Professional of the Year award. In September 2017, she was recognized as one of the Top 15 Business Women in Houston by the National Diversity Council. As this married, mother of two noted in an AVISO profile last year, 鈥淚t is the people I work with who give me energy and purpose. Making a difference in the lives of our patients and employees is what drives me.鈥 聽</p> <p dir="ltr">The HCADAA established the Momentum Award in 2015 to recognize performance excellence in health care management in young careerists. Previous recipients include Jim Brown 鈥99 FACHE, Chief Development Officer at HCA Gulf Coast in Houston and Michael Roussos 鈥03, Administrator at University Hospital in San Antonio.</p></div> </div> <p>鈥淭hroughout our country, there is a great need for more purpose-driven leadership.鈥 So says Bill Hyslop 鈥75, FACHE for whom developing strong leadership has formed the bedrock of his career.</p> <p>A native Texan born in Del Rio, Bill鈥檚 early ambition was to become a physician like his father. However, struggling through chemistry at North Texas State convinced him otherwise. After graduating with a science degree in 1969 and expecting to be drafted鈥擵iet Nam was escalating鈥 Bill bided his time supervising 20 technicians at Scott &White Hospital in Temple, Texas. While there, he took advantage of the eight-month-long opportunity to learn 鈥渁 great deal about leadership roles in hospitals.鈥 Prior to his release from the U.S. Army, he learned about 性爱天堂鈥檚 HCAD Program which he completed in 1975, thus beginning a long and distinguished career in the health care industry.</p> <p>An administrative residency at Parkland Hospital in Dallas was followed by a number of leadership positions including ER Administrator, Assistant Administrator, COO, VP and CEO at hospital systems throughout Texas culminating with Memorial in Houston and St. Luke鈥檚 in San Antonio. In the wake of a number of hospital mergers and consolidations during the early 90鈥檚, Bill left hospitals and started a consulting and business development company with his brother. The venture attracted clients from across the country and initiated two successful start-up companies. After consulting for five years with MD Anderson, his largest client, he chose to join them full time as Vice President of their supporting companies: MD Anderson Physicians Network and the MD Anderson Services Corporation. He would remain there for the next 18 years, the final eight as President and CEO.</p> <p>During his tenure, Bill oversaw the development of the MD Anderson Cancer Network, a group of more than 40 hospitals across the country and several international ones. The Cancer Network was designed to extend MD Anderson鈥檚 mission to eliminate cancer by affiliating with excellent hospitals to share its intellectual property, best practices, faculty and research in meaningful and data-driven ways. For patients, that meant many could receive the best possible cancer care without leaving their own communities. While justifiably proud of the Cancer Network, which is recognized as the largest and premier cancer network in the country, he adds 鈥渘ever losing sight of mission and its moral purpose in all my leadership roles is a very personal sense of accomplishment that gives me pride.鈥 In February 2017, Bill鈥檚 contributions to health care were recognized with a congratulatory proclamation read in the Texas House of Representatives.</p> <p>Although Bill retired from MD Anderson earlier this year, he has not abandoned his focus on health care and leadership. Together with his friend and colleague Bill Hughes, he recently launched Hyslop Hughes LLC, a consulting and business development initiative intended to share their life鈥檚 experiences, knowledge, skills and expertise with health care organizations across the country. They are building a team鈥攃urrently numbering five and counting鈥攐f highly experienced health care professionals. 鈥淲e are a boutique firm with great depth and reasonable fees and our goal is to make a difference, transform health care, support meaningful leadership and have fun.鈥</p> <p>When there鈥檚 time for fun, Bill can be found on the golf course or enjoying boating and water sports with his wife and blended family of five grown children and six grandchildren. Also active in his community, Bill serves on the Houston Hospice Board of Directors and the Board of the local ACHE chapter. Last Spring, he taught a graduate course on the basics of the U.S. health care system in the School of Allied Professionals at MD Anderson. He lauds the 性爱天堂 HCAD Program for 性爱天堂 having always opened doors for him and has served as a preceptor for graduate students, a guest lecturer on campus and a mentor to many. His bi-monthly column on leadership appears in national business journals (<a href="http://www.bizjournals.com/">www.bizjournals.com</a>), noting 鈥渋mproving young leaders and supporting C-suite leadership remains an important focus for me.鈥</p></div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" class="block block-layout-builder Resources<br /> Community Hospital Corporation</p> <p dir="ltr">Dallasite Laurie Breedlove 鈥88, FACHE, SPHR found her career in health care by process of elimination, a process that began in a high school Management Internship Program. Because she had an interest in medicine鈥攈er mother was a retail pharmacist鈥 and a desire to help people, Laurie chose an internship that rotated her through all the departments of a local hospital.</p> <p dir="ltr">She began college as a pre-med major but discovered she didn鈥檛 like the labs or the incredibly competitive nature of pre-med. Accounting seemed like a good choice until she did an internal audit internship at a national bank in Dallas. 鈥淎fter that summer, I knew I didn鈥檛 want to be an auditor.鈥</p> <p dir="ltr">Researching additional possibilities in the medical field led her to hospital administration and 性爱天堂, where she found a good fit for her collaborative nature and her interest in helping people through medicine. With health care administration, she could 鈥渟till help people, just in a different way.鈥</p> <p dir="ltr">Laurie began her health care career at Presbyterian Healthcare System in Dallas where she was fortunate to have 性爱天堂 HCAD alumnus Doug Hawthorne 鈥69, 鈥72, FACHE as her preceptor. 鈥淭his relationship has lasted my entire career鈥 she says 鈥渁nd Doug is still someone I can call for advice or assistance. As a result of a great residency, I was able to move immediately into an assistant administrator role.鈥</p> <p dir="ltr">In addition to its strong residency program and a cadre of incredibly supportive alumni, Laurie lauds the 性爱天堂 HCAD Program for producing generalists. 鈥淲hile it can be a hindrance not to have a technical specialty or clinical background鈥 she explains 鈥渋t is positive in that so many sectors of health care are possible career paths. As a generalist, I developed a sense that I could try anything and if I didn鈥檛 know about a topic or how to do something, I had the courage and confidence to assume I could figure it out.鈥</p> <p dir="ltr">Being a courageous and confident generalist led to successful tenures as Chief Financial Officer/Vice President of Administration for BloodCare in Dallas, Director of Clinical Practice for Simmons Cancer Center at UT Southwestern in Dallas and Administrator for Patient Care Services at Presbyterian Hospital Dallas.</p> <p dir="ltr">In May 2005, Laurie joined Dallas-based Community Hospital Corporation (CHC), as Vice President and then Senior Vice President for Human Resources. 鈥淐aring for others keeps many people motivated; however, the hours and days are unending and the resources to perform their work have become scarce. As a result, having a culture of respect, integrity and excellence becomes critical so that people can thrive in the workplace. Caring and supportive co-workers throughout the organization are critical and employees must feel the leadership cares about them鈥 she insists. She is proud of the fact that, as a team, CHC cultivates that type of atmosphere and helps 鈥渉ospitals continue to be viable in their communities.鈥</p> <p dir="ltr">A skilled leader and certified Senior Professional in Human Resources (SPHR), Laurie received the Regent鈥檚 Award from the North Texas Chapter of the American College of Healthcare Executives, an organization of which she is a former President. 聽She has also been involved with several non-profit organizations and served on the advisory boards of Our Children鈥檚 House and the Ronald McDonald House, both in the Dallas area.</p> <p dir="ltr">In an ironic aside, Laurie admits that early in her tenure at Carter BloodCare in Bedford, Texas, where she promoted volunteer blood donations, she only gave blood once. When her six-month-old goddaughter required open-heart surgery and needed blood, Laurie was found to be a match. She, of course, donated the blood but proved to be such a 鈥渉ard stick鈥濃攊t took three technicians to get the job done鈥攕he was never again asked to be a donor. (Now, 22 years later, that child is a proud graduate of Texas A&M.)</p> <p dir="ltr">For Laurie, helping others is a family affair. Her husband of 12 years is the COO/General Manager at Seven Loaves Food Bank, housed in their church and one of the largest food banks in Collin County and they are the parents of a fourth grader. Consequently, their lives revolve around their daughter, her school and activities, the church and the food bank.</p> <p dir="ltr">Although Laurie finds health care an exciting and challenging industry, she notes that in today鈥檚 environment, the number of hospital roles, especially the opportunity to be a hospital CEO, are shrinking. She advises students and early careerists to remain open to other sectors of health care such as practice management, consulting, supply chain, human resources and numerous facets of elder care where many opportunities exist.</p></div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-categories"> <div He would pursue a Ph.D. in philosophy and teach at the university level. He ended up an executive at the largest health care system in Illinois; but it鈥檚 not as unlikely a transition as it sounds.</p> <p dir="ltr">While being inspired by his philosophy courses鈥攄espite being an economics major鈥擳rent worked in the Health Care Administration Department where he had a lot of interesting policy conversations with former HCAD Professor Bill McCaughrin. 鈥淚 appreciated the time he took with me who didn鈥檛 even understand the basics of health care delivery鈥 he recalls. After reviewing 100 very qualified CVs while serving on a search committee for a new philosophy professor, Trent decided he needed to follow another path. Undoubtedly imbued with the values of his service-oriented parents鈥攁 minister father and a teacher mother鈥攈e ultimately felt 鈥渉ealth care provided a wonderful way to serve my community.鈥 聽</p> <p dir="ltr">As it turned out, Trent was able to forge a successful career in health care and still enjoy many aspects associated with academic life to which he originally had been attracted.</p> <p dir="ltr">After completing 鈥渁n amazing residency鈥 at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston, he joined Evanston Northwestern Healthcare (now North Shore University Healthcare System) where he participated in a number of research projects and, in collaboration with various faculty, presented the research at a variety of regional and national conferences. He also published a number of peer-reviewed articles. 鈥淚t was a unique opportunity and one I will forever be grateful for鈥 he says.</p> <p dir="ltr">In 2007, Trent joined Advocate, a vast, non-profit, faith-based health care system with 400 care sites and 12 acute-care hospitals, as Director of Business Development and Strategic Planning. In 2013, he was promoted to Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Planning. 鈥淥ne of the best parts of my day is mentoring service line leaders鈥 he says. 鈥淐ollaborating with these leaders to imagine and develop the future of their service lines brings me a lot of joy. It also fulfills that desire I still have to teach one day.鈥</p> <p dir="ltr">His current focus, however, is leading efforts at both growing overall volumes while managing volumes of risk populations. Noting that Advocate has a higher percentage of revenue from global capitation contracts than many national organizations, he notes 鈥渁s part of Advocate鈥檚 population strategy, we鈥檝e entered into a number of joint venture ambulatory surgery centers.鈥 Making those centers successful while simultaneously backfilling lost surgeries in Advocate鈥檚 hospital ORs consumes much of his time and he is proud of the fact that Advocate has been a leader in MSSP savings, earning more than $33 million in shared savings.鈥 His biggest challenge remains balancing the fee for service vs. fees for value tension. 鈥淲hile these seem like polarizing opposite strategies, we鈥檙e determined to win at both鈥 he emphasizes. Despite the challenges, he remains motivated 鈥渒nowing my planning efforts will impact the health care my children will receive in the future.鈥</p> <p dir="ltr">Trent鈥榮 work has been recognized with the President鈥檚 Certificate of Merit Award in 2006 from the Central Association of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the best Management Innovation Poster in 2008 from the ACHE Congress and the Service Award from ACHE in 2016.</p> <p dir="ltr">Trent and his wife, also a 性爱天堂 undergraduate, have lived in the Chicago area since the late 1990s and have two young children. A league volleyball player himself, one of Trent鈥檚 favorite pastimes and 鈥渁 ton of fun鈥 is coaching his daughter鈥檚 volleyball team. He also enjoys hanging out with friends and cross-country skiing. Having no family in the area, most vacations involve visiting relatives who are spread across the country from the Bay Area in California to Philadelphia on the East Coast. Though he lacks nearby family, Trent says one of the advantages of living in the Chicago area is that the ACHE Congress is held there every year. Then, with a grin, 鈥渢hat means I am usually able to attend the HCAD dinner even if I don鈥檛 attend the conference.鈥</p></div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" Officer<br /> McAlester Regional Health Center</p> <p dir="ltr">鈥淚 believe, in the history of 性爱天堂鈥檚 HCAD Program, I am the only alumnus to become a CIO.鈥 How Jason Bray 鈥05 arrived at that distinction and his passion for that role is quite a story.</p> <p dir="ltr">Jason鈥檚 initial interest in the health care industry was admittedly superficial. While an undergraduate majoring in finance, he visited a friend鈥檚 mother in the hospital and thought 鈥(just gonna be honest) how neat it would be to wear p.j.s (scrubs) to work everyday.鈥 It wasn鈥檛 until the patient died two years later and the hospital CEO 鈥渢ook me under her wing鈥 that Jason鈥檚 passion for health care blossomed.</p> <p dir="ltr">Having earned a MBA and working at INTEGRIS Health in Oklahoma City, Jason was speaking at a United Way event in nearby Edmond about his dream of becoming a hospital CEO. It was during this speech when 性爱天堂 HCAD alumni Stan Hupfeld 鈥72, FACHE and Bruce Lawrence 鈥82, FACHE (CEO and COO of INTEGRIS Health, respectively, at the time) told him after his speech that, in order to achieve that goal, he needed a master鈥檚 and 性爱天堂 was the best place to get it. While in the HCAD Program at 性爱天堂, he found his CEO 鈥 Stan - a tough reviewer of his work. 鈥淗e wanted to redline every paper I turned in. It was a bloodbath of red ink but it helped me tremendously in becoming a better writer.鈥</p> <p dir="ltr">Over the next several years, Stan and Bruce continued to mentor Jason and he 鈥渃an鈥檛 thank them enough.鈥 Bruce subsequently hired Jason as IT CFO for INTEGRIS where he was given the opportunity to grow his passion for IT. In 2004, Jason left to consult with IBM where he 鈥済ained about 30 years of experience in three.鈥</p> <p dir="ltr">It was the tragic and technologically preventable loss of his closest and oldest friend鈥檚 wife that cemented Jason鈥檚 passion to use IT to improve health care. Unaware of a previously diagnosed anomalistic aorta, doctors nicked hers during a routine tracheotomy causing her death. 鈥漈his story inspires me daily when it comes to the importance of health care technology and its capabilities to save lives鈥 he notes somberly.</p> <p dir="ltr">As CIO of McAlester Regional Health Center in McAlester, Oklahoma, Jason says 鈥渢he reason I love the CIO role so much is because I get to be the connector point for department鈥檚 problems and how technology can help.鈥 Plus, rapidly advancing technology, which allows for new applications in areas that previously could not be helped, 鈥渄efinitely keeps you on your toes.鈥</p> <p dir="ltr">Jason is also keeping an eye on artificial intelligence (AI). 鈥淲atson with IBM is such a phenomenal invention鈥 he exclaims. 鈥淎 doctor reads about half a dozen medical research papers in a month; Watson can read half a million in about 15 seconds.鈥 Today鈥檚 telemedicine, he predicts, will in years to come be a form of AI, perhaps leading to Watson on a cart or at each bedside. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 a little out there鈥 he admits 鈥渂ut we have robots doing surgery today so why not?鈥</p> <p dir="ltr">In 2002, while serving as CIO at the Oklahoma State University Medical Center, Jason received the Leader of the Year Award. Because Jason was nominated by the nursing staff, it holds special meaning since 鈥渞arely does the clinical staff appreciate the technology group.鈥 However, the 鈥渁mazing clinical staffs I have worked with at INTEGRIS, OSU, Methodist and now McAlester have truly made my job extremely rewarding.鈥</p> <p dir="ltr">Jason is married to his high school sweetheart and they are parents to four boys, one of whom is autistic. He spends a lot of his free time with his family, enjoys golf and serves on the State of Oklahoma Board of Technology and the Oklahoma State University Okmulgee and Autism of Oklahoma Boards. In August, he was asked to testify before the Oklahoma House of Representatives about the state of health care in rural America and Oklahoma fulfilling 鈥渁 lifelong dream to speak at the Capitol.鈥</p> <p dir="ltr">Dedicated and deeply committed to impacting all facets of health care positively through technology, Jason has been resisting offers to jump into operations. 鈥淢y passion for IT is really where I think I will remain for the foreseeable future.鈥</p></div> </div> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-categories"> <div class="field field--name-field-categories field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__items"> <div class="tag-wrapper field__item"> <div class="taxonomy-term vocabulary-category d-inline-block mx-2"> <a href="/academics/departments/health-care-administration/health-connections/archives/december-2017" class="badge rounded-0 text-uppercase text-white" style="background-color: #094d60;"> <div class="text-wrap field field--name-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">December 2017</div> </a> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="mt-5 typography-base block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-author" data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_author"> <div class="field field--name-field-author field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"><div class="border border-light rounded-sm p-3"> <div class="d-flex align-items-center mb-3"> <i class="far fa-user mr-3"></i> <a href="/news/author/aviso-contributors" class="h5 text-dark m-0"> <div class="field field--name-name field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">AVISO Contributors</div> </a> </div> <div class="clearfix text-formatted field field--name-field-bio field--type-text-long field--label-hidden field__item"><p>AVISO is written and produced by members of the Health Care Administration Alumni Association in partnership with the Office of Alumni Relations.聽</p> <p><a class="btn btn-primary btn-sm" href="/academics/departments/health-care-administration/aviso">AVISO Newsletter</a></p></div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div> <div class="container"> <div class="row bs-1col"> <div class="bs-region bs-region--main"> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="pt-3 my-5"> <div class="container"> <div class="row bs-1col"> <div class="col bs-region bs-region--main"> </div> </div> </div> </div> <div class="layout layout--onecol"> <div> </div> </div> Thu, 07 Dec 2017 16:56:28 +0000 dclark2 32376 at HCAD Chair Report - December 2017 /academics/departments/health-care-administration/health-connections/december-2017/chair-report <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">HCAD Chair Report - December 2017</span> <span class="field field--name-uid field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden"><span>dclark2</span></span> <span class="field field--name-created field--type-created field--label-hidden"><time datetime="2017-12-06T10:57:59-06:00" class="datetime">Wednesday, December 6, 2017</time></span> <div class="mt-n5"> <div class="container"> <div class="row justify-content-center bs-1col"> <div class="col-12 col-lg-10 bs-region bs-region--main"> <div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_thumbnail_image" class="block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-thumbnail-image"> <div class="field field--name-field-thumbnail-image field--type-entity-reference field--label-hidden field__item"> <img loading="lazy" src="/sites/default/files/styles/media_970x520/public/2021-03/health-connections-report.jpg?itok=-6MCrgQD" width="970" height="546" alt="Health connections newsletter report graphic" class="img-fluid image-style-media-970x520" /></div> </div> <div class="h1 typography-serif text-primary-darker p-0 text-break mt-5 block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestorytitle" data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:title"> <span class="field field--name-title field--type-string field--label-hidden">HCAD Chair Report - December 2017</span> </div> <div class="h4 mb-4 typography-crimson text-break block block-layout-builder block-field-blocknodestoryfield-sub-heading" data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_sub_heading"> <div class="field field--name-field-sub-heading field--type-string field--label-hidden field__item">Edward J. Our Second Year On Campus students are getting ready to go off on their residencies. Once again, Ms. Sharon Hubenak, Director of Recruitment and Residencies, did an amazing job in getting all of our On Campus students a residency placement. They have been engaged in a number of 鈥渞eal life鈥 projects in their capstone and finance classes this semester. Once again, groups of 3-4 students participated in our internal case competition which required an analysis of the Boerne, TX market and the decision to build a new facility for a local health care system. The all-class project this year involved working with Methodist Healthcare Ministries as they open a new clinic on the southeast side of San Antonio. The study includes asset mapping, a community needs survey, examining the social determinants of health as well as researching nationwide best practices. The final deliverable includes recommendations for how they should organize their new clinic in a way to get out in front of the upstream needs of the community and provide a roadmap for how they should enter future markets. 聽</p> <p dir="ltr">In addition to these projects, each group has its own consulting project with a partner organization. 聽These include:</p> <ul dir="ltr"><li>Business plan for a cranial neurosurgery service line for a suburban Houston hospital.</li> <li>Throughput analysis and recommendations for improvement for a hospital in Central Texas.</li> <li>Behavioral health needs assessment for a local hospital system.</li> <li>Creating a protocol for triage in the post-acute care space for a post-acute care physician group.</li> <li>Development of an urgent care expansion strategy for a children鈥檚 hospital.</li> <li>Development of a strategy for the expansion of the spine service line for a system in North Texas.</li> </ul><p dir="ltr">All of these projects were open-ended by design. Each project had a faculty adviser but the students worked directly with the organization. They all involved a presentation to senior leaders in the organization at their facilities. If you have an idea for a project for next year鈥檚 class, please let me know. 聽We鈥檇 love to have you involved with us!</p> <p dir="ltr">We also have two great cohorts of Executive students working with us. It is always impressive to see how our Executive students manage to balance their time in the Program with their normal lives at work and at home. 聽Yet, the quality of their work continues to exceed our expectations. If you have identified any 鈥渦p and coming鈥 leaders in your organization who would benefit from our degree, please send them our way.</p> <p dir="ltr">At the Program level, we are in the midst of our self-study year for our CAHME reaccreditation. We anticipate calling on many of you to help us when our site-visit team is on campus in the Fall of 2018.</p> <p dir="ltr">So there are many exciting things happening here. I would love to talk further with you about these and all the other happenings.
