Reflecting on this past year, I remain energized by the activities of our HCAD Program and our alumni. This year, we expanded our local chapter events and had great fun with alumni gatherings in Austin, Dallas/Fort Worth, Houston, Oklahoma City, Denver and Chicago. From casual happy hours to large formal events—coming together as HCAD alumni and sharing memories, laughter, stories, and support is what keeps our alumni network strong.

In partnership with the Health Care Administration Department at ԰, the HCAD Alumni Association Board has been brainstorming ways to increase connectivity as alumni. Based on feedback from an alumni survey, the Alumni Board made the decision to change the date of the Dean Duce Award Dinner to coincide with ԰’s Alumni Weekend with the goal of hosting an event over Alumni Weekend that honored distinguished alumni as well as to celebrate class reunions.

I am so pleased to report that our alumni dinner was another great success. With nearly 170 in attendance, the turnout was one of the largest we have had at an HCAD Alumni Awards dinner. The evening was full of celebration as we began the evening by recognizing the three previous Dean Duce Award winners in attendance, and celebrating the 20th reunion of the Class of 1998.

Another highlight of the evening was thanking Mary Stefl, HCAD professor, for over 30 years of dedication and leadership of the HCAD program before she embarks on her next chapter—retirement. We look forward to postcards from her trip to New Zealand and wish her all the best! Though retired, her dedication will continue as she will be instrumental in leading fundraising efforts for the HCAD Program.

This year, our Momentum Award recipients were Holly Elliott ’05 and Peyton Elliott ’07. For over the past decade, Holly and Peyton have each led successful health care careers, both climbing the ranks at their respective organizations. It was mentioned to me by a graduate that a highlight during the on-campus time was the visit from Holly and Peyton who took the time to talk to the class about balancing careers and family—a valuable lesson for all.

The energy in the room remained strong as Sally Hurt-Deitch ’03 was presented the Dean Duce Award for 2017-2018. Throughout her career, she has not shied away from new challenges. Hurt-Deitch’s passion for health care is contagious and listening to her speak about her love for her family, her calling in health care, and her approach to leadership was inspiring.

I look forward to seeing you at our next national HCAD Alumni Association event in Chicago. Please mark your calendars and plan to join us on Tuesday, March 5, 2019, from 6-8 pm, at the HCADAA Community Reception. The event, courtesy of Corinne Smith ’86 ’94, will take place at Clark Hill Strasburger Law Office, at 130 East Randolph Street, Suite 3900, Chicago, IL 60601.

All of these events are supported by the generosity of our alumni and corporate sponsors. The success of our Annual Fund campaign led by Stefl, Smith, Kevin Ormand ’98, along with the support of many of our alumni on the committee, will allow for the students to continue to attend events such as ACHE, case competitions and local networking events.Thank you to all who made their 2018 annual donation and are already planning for their 2019 annual giving contribution.

I wish you a very happy and safe holiday season. As always, don’t hesitate to reach out if there is anything you’d like to discuss.

Warm regards,

Heidi Pandya ’00, MS-HCAD ’05
President, HCAD Alumni Association Board The Duce Award was established in the 1970s by the HCADAA to honor a graduate of the program who has shown outstanding leadership and made significant contributions to the field of health services administration.

Hurt-Deitch is chief nursing officer (CNO) and vice president of Patient Care Services with Tenet Health. “Receiving this award is definitely a highlight in my career,” she says. “Although the award is a reflection of the impact I have had in the health care community, I feel the award is a reflection of all the wonderful people with whom I have had the pleasure of working. All of these individuals have excelled by utilizing their gifts to make their organizations better.”

Hurt-Deitch began her career in hospital administration holding multiple administrative positions including CNO and chief operating officer (COO). Her first position as chief executive officer (CEO) was at the University of Oklahoma Medical Center in Edmond,Oklahoma. In 2007 she joined Tenet Health, where she served in a number of CEO positions before being named Group CEO for Tenet El Paso and Rio Grande Valley hospitals. She was named to her current position in May 2018.

As her career has progressed, Hurt-Deitch says the most challenging aspect for her has been the transition from the hospital CNO role to the hospital CEO role, noting nursing and health care is a true calling for her. She says she is most motivated by the opportunity to find solutions that will help provide better patient care. She also likes to reach across disciplines in order to understand a hospital’s operations at every level.

“There is always so much to learn” she says. “Each new role has its own sense of risk in that if you fail, you can derail your career. At the same time, you can’t stand still.”

Happily, Hurt-Deitch says it’s the people with whom she works and the patients they serve that make those risks pale in comparison to the joys. She’s also grateful for the support she has received along the way.

Undoubtedly, much of that support has come from the strong HCAD alumni network that includes lasting friendships and strong personal relationships. “It’s pretty phenomenal,” she says.

Many organizations have recognized Hurt-Deitch’s contributions to the health care industry. She was named one of health care’s 10 Women Leaders to Watch by Modern Healthcare magazine and the American Federation of Hospitals honored her with its Corris Boyd Leadership Award. Her alma mater, the University of Texas at El Paso (UTEP), named her a Distinguished Alumna—the first recipient from the UTEP’s College of Nursing to receive this honor.

In addition to her awesome responsibilities, Hurt-Deitch is active in her professional organizations. She is president of the National Association of Latino Healthcare Executives, chair-elect for the Texas Hospital Association, and is regent-at-large for the American College of Healthcare Executives. She is also a member of the Board of Directors for the Federal Reserve Bank of Dallas-El Paso Branch.

Outside of her professional role, Hurt-Deitch is the mother of five boys. “Spending time with my family is important to me” she explains, “and when I’m home every day starts with all of us together for breakfast.” Because it’s their special time together, she gladly caters to each individual’s desires. “I’m like a short-order cook for my family,” she laughs. That and a very accomplished health care executive.

The Leonard Duce Award was created in honor of the first dean of the Graduate School at ԰. Beginning in 1962, Duce played a key role in establishing the Health Care Administration Department, and his tireless dedication contributed significantly to the program becoming one of the best in the nation. The award recognizes leadership and success in the field of health care administration and has been given annually since 1976.

<div She was visiting San Antonio during Preceptors’ Conference. “When we met, we both knew this was the beginning of a great life together.” He is Peyton Elliott ’07. She is Holly Elliott ’05. They are the joint recipients of the 2018 ԰ Health Care Administration Alumni Association (HCADAA) Momentum Award. The award was presented on Oct. 18, 2018 during the annual dinner at The Pearl Studio in San Antonio. The Momentum Award was established the in 2015 to recognize performance excellence in health care management in young careerists.

After an administrative fellowship at Memorial Hermann in Houston, Holly began her career there as director of operations. In 2010, she joined Children’s Memorial Hermann Hospital as director of business development and The Fetal Center before becoming chief operating officer (COO). In February 2017, she was named vice president of Women’s and Children’s Services with HCA (Hospital Corporation of America) Gulf Coast Division’s The Woman’s Hospital of Texas.

Peyton began his career at ԰ Mother Frances Hospital in Tyler, Texas. After an administration fellowship, he joined Houston Methodist Hospital System—holding positions at Methodist Sugar Land Hospital and the corporate office of Houston Methodist Hospital System. He served as vice president of operations and finance at Houston Methodist West Hospital, which he helped develop and open in 2010 before being named chief executive officer (CEO) of HCA Healthcare Gulf Coast Division—affiliated Park Plaza Hospital in Houston. He will assume his new role on Dec. 29, 2018. He is a member of ACHE, serves on the Board of Directors of the Katy Economic Development Council and is an alumnus of the Leadership Development Council of the Texas Hospital Association.

Holly says the couple have been intentional with their respective careers to ensure that they do not have conflicts at work. “We differentiated our careers early on in order to make sure that we could both progress when the timing was right,” she explains. That approach has worked well as her interests have always been in women’s and children’s services and he has always thrived in operations and finance roles. Both acknowledge the ԰ HCAD program as influential in their careers and appreciate the vibrancy of the alumni network. “You very quickly identify your fellow HCAD alumni when entering a new organization,” says Holly.

“Now that we are both in executive level roles in HCA within the same division, we continue to differentiate as best as possible. It has actually been a much easier transition than we both thought. We respect and support each other’s professional careers. Now it is exciting to be on the same team at HCA,” she says.

Upon learning the couple would receive the Momentum Award, Holly was “surprised” and “speechless.” Thrilled at sharing the award with Peyton she says, “I could not imagine experiencing it any differently.”

In addition to their passion for the same industry, the Elliotts love golfing together and any activity that they can do as a family, which includes two young children and an English cocker spaniel. On weekends they are often found on their pontoon boat with family and friends at a parent’s lake house.

<div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" Founding Partner
Sante Fe Sabbatical
Santa Fe, NM

For Gordon Hawthorne ’71, ’74, “԰ was my laboratory for gaining social, critical thinking, and professional competencies—the health care field was and remains my laboratory for mastery of the profession.”

Hawthorne’s mastery of the profession began with his residency and increasing responsibilities in positions with the Baptist Medical System (now Baptist Health) in Little Rock, Arkansas where he earned his doctorate of jurisprudence degree at night. During the President Bill Clinton years of health care reform and managed care, Hawthorne led the repositioning of the system brand and designed, in partnership with the chief operating officer (COO) of Arkansas Blue Cross, an early-entry integrated financing and delivery system that included a statewide hospital network, provider-owned HMO (health management organization), and an integrated medical group. Elements of that model are still in place today with a focus on value-based care and population health.

After roughly 20 years in health care systems, Hawthorne “identified a predisposition for consulting.” He left Baptist to form his own consulting company prior to joining the health care division of Hay Group, a global consulting firm in 1996. Ten years later, Diversified Search, a global executive search firm, recruited him as an equity partner, health care practice leader, and president. He remained in the firm’s leadership until recently, but continues to serve as a senior adviser.

As a consultant, Hawthorne worked with more than 80 health care markets across the country interacting with boards, CEOs and executive leadership of several hundred health care organizations. “Although the issues and market challenges are often similar and predictable, their histories (souls), current cultures, leadership intent, and tone are very unique,” he says. “Consulting at this level is personal in nature as clients engage you for the insight, perspective, and value you bring. I truly value my long-term leadership clients whom I have supported in both their successes and some of their challenging transitions.”

In 2017, Hawthorne completed his last executive search for Diversified Search. The task was finding a replacement for the founding CEO of Camden Coalition, a national model for dealing with complex care patients. By coincidence, his younger daughter was their chief strategy officer. Working with her to co-facilitate a strategy retreat for their National Center Advisory Board was “a very meaningful example of experiencing first-hand the upcoming generations of health care leadership,” he recounts proudly.

In 2016, Hawthorne moved from Washington, D.C. to Santa Fe, New Mexico full-time and formed Santa Fe Sabbatical, his professional platform for continued professional and pro bono advisory work. Santa Fe Sabbatical encourages individuals and teams to step back when faced with increased complexity and discontent and “provides the bridge for leaders to lead from an emerging future as opposed to dealing with the future while mired in the status quo of current thinking.”

He currently restricts his work to a few select advisory clients a year but remains keenly interested in two emerging areas of health care: end of life care and behavioral care, specifically the science of emerging treatment models for substance abuse and addictions. Not surprisingly, he is active in the Santa Fe recovery community.

Hawthorne says his personal capstone is that he has a partner of 20 years, two successful, married adult daughters from an early marriage, and four grandchildren. He is active on community boards and the advisory board of the ԰ HCAD Program, he volunteers at a homeless shelter, serves on a grief ministry, continues his almost daily habit of journaling and declares himself an “evolving minimalist, environmentalist and part-time art collector (very eclectic).”

He enjoys spending time with his partner, attends the theater, cinema, and “one obligatory opera” a year at the Santa Fe Opera. He stays fit with the help of a personal trainer and pure food from their organic garden. “My serenity strategy includes periods of solitude and reflection, reading, hiking, being around water, unstructured travel and practicing hospitality with friends and family.”

“I need all this, as I am disturbed daily by the lack of civility and leadership in this country and the increasing bias, discrimination and growing economic and social disparity.”

To students or young careerists, Hawthorne says “given the disruption and speed with which the industry is changing, we are all in some form young careerists faced with increased complexity and challenges.” Despite the complexity and challenges, he maintains “the deeper satisfaction weighed against the seemingly unresolvable issues that make working in health care always motivating, dynamic and compelling.”

<div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" class="block Administrator/Management Consultant,
CURE Health Management Services
Executive Director, Juneau Symphony
Juneau, AK

If it seems like Joe Davis-Fleming ’86, FACHE is all over the map, it’s because he is. Physically. Culturally. Professionally.

Coming from his native culture— a mix of Mayan, Central American and Caribbean with some English grand and great grandfather physicians thrown in—he has always felt very much at ease working in culturally-diverse communities. A first-generation American growing up in Chicago, Davis-Fleming knew by age 7 that he wanted to work in health care, originally aspiring to become a doctor. In college, he discovered a talent—and distinct preference —for the business and administration side of health care.

Early in his career, he joined CURE International, a non-profit, faith-based organization that operates charitable hospitals and medical training programs in 26 countries. “This provided me a most rewarding and meaningful way to use my skills to serve the poor and work with many Christians. ԰’s HCAD Program, the best decision I ever made—played a big part in developing those skills. I am forever grateful for being invited to be part of such a reputable academic institution and program, and be affiliated with the many highly-successful alumni health care leaders. We’re truly like a family.”

Davis-Fleming’s assignments with CURE, among many others, have included leading a teaching hospital in Afghanistan, being chief executive officer (CEO) of the LBJ Tropical Medicine Center in Pago Pago, American Samoa, and launching his first world-class teaching hospital in Bangladesh. He’s justifiably proud that it has remained the leading health care provider in that country.

Not one to shy away from a challenge, Davis-Fleming’s experiences have ranged from completing a hospital during monsoon season to surviving dozens of life threatening situations including several bombings, and most recently a way-too-close encounter with a bear!

Even more daunting he claims is successfully navigating political and board governance dynamics during difficult periods of adjustment. “It takes some creative strategic problem solving to navigate through such challenges. My strong faith in God has carried me through the most difficult situations.” But the rewards are worth it. For Davis-Fleming that means “leaving an organization in much better financial, operational and patient care outcomes than when I first arrived.”

From Afghanistan, Davis-Fleming’s scope of responsibilities with CURE has expanded (he’s worked in or traveled to 55 countries) to overseeing other hospitals in their network and collaborating with and mentoring other hospital administrators from the host countries. His too-many-to-mention awards and honors “were all a surprise and I was flattered but I would much rather celebrate the accomplishments of my staff, colleagues, friends and family members.” Not surprisingly, he was honored as a Lifetime Fellow in ACHE earlier this year.

Currently, Davis-Fleming has taken on a “temporary stint” as executive director of the Juneau Symphony. The change in fields was relatively easy he says, because the skills he learned throughout his career are applicable to leading a successful high–profile arts organization. As a performing artist himself, he has performed in musical theater in Austin, Texas and Juneau, Alaska, and will have sung or acted in seven productions this season. As such, he easily relates to the organization’s issues and concerns. In his engaging fashion he says, “I love bringing the joy of music to a community that appreciates and celebrates the arts. I want to provide the best musical experience whether you are an orchestra musician or sitting in the audience, and for you to go home with a smile on your face.”

Although he loves his work with the Juneau Symphony, “I have not departed health care. It will always be my primary career passion. I intend to resume my global health care capacity-building work sometime in 2019, but not before seeing the Symphony through a very challenging transition. He aims to leave “a longtime legacy of business success and new future opportunities for his successor, board, staff, and the wonderful musicians.”

When he has a free moment, this gregarious whirlwind loves Fantasy Football and indulging in pizza, BBQ, craft beer, and coffee. His family is still based mainly in Chicago and Belize, and his son and daughter live in Austin. He delights in the fact that his under 30-year-old son, a creative art technologist, is following his career path having already visited more than 25 countries.

Obviously indefatigable, Davis-Fleming aspires “to lead an international health delivery model scale up, eventually become lead public health policy adviser/administrator for Alaska, U.S. Pacific Island Territories, my mother’s home country of Belize, complete my doctoral studies in global public health policy and administration, and set foot on my seventh and final continent—Antarctica.”

“I will always be in search of knowledge, my next challenge, my next adventure, and enduring friendships that include mentoring and guiding the next generation of talent.”

<div Administrative Officer
Medical City Healthcare
Dallas, TX

While earning her undergraduate degree at Baylor University in Waco, Texas, Laura Irvine ’96 became the first business school student to serve as a management intern at Hillcrest Baptist Medical Center (now Baylor Scott and White Hillcrest)—it was a fortuitous placement. The for-credit internship introduced her to health care administration as a career path that combined both her business and personal interests. In addition, several of the administrators happened to be ԰ HCAD graduates who in turn introduced her to the ԰ HCAD Program stressing its structure and value.

Recognizing that value, Irvine enrolled in the program and completed her HCAD residency at Methodist Health Systems based in Dallas. She spent 21 years with the system in increasingly responsible roles including president and system executive positions. In August 2017 she joined Medical City Healthcare, an affiliate of HCA’s North Texas Division, one of its largest divisions, with 14 hospitals, 11 ambulatory surgery centers, 30 CareNow urgent care centers, more than 4,400 active physicians, and 17,000 employees in the North Texas area. As vice president and chief administrative officer, Irvine’s primary focus is to expand Medical City Healthcare’s service footprint with an integrated approach to network access and regional outreach, hospital operations, and strategic planning.

Despite the complexities inherent to a large network, Irvine says the constant change in the industry is what makes health care such an exciting professional field. “Even with past and potential future changes in delivery and payment models, one thing remains constant: our communities’ need for excellent health care services and providers’ desire and passion to deliver that.”

Irvine’s passion for providing excellence in health care has not gone unnoticed. In addition to recognition from professional organizations, Modern Healthcare magazine honored her with its “Up and Comer’s” award. The American College of Healthcare Executives awarded her its Early Career Healthcare Executive Regent’s Award and D CEO magazine listed Irvine among the area’s “Most Influential Business Leaders” in 2016.

Irvine credits the basis of her success to ԰’s residency program which has a decades-long history of residency placements that provide a strong foundation of support for young graduates. The program “provided me with an entry into health care administration that I would not have achieved without an established and well-respected residency network,” she says. “Thus, I was positioned for success earlier in my career than I would have been without completing a residency program.”

When she isn’t working, Irvine and her husband spend many weekends cheering their teenage daughters’ volleyball games. “We enjoy seeing them excel in a team sport they love and from which they can learn life skills. When we are not in the gym, our family loves to travel.”

To young careerists about to enter the health care industry, especially women, Irvine offers some advice, “take your time in the beginning of your career to really understand hospital and other clinical providers’ operations. Always be mindful to ensure that you are bringing value to a project or team effort. Learn early to be an active listener meaning that you are taking others’ views into account and truly considering what they have to say.”

December 2018

Words by Mary Denny

AVISO Contributors

AVISO is written and produced by members of the Health Care Administration Alumni Association in partnership with the Office of Alumni Relations.

AVISO Newsletter

Fri, 07 Dec 2018 11:25:16 +0000 Anonymous 32431 at
