I’m proud that our alumni are active contributors to the health care industry and to the communities in which they serve.

I was grateful to have been able to spend time together with the board and alumni in Chicago earlier this year in March. This is always a great time to catch up with old friends and to make new ones. This year, our HCADAA hosted an evening reception on Tuesday, March 5, for our alumni attending ACHE. Many thanks to Corinne Smith ’86, MS-HCAD ’94 for hosting us at the Law office of Clark Hill Strasburger. The views from their offices were spectacular, and the event was a great success. I also would like to thank Heidi Pandya ’00, MS-HCAD ’05 who served as our HCADAA President for the past two years. Her leadership and dedication have been a great asset to the HCADAA board.

During our HCADAA board meeting, we discussed our continued commitment to connecting alumni across the country. Whether it’s a social hour in Austin during THA or a luncheon in Dallas during ԰ on Tour, our alumni continue to find ways to stay connected. If you have suggestions for alumni events in your area or ideas for improving communication, please let me know.

I would challenge each of you to think of ways you can give back to ԰'s HCAD Program to whatever degree you are comfortable. I do not mean just monetarily, though that, of course, is always welcome! There are many ways to give back, from career and academic mentoring to volunteering time on campus to helping the admissions office recruit new students. Great universities have active and involved alumni—let’s be great!

Lastly, please mark your calendars for Alumni Weekend 2019, which will be held October 3-6. We will kick off the alumni events with an awards dinner at the Pearl Stable in San Antonio on Thursday, October 3 from 6–9 pm. During the evening, we will recognize and honor the 2019 Dean Duce Award recipient and the 2019 Momentum Award recipient.

I look forward to seeing everyone in October—especially the class of 1999 as we mark our 20th!

Vanessa Saenz Smith B.S. ‘94, MS-HCAD '99
President, ԰ Health Care Administration Alumni Association
Cleveland, OH

In 2013, Tim Gibbons '85 parlayed his decades of experience in international health—including 25 years in Australia working with a variety of clinical and community providers including Accenture as National Director for Health Care, Australia—into a private entity that focuses on medical tourism and patient advocacy. GreenCarePlus+ was created for patients seeking global clinical resources for elective care, with a focus on Top 10 clinical facilities in the U.S. and around the globe.

The turnkey service that includes overall reviewing and planning for international care with choices in pricing, location and providers to best meet patients’ requirements links patients with providers and organizes travel and hospitality resources for patients and their families with institutions like the Mayo Clinic, MD Anderson Cancer Center in the U.S., the London Clinic or Bumrungrad International Hospital in Thailand abroad among other excellent providers in Singapore, Europe, South Africa and Latin America. And “Yes," he adds, “there is also outstanding and very affordable dental care available in Poland and Mexico.”

Recently, GreenCarePlus+ began advancing education, research and patient options involving medical cannabis. That component evolved from Tim’s longtime observation of how pain management, oncology, and palliative care services are provided internationally and were inspired by patients' continual for innovations and best practices in health.

In addition to his previous work with Australia’s single-payer system, which he believes is "one of the best medical models in the Commonwealth,” Tim has worked with dynamic organizations, such as the Pasteur Institute, advised the Japanese and Australian Governments on a Health Care City of the Future, and reviewed the development of health care resources for the Dubai 2025 Plan in the UAE.

“What keeps me motivated is the need for the best care and best practices when a patient is facing a clinical challenge” he says. “This is exceptionally important as the deceptions and confusion of the American health care insurance market proliferate in our current disruptive ACA marketplace. Patients can get a better price overseas when provided by American-trained physicians. With the new price transparency, it’s only going to get more exciting to see stateside health care costs compared to those overseas.”

Tim began his health care career at the Cleveland Clinic, where he learned a range of multidisciplinary management skills and launched EHealth, the first web-based service for the clinic. During his tenure, which coincided with the beginning of the technology revolution in health care, he earned his Master's in Health Care Administration at ԰, which he believes is “one of the nation’s best ACHE Programs for working executives.” He subsequently joined VHA Health Care system in St. Petersburg, Florida, opened the H. Lee Moffitt Cancer Center in Tampa, and worked for Pacific Care in Los Angeles before broadening his international experience.

“What I love most about my work is applying those core ԰ skills to international trends and opportunities. "Let’s face it,” he says. Advances and innovation in pharmacology, clinical research and education now occur with numerous international organizations and so does patient care. Global health challenges emerge, so keeping up with the technology and best practices is a continual motivator.”

A summer internship with the American Academy of Arts in NYC honed his skills for public speaking and presenting at health care conferences—“the toughest audience around." ԰ taught him “excellent management skills, including the delicate diplomacy that goes with every encounter you face in a rewarding career.” ԰ gives one the confidence to accept challenges, embrace innovations and approach solutions like a Tiger!” he says enthusiastically. “Having that degree is a critical step to a long and rewarding career.”

With a career that spans time zones and includes plenty of jetlag, Tim keeps balance in his life through the arts— “the best complement to the sciences.” He has served on the board of Tasmania Opera and Music theatre, created fund development programs for various arts and social service providers, and always enjoys travel and international developments. He also supports ԰ as a regional representative in Cleveland and participates in college days at local high schools for the Office of Admissions. A passionate humanitarian at heart, Tim remains an advocate for refugees and immigrants “who will always be the brightest and best fabric of a strong community."

Steven Burghart ‘98
President
SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital
St. Louis, MO

“Through our excellent health care services, we reveal the healing presence of God.” So reads the mission statement for SSM Cardinal Glennon Children’s Hospital (SSM CGC) in St. Louis where President Steven Burghart '98 proclaims, "Unequivocally, what I enjoy most about my work is the opportunity to serve this mission.”

That opportunity involves overseeing a 195-bed, non-profit hospital, one of only two ever built by the Catholic Church as a stand-alone children’s hospital that functions as a mini-health care system focusing on comprehensive care and health services and serving as a safety net for the greater St. Louis area. With the institution more than 60 percent funded by Medicaid, Steven’s primary challenge is to “provide the highest quality of care to as many patients as we can within a more limited financing structure.” While the challenge is particularly acute in children’s health, Steven believes that “the pressure on real-time, cost effective and access to a very scarce pool of specialized providers has the potential to make our portion of health care a thought leader for this work.”

A native Houstonian, Steven was planning a career doing clinical research in molecular genetics. After witnessing the incredible impact the M.D. Anderson System had on his mother’s cancer treatment and learning about health care administration as a career choice from his undergraduate lab partner, Steven changed course.

"(Health care administration) resonated with me as it seemed to offer a more personal connection to the health system than a lab setting,” he says, “and offered more diverse interactions and impact on the community."

While still a senior at Baylor University, Steven made a cold call to ԰ alumnus Karl Hittle '89, then CEO at Hillcrest in Waco, who generously met with him for more than an hour. “Without his kindness and ԰ affiliation, I may never have entered the field,” he acknowledges.

Lacking prerequisite business courses, Steven worried that he wouldn’t make it through the ԰ interview process. Fortunately, the “legendary Dr. Ted Sparling” explained that ԰ valued his strong science training and expressed his confidence that Steven would succeed.

“Without Dr. Sparling's insight and generosity, I may not have made it to ԰," he says gratefully. He also values Dr. Mary Stefl’s strong mentorship throughout his tenure in the program and, later, during his presidency of the Graduate Student Association.

Steven ultimately joined Tenet South Florida Healthcare and served in several Florida safety net institutions that required a turnaround in their finances and service scores. In his first senior administrative role as Associate Administrator at St. Mary’s Hospital in West Palm Beach, Steven worked hard to try to make a difference.

“The importance of all the support services with whom I worked was really brought home for me when my first child was born there in 2008,” he acknowledges. “To watch the care given to my wife and newborn from that perspective helped me see what an impact my work could have.”

While the public is focused on how expensive hospital core components of the provider network are, Steven points out that most hospital margins are very low and hopes that, at some point, people will gain greater insight into what makes up these costs. Administrators grapple with the pressure of providing excellent care with limited resources. The health care system is evolving toward more consumer-driven care and technological bypassing of traditional provider relationships. Steven is “fully confident that America’s health care workers will continue to show up and care for patients, in spite of financial pressures and a potential lack of public support based on these perceptions.” He notes that provider burnout is real, adding that "when our health workers make it through this window of time, I hope the public will also come to have a newfound respect and realization for what their caregivers have gone through.”

Personally, Steven is grateful to be blessed with a “beautiful family”—wife, Michelle, and three children—who have supported him through frequent moves, new schools, early mornings, and late evenings.

“Without their support, I don’t know how it would be possible to do this job,” Steven says. He and Michelle enjoy being an active part of their community and often focus on issues of health care and social determinants for children’s health, including serving on the SSM Health Cardinal Glennon Children’s Foundation Board and serving as Walk Chair for Make-a-Wish St. Louis Region’s “Walk for Wishes 2019.” He also maintains an advisory role with Ukulele Kids Club, an organization devoted to giving sick or injured children the gift of music. Along with his family activities and adventures, Steven maintains his personal passions for music of all kinds, the arts and the Liverpool Football Club. And, of course, for his work. “It’s such privilege to serve as a hospital leader.”

<div data-block-plugin-id="field_block:node:story:field_categories" class="block Children’s Hospital and Medical City Women’s Hospital
Dallas, TX

Although no one in her family ever worked in or was involved with health care, Jessica Rangel O’Neal '04 grew up fascinated by the field.

“I would watch any health care show on television,” she recalls. “The passion for health care, along with the ability to make a difference in the health and life of an individual—specifically in a hospital setting—drew me in at a very young age and continues to motivate me on a daily basis.”

That passion hasn’t gone unnoticed. In 2013, the DFW Hospital Council honored Jessica as Young Healthcare Executive of the Year, and the Dallas Chamber of Commerce named her one of its 40 under 40 young leaders.

Fulfilling her longtime aspiration, Jessica spent the bulk of her early career with Methodist Dallas Medical Center (MDMC). Following an Administrative Fellowship there, she served first as Director of Cancer Services and Neurosurgery, then progressed rapidly to Assistant Vice President of Operations and then Vice President of Operations and COO. She served as COO at West Florida Hospital for two years before assuming her current position last December.

Now CEO of Medical City Children’s Hospital and Medical City Women’s Hospital Dallas, part of Medical City Healthcare, Jessica oversees two hospitals that are physically attached to the primary acute care hospital Medical City Dallas. Combined, the facilities include 111 labor and delivery beds, 84 Level IV NICU beds and 208 pediatric beds. Services available at the hospitals include perinatal navigation, high-risk maternal and neonatal transport, dedicated OB triage, a congenital heart program, TeleNICU and TeleMFM, a Maternal Fetal Institute, which includes open-womb fetal surgery and a pediatric oncology program.

As CEO, Jessica faces constant demands but singles out two of the constant challenges for her: the shortages that exist for many health care disciplines (RNs, physicians, surgeons, etc.) and managing the many complexities of how hospitals are paid. “Reimbursement continues to shift from fee-for-service vs. a model built on outcomes and quality of care" she explains.

Coping with those and other challenges, Jessica draws regularly on the “amazing” foundation she received at ԰, noting that “the didactic portion of the HCAD Program curriculum coupled with the residency exposed me to a lot in a relatively short time.” She also credits the strong ԰ alumni network as being instrumental in her career development and maintains contact with numerous alumni to discuss health cares issues on a routine basis. What she enjoys most about her work are the people—employees, volunteers, physicians and patients—whom she works with and serves every day.

“Health care is a team sport,” she says “and it takes every individual in the facility to make it run 24/7/365."

When she isn’t working, Jessica enjoys spending time with her husband and their two children, ages two and five. She also makes time to work out every morning at 5 a.m.

To those considering a career in health care administration, Jessica cautions that "you have to want to serve and embrace the responsibility that individuals entrust us to care for them in their most vulnerable state.” She adds that she believes “working in health care administration is the most challenging yet most rewarding job one can have. There is never a dull moment.”

<div Executive
Sutter Health Valley Area
San Francisco Bay Area, CA

Jillian Springer '07, '10 opted for a career in health care because it was something she “could be passionate about every day.” Graduating from ԰ with a degree in business administration (finance) in 2007, she chose ԰’s HCAD Program because she felt challenged and inspired by its central mission of helping people help people.

“Having a career in health care administration would allow me to connect back to purpose on a daily basis," she says. And connect she did.

For almost a decade, Jillian has been at the forefront of modernizing and improving health care. As an Administrative Resident at California Pacific Medical Center (CPMC) in San Francisco, a Sutter Health affiliate, she experienced unions, a hospital rebuild process and Joint Commission, all within the context of a larger health system that serves 1% of the nation’s population. She also led CPMC’s preparation and successful visit response for the California Department of Public Health’s pilot Patient Safety Licensing Survey and became a Certified Lean Workshop Leader during the year.

A promotion to the role of Manager for Neurosciences challenged her with responsibility for CPMC’s stroke, epilepsy, EEG, Alzheimer’s and dementia and neurology telemedicine programs areas, as well as an ophthalmology clinic, diagnostic center and residency program. In that position, she built a telemedicine program that covered an area from the Oregon border to California’s San Joaquin Valley, oversaw an operational turnaround where she discovered and addressed serious issues, including anti-kickback and start violations and employee feuds and layoffs.

“This experience taught me that not everyone is engaged in doing what is right,” she says, “and that doing what is easy can sometimes get in the way.”

She also encountered “the opportunity and challenge of a lifetime.” When the hospital received a $21 million endowment gift for an Alzheimer’s and dementia program, Jillian was charged with developing, opening and operating it. Her responsibilities ran the gamut from managing construction, creating a charge master, developing policies, and hiring and training staff, to meeting expectations of the donor family.

She was also one of only 25 selected annually from across the Sutter Health System for its prestigious, nine-month internal Leadership Academy. A year later, Jillian was part of a small group of leaders tasked with revamping the annual Sutter Health President’s Award with a focus on partnership and innovation. After winning an organization-wide vote, her stroke telemedicine program won the inaugural first place award.

When a telemedicine company tried to recruit her, CPMC “re-recruited” her to lead its telehealth efforts as Regional Director for Sutter Health’s West Bay Region, as well as to continue leading their Ray Dolby Brain Health Center (RDBHC). She also led pilot programs in cardiology, pediatrics and neurology telemedicine and launched CPMC’s research and education components for the RDBHC.

A move to Sutter Care at Home (SCAH) as Valley Area Regional Director of Hospice Operations presented a new set of challenges. Encountering an unprecedented number of high-level executive departures, Jillian, at one point, was covering three layers of leadership simultaneously. Still, she managed to turn the financially troubled region around.

Last fall, Jillian became Cardiovascular Service Line Executive for Sutter Health’s Valley Area, responsible for strategic planning and clinical integration of that service line across all Sutter Health Valley hospitals, medical foundations, medical groups and private practices. She says the most rewarding and stressful aspects of the job are the same: “building trust with multiple stakeholders and finding common ground where little or none existed before.”

After only 45 days on the job, Jillian kicked off her region's participation in its new Bundled Payment for Care Improvement (BPCI)-Advanced Pilot for two clinical episodes: Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) for Inpatient and Outpatient.

“We decided to participate at three hospitals with private practice and Sutter Health medical group doctors,” she says. “We will work to improve quality as a collective group and will be rewarded, or not, as one so this is a great step in the direction of clinical integration through a mechanism that supports aligned incentives. This new pilot allows us to come together and tackle challenges across the continuum of care so that each of our PCI patients served in the Valley Area receive the highest quality care from start to finish.”

Currently just back to work after maternity leave—her son was born last November—Jillian and her husband, Justin Borsuk, who received a degree in communication from ԰ in 2004, are “enjoying our incredibly animated, happy boy.” When time permits, they enjoy hiking the canyon and nature areas behind their East Bay home, sampling the wonderfully diverse food in their neighborhood, and visiting family and friends.

“I always look back and think how ԰'s undergraduate and HCAD Program taught me how to learn in a way that prepared me for the real world,” Jillian says. “My goal as a leader is to motivate, challenge and inspire others to do the work that is required to support the health of the community where I live.”

With the spring semester concluded, the HCAD Classes of 2019 and 2020 look back at all we have experienced and accomplished this semester. The Class of 2019 began their residencies this January and have learned a lot from the experiences and the mentorship provided to them at their organizations. We are so proud of their hard work and appreciate the guidance they have offered to the Class of 2020 as we prepared for and experienced Preceptors’ Conference.

As for the Class of 2020, we had a busy but rewarding semester full of new experiences. First, we would like to thank the HCAD alumni for their support of the annual trip to Chicago. Each student in our class was able to attend ACHE Congress and learned valuable lessons through the sessions provided, as well as interactions with other MHA programs. We would like to thank the many alumni who participated in mock interviews with our classmates to help us prepare for Preceptors’ Conference. We greatly appreciate the advice and feedback given during these interviews.

Our class was extremely thankful for the opportunity to participate in case competitions in the spring semester. For the first time, ԰ sent a team of three students to The Ohio State University Case Competition in Columbus, Ohio. These students were selected by their faculty and peers to represent the Class of 2020. The team presented its proposal for how to grow the Bariatric Surgery Service Line for Baptist Health System, located in Jacksonville, Florida. While they did not advance to the finals, they received wonderful feedback on their strategies from the judges and enjoyed the entire experience. Our class also competed in the Cleveland Clinic Case Competition. ԰ had six teams submit proposals on how to expand the Cleveland Clinic + Oscar insurance product. Of 55 teams that submitted cases for review, three of ԰’s teams were invited to present their strategies among 16 finalists. Two teams advanced to the semifinals, where they presented among the top eight teams. We are so proud of their amazing work! While our teams did not advance to the top four, ԰ had the largest number of teams at the competition, and we were able to share our passion for this program with other universities. We are so grateful for your support of these national competitions! These cases allow us to think strategically and prepare us to become future innovative leaders.

Additionally, the HCAD faculty has provided us with meaningful lectures and projects that continue to challenge and develop us individually. These include completing Community Health Needs Assessments over unique health care markets, exploring the economic and financial implications of health care and learning about how policy impacts this industry. We have worked on completing Strategic Business Plan Proposals, Financial Organizational Analyses, and Tiger-Tank Ideations. Tiger-Tank allows us to explore entrepreneurship and develop inventions that have the potential to solve healthcare’s biggest problems. We presented these solutions in a five-minute pitch at the end of this semester. Each of these projects required groups to think critically, communicate thoughtfully and challenge the status-quo. We were so excited to interview with the organizations attending Preceptors’ Conference and share the amazing experiences we had this semester!

On behalf of the Class of 2020, thank you for your continued support of the ԰ HCAD program. We are honored to be part of a program with such a giving and engaged alumni network. This program would not be the same without your support!

Taylor Miears
Class of 2020 Class President

June 2019

AVISO Contributors

AVISO is written and produced by members of the Health Care Administration Alumni Association in partnership with the Office of Alumni Relations.

AVISO Newsletter

Sat, 01 Jun 2019 18:57:34 +0000 Anonymous 20446 at
