New Faculty and Student Grants Awarded

In March of 2018 ÐÔ°®ÌìÌà was awarded a $800,000 grant from the Mellon Foundation. Part of the grant helps support and expand the Mellon Initiative’sÌýSummer Undergraduate Research Fellowship program, but another part of the grant will help us create new undergraduate research opportunities for ÐÔ°®ÌìÌà students. To develop these new research opportunities, over the next several years the Mellon Initiative will be awardingÌýgrants for facultyÌýto create arts/humanities labs, develop high impact research experiences in lower-division courses, and develop regional research projects. With the new grant from the Mellon Foundation we also are able to offer mini-grants for student-directed research projects.

The Mellon Initiative is proud to announce that this fall we awarded two of the new Faculty development grants and threeÌýstudent mini-grants!

Humanities/Arts Lab Development Grant

On November 29, 2018, we awarded our first Humanities Lab Development Grant to Dr. Andrew Kraebel (English), Dr. Kathryn Santos (English), and Dr. Corinne Pache (Classical Studies).ÌýThe Early Book and Manuscript labÌýwill Ìýprovide opportunities for students to study and transcribe previously unpublished texts from manuscripts and early printed books that date before c. 1650. ÌýStudents will be able to choose from Greek, Latin and English texts depending on their linguistic backgrounds and competencies.

ÌýDr. Johnson will be researching and supporting the design and creation of exhibits for the new San Antonio Holocaust museum, which is in the beginning of phases of expanding from its current location to a new 3,200 square foot facility. ÌýStudent research opportunities will include exhibits redesign, as well as publication of findings in a museum studies journal.

Student Mini-Grants

In addition to the faculty grants, this fall the Mellon Initiative awarded our first three mini-grants to students working on their own research projects at ÐÔ°®ÌìÌÃ. Kathleen Stansbury (ÐÔ°®ÌìÌà ‘19) was awarded a mini-grant to help her conduct archival research for her senior thesis about forced sterilization in Texas, Nhi Nguyen (ÐÔ°®ÌìÌà ‘19) was awarded a mini-grant to help her conduct fieldwork for her senior thesis about women’s agricultural land rights in Gujarat, India, and Beverly Morabito (ÐÔ°®ÌìÌà ‘19) was awarded a mini-grant to purchase art supplies for her senior art show.

Congratulations to all of the fall 2018 Mellon Initiative grant winners!
