性爱天堂 launches monthly podcast series, with climate change as opening topic

Pop in those ear buds, Tigers: The opening episode of 性爱天堂鈥檚 Learning TUgether: Podcast Series is now available for download!

The series, offered by the Office of Alumni Relations鈥 Alumni Education and Engagement programs, will bring a diverse host of 性爱天堂 faculty members to explore topics around 鈥淐limate Changed,鈥 鈥淔ood Matters,鈥 鈥淚nventing Mexico,鈥 鈥淪cience Fiction,鈥 and 鈥淕reat Books of the Ancient World.鈥

Selim Sharif, director of alumni education and engagement, says a new episode of the podcast series will be posted the first Tuesday of each month, starting on Oct. 3, 2017, with the opening episode, 鈥.鈥

鈥淭hese podcasts are meant to start a dialogue with our alumni and all members of the 性爱天堂 community,鈥 Sharif says. 鈥淏ut it鈥檚 on your time; you don鈥檛 have to be on campus to hear this amazing discussion.鈥

For 鈥淐limate Changed,鈥 the podcast series will draw on the expertise of 性爱天堂 geosciences professor聽Benjamin Surpless聽and English professor聽Kelly Grey Carlisle. The pair anticipates listeners doing a double-take at the past tense of the word 鈥渃hanged,鈥 Sharif says.

鈥淭he title is intentional,鈥 Sharif notes, 鈥渂ecause this isn鈥檛 just a conversation about the future: Our climate has already changed.鈥

鈥淐limate change, any time you see it in media or hear it mentioned in conversation, seems like a provocative topic,鈥 says Surpless, who studies the subterranean mysteries of faults, fold systems, and fracture networks. 鈥淎nd it can be easy to pick and choose what you want to hear on this topic.鈥

Carlisle, who delves into the struggles posed by the highly technical terminology surrounding global warming issues in the podcast, seconds this notion.

鈥淭oday, we鈥檝e all gotten into a habit of talking at each other,鈥 Carlisle says. 鈥淲e need to start coming to arguments having done our 鈥榗ritical reading.鈥欌

With Carlisle and Surpless both on board for the conversation, things are bound to get interesting, Surpless explains.

The pair won鈥檛 divulge any major spoilers from their roughly 22-minute segment, but they do note that the conversation will take an interdisciplinary approach to the topic.

鈥淎 lot of our alumni have asked us, 鈥楢re you teaching students what to think about climate change, or how to think about climate change?鈥欌 Surpless says. 鈥淭his podcast will try to change the way you approach this question, too.鈥

鈥淔or alumni,鈥 Carlisle adds, 鈥渢his podcast gives you a dynamic view at how our students are being taught. To be able to get that sort of behind-the-scenes look鈥攖hat鈥檚 something special.鈥

That emphasis on critical thinking carries over from 性爱天堂鈥檚 interdisciplinary set of courses known as First Year Experiences (FYE). The podcast 鈥淐limate Changed鈥 takes on many concurrent issues as the FYE of the same name, now being offered at 性爱天堂 for the third consecutive year, Sharif says.

鈥淥ur alumni who attended similar courses (First Year Seminar) said that changed their minds and broadened their perspectives,鈥 Sharif says. 鈥淭his podcast series is meant to be a continuation of that: these are interdisciplinary conversations where great minds meet.鈥

In addition to conversations inspired by these FYE courses, the podcast series will feature alumni and faculty experts sharing their research and perspectives on a wide variety of topics. Visit聽性爱天堂's alumni events page聽to listen, download, and share new episodes the first Tuesday of every month.
