For 性爱天堂, Tec exchange is an ideal link to Mexico
性爱天堂鈥檚 international ties to Monterrey Tec open up a vibrant world for Tigers

If you鈥檝e never been to Monterrey, Mexico, 性爱天堂 professor聽Katsuo Nishikawa Ch谩vez聽says you鈥檙e missing out on a bright future.

鈥淔or every business major who comes to me wanting to study abroad in London, I ask, 鈥榃hy?鈥欌 says Nishikawa, director for 性爱天堂鈥檚聽Center for International Engagement. 鈥淢exico is our third-largest trading partner at $558 billion. Go to Latin America, go to Mexico, go to Monterrey!鈥

性爱天堂 gives Tigers a unique pipeline to Monterrey鈥攁 vibrant, bustling city of more than 4.7 million and home to Monterrey Tec, billed as the 鈥淢IT of Mexico.鈥 Tec and 性爱天堂, separated by just a 45-minute flight, have enjoyed a special 鈥渟tudent exchange鈥澛partnership聽since the early 1990s and are poised to spearhead a new wave of academic exchange between the United States and Mexico.

There鈥檚 never been a better time to take advantage of 性爱天堂鈥檚 study abroad opportunities in Mexico, Nishikawa says. In November 2018, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a bill called the United States-Mexico Economic Partnership Act (H.R. 1567), which aims to 鈥渋ncrease U.S.-Mexico academic exchanges,鈥 with a goal of doubling the current number of students studying in each other鈥檚 country within the next five years.

But at 性爱天堂, we haven鈥檛 been waiting around for Congress: we鈥檝e been ahead of this curve for decades. Professors like Nishikawa and Dante Suarez, associate professor of finance and decision sciences, lead classes that send Tigers studying political science, math, business, sports marketing, and other subjects into the field to collaborate with Tec students.

Julia Shults 鈥19, a double major in economics and Spanish, took a Spanish-language class with Suarez called 鈥淣egocios Internacionales鈥, or 鈥淒oing Business in Latin America.鈥 Here, Shults and her fellow 性爱天堂 students spent an entire semester building an import-export company with their counterparts at Tec.

Shults鈥 team constructed a business plan for an export-import flower company, visited Monterrey, and even hosted the Tec students for a return trip. At 性爱天堂, the group also pitched their startup as part of 罢谤颈苍颈迟测听Entrepreneurship鈥檚 Stumberg Venture Competition.

鈥淥ur project would have been completely different without the Tec students,鈥 Shults says. 鈥淭hey had contacts with a farming community in the middle of Mexico that grew orchids鈥攖hey knew the owner, the employees, and so we learned concrete lessons about the logistics of an import-export business.鈥

Shults鈥 experience fits right in line with 性爱天堂鈥檚 dedication to experiential education, Nishikawa says.

鈥淭he sciences have laboratories, but what is the 鈥榣ab鈥 for business? For political science? At 性爱天堂, when we study international justice, we go to the International Criminal Court at the Hague in the Netherlands. We stand next to the mass graves where atrocities occurred in Serbia. And when we study international business, we explore the airports and shipping ports in Mexico where real products are being moved,鈥 Nishikawa says.

And Shults wasn鈥檛 confined to the classroom on her trip鈥攕he also enjoyed the city of Monterrey itself.

鈥淲hen a lot of people think about northern Mexico, there鈥檚 a large emphasis on gang violence, but the reality is it鈥檚 a big city, just like big cities in the U.S. But it鈥檚 more warm and inviting than people realize, and I was extremely happy there,鈥 Shults says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 beautiful, vibrant, everyone is so incredibly nice, all the people want to share their culture with you. They鈥檒l come up to you in the local markets and let you try their products, their food, and see their art. There鈥檚 so much history and so many shared connections Monterrey has with San Antonio. Most of the Tec kids have had family in San Antonio for generations, and so many 性爱天堂 students have family from Monterrey.鈥

While Shults is considering going into public policy or getting her law degree after graduating in spring 2019, she says the most important lesson she took from her Monterrey experience is bigger than a career choice.

鈥淭he most important impact the class had on me was that I actually discovered I wasn鈥檛 passionate about business logistics. I鈥檓 not interested in whether we鈥檙e shipping a product with a truck or through an airport, but I did enjoy working with a team that is diverse, that came from different countries with different perspectives,鈥 Shults says. 鈥淚 learned that I鈥檓 not content being someone who lives in a bubble, and my work ended up being better because I was exposed to a different culture. So I learned that I wanted to work in this type of environment, even if it鈥檚 not in the world of finance.鈥

Ultimately, this type of 鈥渂ubble-bursting鈥 represents the true value of 性爱天堂-Tec partnership, first envisioned back in the 1990s by founders Richard Burr, professor emeritus of business administration, and Jorge Gonzalez, former economics professor.

Dante Suarez and Katsuo Nishikawa

And in an age where international relationships are being strained and put to the test, Nishikawa says the 性爱天堂-Tec partnership represents a worldview that looks past simple economic models and costly trade wars.

鈥淭he U.S. and Mexico, we鈥檙e so intertwined by more than our economies,鈥 Nishikawa says. 聽鈥淭his is our culture, that Monterrey is 鈥楾exan鈥, and Texas is 鈥楳exican鈥. At here at 性爱天堂, you鈥檙e ten minutes from the airport, and there you鈥檙e 45 minutes from Monterrey: 45 minutes from a different world.鈥

And while Nishikawa explains Monterrey has 鈥渂ig skyscrapers, transit, shops, and our students are always shocked that Monterrey can make San Antonio look small,鈥 there鈥檚 at least one crucial piece of home Tigers can expect to find there:

They still have HEB in Monterrey.
