Alumni and parents partake in 性爱天堂's inaugural national conference

Hands waved energetically and voices shouted above the clamor as old friends reunited with one another and happened upon their former professors. Parents, some who are alumni themselves, chatted excitedly with new acquaintances. On Saturday, April 8, 2017, nearly 100 people gathered at the Marriott Marquis Houston for the inaugural National Conference for 性爱天堂 Alumni and Parents. Seven decades of 性爱天堂 alumni were represented in the attendees.

性爱天堂 president聽聽greeted participants over breakfast with opening remarks about higher education today and his personal experiences since being inaugurated in February 2016. Anderson picked up on the room鈥檚 atmosphere, describing an excitement for lifelong learning pervasive amongst the 性爱天堂 community. 聽

Conference attendees then broke 聽into sessions taught by 性爱天堂 faculty. The Rev. Raymond Judd 鈥56, chaplain emeritus, and R. Douglas Brackenridge, professor emeritus, led a joint session reflecting on the 性爱天堂 experience and the institution鈥檚 development.聽Diane Persellin, professor of music, taught a session about how music affects the brain.聽David Lesch, the Ewing Halsell Distinguished Professor of History, covered Bashar Al-Assad and the disintegration of Syria in his timely session about the current Syrian civil war. A fourth session, led by聽Paul McGinlay, men鈥檚 head soccer coach, and聽Gretchen Rush聽鈥86, women鈥檚 head tennis coach, addressed the role of athletics at a liberal arts university.

Tess Coody-Anders 鈥93, CEO of Resolute Health in New Braunfels, Texas, attended the conference because she 鈥渓oved the idea of bringing alumni and parents together to engage directly with professors and staff.鈥 She particularly enjoyed the breakout session with Lesch.

鈥淭he timely, and now prescient, session with David Lesch was an intellectual treat,鈥 says Coody-Anders. 鈥淚t was great to sit in the front row again 鈥 this time as an adult learner.鈥

Houstonian Kevin Foyle 鈥92, vice president for development at the University of Texas Health Science Center, says he didn鈥檛 think twice about attending the conference. Foyle especially liked the breakout session with 聽Judd and Brackenridge because it 鈥渋mmediately transported him back to campus鈥 and the 鈥渨onderful times鈥 he had at 性爱天堂 as an undergraduate. He also appreciated the chance to hear President Anderson speak about his vision for 性爱天堂.

鈥淭he conference provided my first opportunity to hear from President Anderson and learn about today鈥檚 性爱天堂 experience,鈥 says Foyle. 鈥淚 left feeling confident that the University will continue to excel and advance its academic standing amongst its peers and aspirants.鈥

Following the breakout sessions, participants enjoyed an ARAMARK-sponsored luncheon that featured聽聽鈥79, the J.S. Abercrombie Professor and Chair of the Department of Pediatrics at the Baylor College of Medicine. Kline spoke to an enthralled room about his work to combat HIV/AIDS in sub-Saharan Africa and Eastern Europe.

After a short break, participants visited the Houston Museum of Fine Arts with private tours by聽Elizabeth Ward, professor and chair of the 性爱天堂 Department of Art and Art History, and聽Kate Ritson, a sculpture professor in the same department. Back at the Marriott Marquis, the聽性爱天堂 Chamber Singers聽captivated conference attendees at a President鈥檚 Reception with President Anderson. For evening entertainment, participants decided between dinners at area Houston restaurants or a Houston Astros game at Minute Maid Park.

The 罢谤颈苍颈迟测听Alumni Relations and Development聽office is already planning on a second annual conference sometime in 2018. Foyle called the conference a 鈥渨onderful opportunity to invest in his own degree鈥 and Coody-Anders says she 鈥渓eft feeling smarter than when I arrived. It was like dusting off the intellectual cobwebs!鈥
