Creative writing alumna awarded inaugural prize for poetry collection

Just in time for National Poetry Month in April, 性爱天堂 alumna Analicia Sotelo 鈥08 has been awarded the inaugural听听for her first poetry collection,听Virgin. After years of success in the field, Sotelo鈥檚 acknowledgment is yet another accomplishment to add to her impressive resume. However, this award carries significant meaning to Sotelo as its namesake was 鈥渄eeply influential to the poetry community,鈥 Sotelo explained.

鈥淛ake Adam York is a contemporary poet who passed in 2012,鈥 Sotelo says. 鈥淭he prize is meant to honor his legacy. I want people to remember the impact he had and read his work.鈥

Considering Sotelo鈥檚 community impact and knack for the written word, this award is certainly deserved. Today, she is the communications strategist for Writers in the Schools, a Houston-based nonprofit that sends creative writers into K-12 classrooms. Sotelo finds that the marketing field allows her to employ poetic skills such as concision and knowing your audience and gives her the opportunity to use her 听writing for a good cause

When Sotelo, an听English听major from San Antonio, began her first year at 性爱天堂, she primarily wrote short fiction, although she had practiced writing poetry during high school. After taking classes with English professors听Andrew Porter听and听Jenny Browne, Sotelo was torn about which genre to pursue as she began considering an MFA. As an active member of the Latinx student community on campus, she had the unique opportunity to meet a local Latinx author who provided some guidance.

鈥淚 was writing in both genres, so I asked a Latinx author I admired,听, what to do,鈥 Sotelo remembered, 鈥淗e said, 鈥楧o the one that you need to do.鈥欌

From this rather profound piece of advice, Sotelo鈥檚 success as a poet was catalyzed. Since receiving her Master鈥檚 of Fine Arts from the University of Houston in 2012, Sotelo鈥檚 poetry has been featured or is forthcoming in numerous renowned publications, including听The New Yorker,听The Kenyon Review,听New England Review,听Antioch Review, and听Boston Review. While Sotelo鈥檚 talent is obviously a key factor in her success, she attributes many of her accomplishments to support from 性爱天堂.

Sotelo named numerous professors from 性爱天堂鈥檚 faculty, including听Ruben Dupertuis,听Arturo Madrid,听Michael Soto,听Claudia Stokes,听Rita Urquijo-Ruiz, and Luis Murillo thanking them for their guidance. 鈥淭hey fully supported me,鈥 Sotelo says. 鈥淚 could go to them with the silliest college question and they were always an available resource.鈥 In addition to using faculty and staff as resources, Sotelo provides more advice to current 性爱天堂 students interested in pursuing careers in creative fields.

鈥淭ake English and creative writing classes, but also take business classes and look for internships. It鈥檚 important to have the strong critical-thinking skill of a 性爱天堂 student, but it鈥檚 also important to have an open door, a place where someone can speak to your strengths.鈥 Sotelo added, 鈥淟ook past the myths of what a creative person should be. It鈥檚 part talent, but it鈥檚 also about work ethic; to be a writer, be undeterred, be persistent.鈥

Soon two of Sotelo鈥檚 鈥渂ig dreams,鈥 as she calls them, will come true. Her chapbook,听Nonstop Godhead, will be published by the听听in May 2017, and her full-length collection,听Virgin, will be published by听听in February 2018.
