National Columnist Mark Shields to speak at Maverick Lecture at ԰

The Maverick Lecture Series at ԰ celebrates its 10-year anniversary by featuring national political commentator Mark Shields, who will speak on “Politics and Policy: How Will History Judge Today’s Headlines?” on Tuesday, Nov. 27, at 7:30 p.m., in ԰’s Stieren Theater.

The Wall Street Journal has called Shields “the wittiest political analyst around and frequently the most trenchant, fair-minded and thoughtful.” The Washington Post has called him “a walking almanac of American politics.” A columnist and commentator known around the nation, Shields has worked in Washington through the administrations of 10 U.S. presidents. He was an editorial writer for The Washington Post, where he began writing his now nationally distributed column in 1979. Since 1988, Shields has provided weekly political analysis and commentary on national campaigns for the award-winning PBS NewsHour.

A graduate of the University of Notre Dame, Shields enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps before moving to Washington, D.C. For more than 11 years, he helped manage campaigns from the courthouse in 38 states to the White House. Shields has taught American politics and the press at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and Georgetown University’s Graduate School of Public Policy, and he was a fellow at Harvard’s Kennedy Institute of Politics. On the Campaign Trail, his book on the 1984 presidential campaign, has been called “funny” and “irreverent” and praised “for bringing that race to a magnificent light.”

The Maverick Lecture is dedicated to the memory of Maury Maverick Jr., a San Antonio native. A Texas icon, Maverick was a marine, legislator, civil rights lawyer, and journalist. This series focuses on the issues Maverick considered important to our state. The Maverick Lecture is underwritten by the William and Salomé Scanlan Foundation, and for the first time, KLRN Public Television is a community partner for this lifelong learning event.

The lecture is free to the public, but space is limited so reservations are encouraged by either calling 210-999-7375 or emailing rsvp@trinity.edu. The event will also be live streamed at .

Prior to the lecture, individuals may make reservations for the Dining TUgether , with a Maverick Lecture preview discussion by William G. Moll, retired CEO of KLRN-TV and retired CEO of Clear Channel Television. Dinner cost is $20 per person and seating is limited. Reservations may be made here.
