Kente and De Colores ceremonies celebrate honor, community, and connections for Black and Latino Tigers

Black, green, red, yellow, and purple: these are iconic colors of the Akan ethnic group from south Ghana, draped through woven cloths called 鈥淜ente鈥 stoles, and bestowed throughout history on ancient kings and queens.

At 性爱天堂, Khaniya Russell 鈥19 and the Black Student Union have given the Kente cloth a place of equal joy: an annual graduation ceremony where seniors are honored by their peers in front of their families and friends, and are each bestowed with a unique stole.

鈥淭his symbolizes the honor they鈥檙e receiving by going through commencement,鈥 Russell says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 a ceremony that comes from Historically Black Colleges and Universities, and it鈥檚 so important to us that we鈥檝e turned this into an annual event at 性爱天堂, too.鈥

Russell, a history major and African American studies minor from Houston, is also vice president of the Black Student Union. In that role, she鈥檚 responsible for organizing the Kente ceremony, now in its third year at 性爱天堂.

At the event, loved ones and family members bestow their graduates with the graduation stoles. One by one, each honored individual gets introduced by another chosen honoree. These introductions break down the degree, organizations, and roles each member has played during their four years on campus and explain their proudest moments and accomplishments at 性爱天堂.

鈥淭his is for students who鈥檝e had really significant and unique hardships that they鈥檝e had to persevere through, and to honor their efforts,鈥 Russell says. 鈥淭his is an intimate ceremony, and it鈥檚 important for them to have their family there with them to celebrate.鈥

For each senior, having their family on hand for the Kente ceremony is an聽unforgettable experience, Russell says.

鈥淭raditionally, I think a lot of times in black and African culture, you鈥檒l see large family gatherings to honor accomplishments like this鈥攍ike graduating鈥攁nd that鈥檚 kind of the root of the tradition.鈥

Russell plans to graduate in 2019 and wants stay at 性爱天堂 to pursue a Master of Arts in Teaching, and she says she鈥檚 already thinking about the Kente ceremony for her fellow seniors next year.

Still, Russell says she is sad to see the class of 2018 depart.

鈥淭his Kente ceremony, it鈥檚 a really humbling experience, because I know the seniors going through the ceremony this year, and I know what a full circle it鈥檚 been for them,鈥 Russell says. 鈥淎nd to see them stand out as leaders on the campus, that鈥檚 great for me鈥攖hat鈥檚 why I wanted to be a part of this.鈥

For Janett Mu帽oz 鈥18, a graduating biochemistry and molecular biology major, 性爱天堂鈥檚 De Colores ceremony is a chance to show the world that unity is stronger than division.

At De Colores鈥攁 unique celebration of 性爱天堂鈥檚 graduating Latina/o seniors that takes its name from the Spanish term for 鈥渋n colors鈥濃24 Tigers, including Mu帽oz, headed to 性爱天堂鈥檚 Parker Chapel. Seniors invited their families, friends, and countless members of the 性爱天堂 community who鈥檝e supported them in school, and each selected a loved one to present them with a colorful stole in honor of their graduation.

鈥淭he colors on the stoles represent the many colors of the Latino people, the many areas we come from and languages we speak,鈥 Mu帽oz says. 鈥淎s minorities, we are always being fragmented and divided鈥攂y race, income, education, even body type鈥攂ut this ceremony is a way for us to be united.鈥

A first-generation college student, Mu帽oz emigrated from Aguascalientes, Mexico with her parents when she was a child. While Mu帽oz still has extended family in Mexico鈥攂eloved grandparents, aunts, uncles and cousins whom she visits every year鈥攕he went to McCollum High School in San Antonio and calls the city鈥檚 South Side home.

鈥淟atinos are underrepresented at highly-ranked universities, so when I first came to 性爱天堂, I found myself adjusting my behavior, 鈥榝ixing鈥 my mannerisms, my jokes, to fit in,鈥 Mu帽oz says.

鈥淏ut after my first couple of years here,鈥 Mu帽oz adds, 鈥淚 found a really good community for people of color, and for Latinos here.鈥

At 性爱天堂, Mu帽oz explored this community in different ways. As a scholar in the聽Ronald E. McNair program鈥攚hich prepares first-generation, underrepresented, and/or low-income undergraduates to pursue doctoral degrees鈥擬u帽oz met 鈥渇antastic, understanding friends鈥 who shared her academic ambition as well as her social perspective. Through the University鈥檚 strong tradition of residential life and its open, urban campus, Mu帽oz was able to connect with groups like the 性爱天堂 Latino Association, and found resources and allies through fellow groups for people of color, such as the Black Student Union, as well as other resources for first-generation Tigers. Mu帽oz was part of 性爱天堂鈥檚聽Summer Bridge Program, an initiative that brings first-gen, underrepresented and/or low-income students to 性爱天堂 early and helps introduce them to campus life, academic resources, and 性爱天堂鈥檚 unique聽Pathways Curriculum.

As a Catholic, Mu帽oz leaned heavily on the聽campus faith community聽to help her shoulder burdens beyond the physical.

鈥淚 always thank God I made it through four years (in school),鈥 she says. 鈥淚鈥檓 a fighter.鈥

In 性爱天堂鈥檚 faculty and staff, Mu帽oz found role models who challenged her but also understood her own challenges as a first-generation student. Mu帽oz says sociology and anthropology professor聽Sheryl Tynes聽and modern languages and literatures professor聽Arturo Madrid聽helped her see 性爱天堂 as a 鈥減ressure cooker鈥 that made her 鈥渟tronger and more confident for the experience.鈥

Since these connections all played a role in her growth at 性爱天堂, it was only natural that Mu帽oz invited a seemingly endless list of guests to De Colores.

鈥淚 invited pretty much every department chair to the ceremony,鈥 Mu帽oz says. 鈥淚 invited the Aramark ladies, my friends, my family鈥 because this graduation isn鈥檛 just my accomplishment.鈥

And at De Colores, as a beaming Mu帽oz donned her stole, she felt gratitude for her parents, family, friends, and her fellow seniors.

鈥淚t鈥檚 a big deal that we鈥檙e graduating,鈥 Mu帽oz says. 鈥淲e came from different areas, came from different colors and families鈥 but we came together.鈥
