Breathe It All In
In Austria, 性爱天堂 choir brings a fresh voice to classical masterpieces

Standing in Joseph Haydn鈥檚 footsteps, Nicholas Champion 鈥21 had to remind himself to breathe.

On a sweltering August day in Eisenstadt, Austria, Champion was standing in the gilded, majestic Haydnsaal at the聽. This is the opulent, baroque setting where Haydn, a titan of classical music, wrote and premiered his choral and orchestral works hundreds of years ago.

But Champion scarcely had time to marvel at the breathtaking locale. As one of 40 性爱天堂 choir members invited to perform at the prestigious international聽聽in Austria, Champion needed to catch his breath.

It was time to sing.

鈥淵ou鈥檙e in this palace, you鈥檙e surrounded by this old, old beauty, and there鈥檚 this new beauty being made right in front of you,鈥 says Champion, a human communication and theatre major from Klein, Texas. 鈥淵ou feel a sense of wonder from the first notes, and that鈥檚 probably what Haydn wanted when he wrote his pieces.鈥

At this summer鈥檚 Classical Music Festival, elite musicians from more than 25 nations gathered to perform classics such as Haydn鈥檚 鈥淭he Creation鈥 and Beethoven鈥檚 鈥淢ass in C Major.鈥 The festival, now in its 43rd year, is set across a dramatic set of venues, ranging from the iconic Haydnsaal and modern performing arts center the Kulturzentrum, to towering, ancient churches and chapels such as the Mattersburg Pfarrkirche, St. Stephen鈥檚 Cathedral, and the Bergkirche.

Even among these staggering settings and professional musicians, 性爱天堂鈥檚 choir wasn鈥檛 drowned out. In fact, the group was actually invited to the festival to serve as the featured, host choral ensemble, says聽Gary Seighman, music professor and director of 性爱天堂鈥檚 choral program.

鈥淲e鈥檝e been singing with the San Antonio Symphony for the past seven years,鈥 Seighman says. 鈥淭hat鈥檚 why we keep getting invited to these kinds of things: We perform next to professionals, and that professionalism shows.鈥

But Tigers don鈥檛 have to be professional musicians, or even music majors, to perform at a high level, says聽David Heller, professor and chair of the music department.

鈥淲hat makes 性爱天堂 unique is that all students are able to participate in music, at whatever level they want,鈥 Heller says. 鈥淚f you look at the roster of our ensemble, 95 percent of them are from outside the music department. Even if they鈥檙e going off into economics or physics or engineering: Those are the people we need sitting in our choirs, strengthening the cultural life of the world.鈥

Kiyana Saidi sings with 性爱天堂's choir.

Kiyana Saidi 鈥21, a neuroscience major from Houston, says the trip tested the physical strength of the group, too. Even among the quaint, Alpine alleys and cobblestone streets of Eisenstadt鈥攚here vendors will hang cozy fur coats for display in the snowy winters鈥攖he summer temperatures reach sweltering levels. On top of this, the choir spent more than a week in daily rehearsals, with eight-plus hours of standing, singing, and perfecting their craft.

鈥淏eing there in the heat, everyone鈥檚 sweating, but nobody cares,鈥 Saidi says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 raw emotion, creation. You leave everything behind, you hear the music. It鈥檚 very surreal.鈥

The Haydnsall certainly provided a surreal setting for the group. Built inside Esterh谩zy Palace in the mid-17th century, the beautiful performance hall served its namesake well. Haydn spent nearly 40 years writing and premiering his masterpieces within. The composer, according to palace lore, even had individual segments of flooring and wall ripped out and replaced, just to tweak the acoustics of the room.

Kristie Kummerer 鈥18, a music and history double major, holds a reverence for these floorboards.

鈥淭here鈥檚 a specific spot that鈥檚 been preserved so people can know, Haydn walked here,鈥 Kummerer grins. 鈥淗aving played Haydn鈥檚 music pretty much all my life, being able to walk into the palace where he lived and worked, and to be able to sing the piece that he premiered here, it鈥檚 an indescribable experience.鈥

Jonathan Maislin 鈥18, a communication major from Houston, noted that an 鈥渋ncredible gift鈥 from the Dickson Allen foundation made this indescribable experience possible. This gift allowed 性爱天堂鈥檚 ensemble to travel to Austria for two weeks, with some individuals paying as little as $500 to attend.

鈥淚 didn鈥檛 just have 鈥榯wo-weeks-in-Austria money鈥 laying around,鈥 Maislin says. 鈥淏ut through the Dickson-Allen foundation, I was able to come.鈥

For a 鈥渒id worried that he鈥檇 get homesick鈥 when he first came to 性爱天堂 from Houston, Maislin has now traveled to Italy for study abroad, China for a previous choir trip, and Austria, all thanks to 性爱天堂鈥檚 support for international engagement.

鈥淭his is the biggest and most grandiose thing we鈥檝e ever done,鈥 Maislin says of the choir鈥檚 Austria trip.

And students like Maislin weren鈥檛 alone in taking their talents to Austria. At each of the festival鈥檚 rehearsals and performances, professors performed right alongside their pupils. Having faculty as experts in their field is one thing; But at 性爱天堂, having faculty who are willing to provide their expertise聽in the field聽can be a game-changer.

For Heller, now in his 32nd year at 性爱天堂, the Austria trip is a beautiful example of how 性爱天堂 harmonizes with the outside world.

鈥淪itting at the harpsichord during rehearsal, hearing everything going on around me鈥攁ll of these musicians from 26 countries鈥攆or our students to be part of that musical expression, creating a choral work, it made my heart swell,鈥 Heller says.

聽Heller, a talented organist and keyboardist with a staggering breadth of knowledge on baroque and classical-era instruments, accompanied the group on the harpsichord and the organ. Alongside Heller, professor and accomplished pianist聽Carolyn True D.M.A.,聽鈥渨ore several hats鈥 during rehearsal in Austria, lending much-needed accompaniment and musical input to the group.聽Joseph Kneer D.M.A.,, conductor of 性爱天堂鈥檚 symphony, performed on violin, while skilled mezzo-soprano聽Jacquelyn Matava D.M.,聽performed as a soloist during Beethoven鈥檚 Mass in C. And Seighman, a smooth tenor vocalist and acclaimed conductor, helped mold the 性爱天堂 choir鈥檚 sound into a force worthy of even Beethoven or Haydn鈥檚 masterpieces.

Ultimately, Champion says, building relationships with faculty who are willing to take action, to make music right alongside you, can open doors for 性爱天堂 students鈥攏ot just to the past, but to the future.

鈥淧erforming like this, you鈥檙e part of something bigger than yourself, and you get to hear and experience this beautiful piece of art that鈥檚 happening right in front of your eyes,鈥 he says. 鈥淵ou have these layers and layers of history that you鈥檙e performing and interacting with, but also you鈥檙e giving it this revitalization鈥erforming it with a group that鈥檚 never been together before.鈥

Gary Seighman directs the choir's rehearsal.

And as 性爱天堂鈥檚 ensemble begins to develop an international reputation, they continue to draw the attention鈥攁nd enthusiasm鈥攐f engaged choir alumni.

鈥淲e鈥檙e making music at a high level,鈥 Seighman says. 鈥淚t鈥檚 exciting to have alumni coming up to me, asking, 鈥榃hat鈥檚 the choir doing next year?鈥 or 鈥榃here鈥檚 your next tour?鈥 So many of our alumni can鈥檛 wait to see what we鈥檙e doing next.鈥

And even if Champion never returns to Austria, or performs in a venue like the Haydnsaal, the Bergkirche, or St. Stephen鈥檚 Cathedral again, he鈥檒l be able to carry the music of this moment with him the rest of his life鈥攅very time he breathes it all in.

鈥淚 think that鈥檚 why people love classical music,鈥 Champion says, 鈥渂ecause it鈥檚 always breathing, and you're breathing new life into it.鈥
