Alumna thrives in fast-paced, high-stakes milieu of global marketing

Ben茅 (Petty) Eaton 鈥09, B.A. Communication, Speech Communication with a minor in Business Administration

You鈥檝e seen the ads promoting Under Armour gear and apparel: 鈥淯nlike Any鈥 featuring American ballerina Misty Copeland, 鈥淢ake That Old鈥 featuring NBA star Stephen Curry, and 鈥淩ule Yourself鈥 featuring Olympic champion Michael Phelps, among many others. 聽Now meet the woman behind them: 性爱天堂 graduate Ben茅 (Petty) Eaton.

It鈥檚 a long way from the relative safety of the 鈥溞园焯 bubble鈥 to the fast-paced, high-stakes, demanding world of international marketing, and Ben茅 has sailed into that world and found not only a friendly harbor but also great success. As advertising and campaign integration manager within Under Armour鈥檚 Global Brand Management team, she develops brand strategy and plans and executes global advertising campaigns. 鈥淚t鈥檚 awesome to see a campaign come to life from an initial creative idea to a full blown initiative,鈥 she says. 鈥淚 am always amazed to see our global campaigns show up across the world in TV and social media from New York to Amsterdam to Shanghai.鈥 聽The job entails leading cross-functional teams across retail, wholesale, e-commerce, international media, social events, and PR to plan 360-degree campaign launches and activations. She is also the central point of contact with UA鈥檚 advertising agency of record, Droga5 (Ad Week鈥檚聽2016 Agency of the Year.) As key UA brand representative at film and photo shoots, she travels often to LA., New York, and San Francisco.

Sharp, passionate, and personable, Ben茅 loves her job and the entrepreneurial environment 鈥渞ich with people from all different walks of life.鈥 With almost palpable enthusiasm, she says, 鈥淓very day is different and every project opens new doors. It鈥檚 also incredible and inspiring to work with some of the world鈥檚 greatest athletes.鈥

Ben茅 聽initially found her inspiration on the 性爱天堂 campus, where she 鈥済rew up鈥 swimming in the pool and attending Vespers during the holidays. (Her father Ken Petty, advancement services manager, has worked at 性爱天堂 for more than 25 years.) 聽鈥淚 loved the environment and always looked forward to the day I would attend as a student,鈥 she says. 聽While her father exposed her to 性爱天堂鈥檚 many opportunities, her mother, who had a full-time job and was 鈥渋ncredible at balancing work and family,鈥 taught her 鈥渨hat it looks like to be a strong successful female in the workplace and how to chase both family and career ambitions.鈥

As a Tiger, Ben茅 鈥渞eally fell in love鈥 with the classes she took in the聽communication department, particularly 鈥淎dvertising & PR鈥 and 鈥淢edia and Society.鈥 She credits communication professor聽Jennifer Henderson聽with sparking her interest in the field, encouraging her to engage in communication research and take additional classes. 聽Other influential professors include聽Sammye Johnson聽in communication,聽Andrew Hansen聽in human communication and theatre, and聽Charlene Davis聽in business. 鈥淚 cherished my time at 性爱天堂,鈥 says Ben茅, who was member of Gamma Chi Delta sorority where she held roles as publicity and scholastic chairs. She also worked as a resident mentor (RM) for two years mentoring first-year students.

She spent her first postgraduate year at an advertising agency before entering the University of Houston鈥檚 Jack J. Valenti School of Communications, earning her M.A. while continuing to work at the agency. Later, she served as advertising manager at Houston鈥檚 Museum of Fine Arts.

When her husband, Kevin Eaton 鈥09, accepted an internal medicine residency at The Johns Hopkins Hospital, the couple moved to Baltimore. Ready to take her marketing career to the next level, Ben茅 accepted a role at Under Armour headquarters in the same city.

Ben茅 and Kevin live in Baltimore with their dog, Huxley. For fun she likes to read, run, practice yoga, and blog. She also admits to being a fashionista鈥斺淚 love fashion!鈥 As for future career plans, Ben茅 wants to continue in the marketing field with aspirations to one day becoming a chief marketing officer. 鈥淚 put a lot of pressure on myself when I graduated to find the 鈥榩erfect job鈥 and get into the right grad school,鈥 she recalls, an approach she advises against today. Instead, Ben茅 encourages new graduates to stay open to opportunities and not worry about having everything figured out immediately upon graduation. 鈥淚 would have never crafted my current career trajectory 10 years ago, but I鈥檓 glad I ended up where I am.鈥
