Rebecca Patterson, MBA, is a globally recognized investor and macro-economic researcher with more than 25 years of experience studying how politics and policy intersect with economic trends to drive financial markets.��

Patterson’s transition to finance came after several years working as a journalist, covering financial markets, policy, and politics in the U.S. and Europe. Throughout her career, she has served in executive positions for Bridgewater Associates, Bessemer Trust, and JPMorgan.��

Patterson has served on the New York Federal Reserve’s Investor Advisory and Foreign Exchange committees and the University of Florida’s Investment Corporation Advisory Board. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations, the Economic Club of New York, and the Bretton Woods Committee, and she currently chairs the Council for Economic Education. Patterson was included in American Banker''s list of Most Powerful Women in Finance for six consecutive years and was named to Forbes’ 50 Over 50 in 2022.��

Patterson brings a unique perspective to global macro forces, which she weaves into her views on major regions of the world and their economic and market outlooks for the year ahead and beyond. During her presentation, “Global Perspectives: What's Ahead for Major Economies in 2023 and Beyond,” Patterson addresses the following questions:

Michael McFaul

Michael McFaul, Ph.D., is a professor of political science and a Hoover Fellow at Stanford University and director and senior fellow at the Freeman Spogli Institute for International Studies. McFaul served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Russian Federation from January 2012 to February 2014. Before becoming the ambassador, he served for three years as the special assistant to the president and senior director for Russia and Eurasian Affairs at the National Security Council.��

McFaul has authored and co-edited of several monographs, including Advancing Democracy Abroad: Why We Should and How We Can (2009); Democracy and Authoritarianism in the Postcommunist World (2009); and Revolution in Orange: The Origins of Ukraine's Democratic Breakthrough (2006), to name a few. His New York Times best-selling book, From Cold War to Hot Peace: An American Ambassador in Putin’s Russia (2018), presents an inside account of U.S.-Russia relations.��

In his talk “Great Power Competition in the 21st Century: Lessons from the Cold War for Dealing with China and Russia Today,” McFaul first compares the power, ideology, and visions of global order of the United States, China, and Russia. Next, he compares what is similar and different between great power competition today and the Cold War. He ends with a set of prescriptions for how the United States can manage and win this current era of great power conflict, in part by avoiding some mistakes from the Cold War, but also in part by learning from some successes from the Cold War.

Marty Makary

Marty Makary, M.D., is a professor at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins Carey Business School and has been a visiting professor at over 20 medical schools. He is a member of the National Academy of Medicine and received the Nobility in Science Award from the National Pancreas Foundation. He is also the chairman of the African Mission Healthcare medical advisory board and has served in leadership roles at the World Health Organization.

Makary has published more than 250 scientific articles on the redesign of health care, medical innovation, and health equity, and he is the lead author of original publications on the surgery checklist. He is the editor-in-chief of Medpage Today and has written for The Washington Post, Wall Street Journal, The New York Times, and USA Today. His book Unaccountable turned into the TV series The Resident.

Using entertaining stories, Makary advocates for nonpartisan, common-sense ways to address medicine’s challenges in his talk “The Future of Healthcare.” He correlates the history of American medicine with its modern-day conundrums. Health care is complex, and its problems can be difficult to solve. Makary uses first-hand stories to illustrate the decision points that await policymakers and patients. He reviews the resultant scenarios and explains how consumers can prepare for upcoming changes to health care. In a nonpartisan way, he highlights both the exciting positive changes in health care as well as its concerning trends.
