Class of 2019 President Report
Updates from Mary Price Wey, 2019 Class President

The Fall Semester has just ended when the First Year students were working hard to make it through finals while the Second Year students were gearing up for residencies. I know I speak for everyone when I say what an incredible semester we’ve had and that we are looking forward to the future!

While residencies are at the forefront of the Second Year students’ minds, they have also done some amazing work this semester. A team was sent to the NAHSE Case competition where they made it to the semi-finals. A few First Year students were able to attend the conference and experience a case competition first hand. We are very proud of the hard work the NAHSE team put forth! The final project Second Year students were working on before their residencies were the capstone course projects. The areas these projects focused on include neurosurgical spine expansion, cranial neurosurgery service line, post-acute care, hospital throughput, behavioral health expansion and urgent care for pediatrics. Finally, Second Year students are eagerly anticipating the start of their residencies this January. While we are sad to see them go, we know they will do fantastic work!

As for the First Year students, we had two major projects that came to a close. The first was our Service Line project where each group chose a service line to study and present to the class and faculty. The second project is our Systems Project where the class was divided into four groups and each group studied and presented on a major health care system in the San Antonio area.

It is crazy to think that just four months ago, we were complete strangers with only the HCAD Program in common. Since that day, we have bonded in class over our diverse experiences and opinions. Our class discussions and activities are an incredible demonstration of the capabilities and potential we have as future administrators. We are looking forward to next semester and ACHE and Preceptors’ Conferences in the Spring. The first semester was just the start of what I am sure will be an exhilarating journey.

As the President of the Class of 2019, I join my colleagues in extending a heartfelt thank you for your continued support of the HCAD Program. We recognize that we would not have the Program that we do without our incredible faculty and engaged alumni network. Again, thank you!!
