Class Notes for HCAD alumni

Jim Elkins ’71 retired in late August 2016 after 22 years as Director of the Texas Center for Infectious Disease in San Antonio, TX. Jim’s health care career has spanned 45 years. His career has been divided between leadership roles in community hospitals and medical centers and public service, most often in Texas. In 1994, he directed public health hospitals and their associated clinics operated by the Texas Department of Health (now Texas Department of State Health Services) for treatment of tuberculosis, Hansen's disease and quarantine care for infectious diseases.

William Mason ’71, President Emeritus of the Baptist Health System of Jacksonville, Florida, has been elected Chairman of the AgeWell Institute at Baptist. AgeWell is a multi-specialty geriatric center fully dedicated to improving the health and quality of life of those over the age of 65. He was also recently elected to the Hall of Fame of his alma maters, Byrd High School of Shreveport, Louisiana and the University of North Florida, Jacksonville.

Steve Sanders ’73 retired after 32 years with the Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, Texas and most recently as the CEO of Memorial Hermann The Woodlands. In his retirement, he plans to be a consultant on a part-time basis post-retirement.Ìý

Jake Henry Jr. ’74 was inducted into The University of Tulsa’s Collins College of Business’ Hall of Fame in Oklahoma. Jake was named one of three outstanding business leaders for 2016. The Business Hall of Fame annually honors the widespread contributions of outstanding Tulsa business leaders who shape and strengthen the university, community, and economy. The Collins College of Business Hall of Fame has inducted 47 individuals since its establishment in 2000.

Lucas Snipes ’74 retired in June 2015. Most of Lucas’ career was spent at The Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, VA - formerly Roanoke Memorial and Roanoke Hospital Association. He began as an Administrative Resident and served 30 years and 16 different jobs later. In addition, he spent ten years leading rehab centers. While at Carilion, Lucas worked with and mentored more than 20 residents from ÐÔ°®ÌìÌà and served as preceptor in the latter years. His wife, Judie, was also a health executive - both of them are Fellows in ACHE. They continue to stay current with issues affecting the health care industry by attending conferences at the hospital and are active with their local ACHE HEG.

Bill Johnson ’76 retired in 2015 and is enjoying retirement very much--traveling and writing. His granddaughter was born last year. He definitely does not miss the 2 am calls from evening supervisors.

Phil Young B.A. ’76 was named CEO of The Hospitals of Providence East Campus Hospital in El Paso, TX. Prior, Phil was a hospital executive with more than 20 years of management experience in Tennessee. Phil most recently served as CEO of transitional facilities for Brentwood, TN-based LifePoint Health, operator of hospitals and other health care facilities in 22 states.

Markettea Johnson (Barnes) Beneke B.A. ’73, M.S.-HCAD ’77 was selected Senior Executive Director, Oncology Service Line at El Camino Hospital in Mountain View, CA.

Bill Garrett, Jr. ’79 recently retired from his profession and has relocated to Newport, NC.

Karen Heath ’82 became a family medicine physician in 1985. She has worked in South Carolina in private office and in Arizona with IHS for ten years. Karen is now retired and does volunteer work at an immigrant clinic and is teaching at SLU in St. Louis, MO.

We are saddened to announce that Pat Sobczak '82 passed away on November 12, 2013 in Durham, NC. He was born in Toledo, Ohio on January 12, 1952 to the late Daniel and Julia Sobczak. He had a lifelong zest for knowledge. In 1990, he graduated from the University of Alabama in Birmingham, Alabama with a Doctorate of Philosophy. In 2004, George Mason University in Fairfax, Virginia awarded him as an honor student to study comparative health care systems at Oxford University, England.

Betsy Bridges Babcock ’87 was named the Second Most Influential Woman in Food and Drink in the October 2016 issue of Food and Wine Magazine.Ìý

Mike Mullins ’87 was selected Senior Vice President for Ascension Health/Kansas Ministry Market Executive by St. Louis-based Ascension. In his new role, he will take over strategic and operational responsibility for Via Christi Health, based in Wichita, KS. Previously, he was COO of St. Vincent Health in Indianapolis, part of the Ascension Indiana Ministry Market. Prior to joining St. Vincent, Mike was Regional Vice President of Brentwood, TN-based Quorum Health Resources, where he provided leadership and operations support for 12 hospitals and strategic business arrangements in Colorado.

David Wagner ’87 was appointed CEO of the HCA-affiliated Pearland Medical Center in Pearland, TX. David had been Vice President of Facilities Management and Support Services at Tulsa, Oklahoma-based Saint Francis Health System since 2011.

Jim VanderSteeg ’89 became President and CEO of Covenant Health in Knoxville, TN. Previously, he had joined Covenant Health as Executive Vice President of Operations. Covenant Health has more than 10,000 employees and affiliated physicians and operates 10 hospitals and a number of outpatient services and clinics.

Jeff Bourgeois ’90 was promoted President/CEO of San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, NM. Previously, Jeff served as President of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Westover Hills in San Antonio, TX.

Russell Lloyd ’90 was selected as Director of the Wilkes-Barre VA Medical Center in Plains Township, PA. He will oversee the delivery of health care to approximately 40,000 veterans through a system with an operating budget of more than $258 million. Russell joined Veterans Affairs more than 20 years ago. Most recently, he served as Acting Director of the Central Texas Veterans Health Care System.

Lynn Pumfrey Falcone ’91 was appointed CEO of Cuero Community Hospital. She has worked in health care since 1991 when she began as a Health System Specialist at South Texas Veterans Hospital in San Antonio, TX. Lynn’s most recent job was COO at Resolute Health Hospital, a Baptist affiliate in New Braunfels, where she oversaw the design, construction, and management of the $220 million facility.

Gary Jepson ’92 was selected Administrative Director of Operations to the St. Anthony Physicians Group in Oklahoma City, OK.

Kyle Kirkpatrick ’94 was named Regional CEO of Emerus Holdings, Inc. in Dallas, TX. Previously, he worked with Deloitte Consulting.Ìý

David Biggerstaff ’95 was selected COO of Children’s Hospital Colorado in Aurora, CO. Previously, David served as President/COO of Children’s Medical Center of Dallas.

Gregg Davidson ’95, President and CEO of Skagit Regional Health based in Mount Vernon, WA, was a presenter at the Our Journey Continues: Skagit Regional Health's Roadmap to Diversity webinar in June 2016. This presentation was made possible by the Institute for Diversity in Health Management – An Affiliate of the American Hospital Association.

Xavier Villarreal ’97 was named CEO of North Hills Hospital in North Richland Hills, TX. With 18 years of health care leadership experience, Xavier joins North Hills Hospital – a member of the HCA North Texas Division – from CHRISTUS Health where he most recently served as Vice President and Chief Operating Officer of CHRISTUS Spohn Shoreline and Memorial Hospitals in Corpus Christi, TX.

Ray Wei ’97 was selected Vice President/Chief Information Officer of El Centro del Barrio (CentroMed) in San Antonio, TX.

Kevin Ormand ’98 was promoted Principal of The Chartis Group. Kevin is based in Austin, TX.

Jim Bohnsack B.S. ’97, M.S.-HCAD ’99 was named Vice President of Corporate Solutions and Strategy of CIOX Health. Jim is based in Dallas, TX.

Reza Kaleel B.A. ’96, M.S.-HCAD ’99 was named CEO of Kadlec Regional Medical Center in Richland, Washington. Previously, he served as Executive Vice President/ Chief Operating Officer of St. Mary's Medical Center in Grand Junction, CO.

Mike Roussos '03 was appointed as Hospital Administrator of University Hospital in San Antonio and prior, he served as CEO for HCA Mainland Medical Center since April 2015.

Mike Kelly ’05 accepted the position of Vice President of Surgical Strategy with Sunrise Hospital and Medical Center in Las Vegas, NV.

Bryan Braegger ’09 was named CEO by Yakima Regional Medical and Cardiac Center located in Yakima, WA. Bryan, who came to the hospital in 2014 as Chief Operating Officer, has served as Interim CEO since January 2016. He has more than 15 years of hospital leadership experience and has worked in hospitals in Utah, Illinois, Texas and Arkansas.

Sarina King ’09 was named the Director of Operations for Sleep Health MD based in Santa Cruz, CA. The facility has five locations in the surrounding areas.

Natalie Wilkins ’09 recently joined Cook Children’s Health Care System in Fort Worth, TX as Chief of Staff. This new position will play an integral role, supporting and coordinating strategic priorities for the system in alignment with the President and Chief Executive Officer Rick Merrill ’84. Previously, Natalie worked with North Texas Specialty Physicians where she most recently served as Administrative Director of Clinical Programs.

Tyler Wilson B.A. ’07, M.S.-HCAD ’09 recently was featured in the November 2016 edition of AlumNet, the ÐÔ°®ÌìÌà monthly e-newsletter. The article is titled Health Care Executive Tyler Wilson Advocates for Value-Based Care at Catholic Health Initiatives. Tyler serves as National Director of Clinically Integrated Network Development & Integrity at Catholic Health Initiatives in Denver, CO.

Jen Taylor Baker B.S. ’08, M.S.-HCAD ’10 was promoted to Director of Operational Excellence of Providence Health & Services in Anchorage, AK.

Randy Jobe ’10 was named VP of Physician Practices/Network Services to Stillwater Medical Center’s administration. Randy comes to Stillwater Medical with 25 years experience in executive operational leadership in multi-specialty physician practice, acute, and long-term care environments. Prior to his new role as Vice President with Stillwater Medical Center, Randy served with CoxHealth System/Ferrell-Duncan Clinic, Mercy Health System and INTEGRIS Health in executive leadership roles that included Vice President, Chief Operating Officer, and President for integrated clinic and hospital operations.

Kevin Scoggin ’10 was promoted from COO at Summerville Medical Center in South Carolina to COO at St. David’s South Austin Medical Center.Ìý

Maggie Redmond Lipperini ’11, Executive Director of Orthopedics and Neurosciences at Regional Hospital of Scranton, PA, has been awarded a Fellowship in the American College of Healthcare Executives.Ìý

Erin Pike Blair ’12 was promoted Director of Professional Services of Oncology and Orthopedic Services at Baylor Medical Center at McKinney in McKinney, TX.

Alex Carruth ’12 and wife, Stacey, recently welcomed their fourth child, Liam. In addition, Alex was named Regional Operations Manager for Trumpet Behavioral Health in Denver, CO.Ìý

Christina Carni Rasmussen B.S. ’10, M.S.-HCAD ’12 was promoted to a Manager at Ernst & Young in Health Advisory in Dallas, TX.

Josh Cameron ’14 was selected as Operations Analyst at the Regional Quality Office of Baptist Health System in San Antonio, TX.

Christopher Loumeau ’14 was promoted to an ACO Manager at Leavitt Partners in Salt Lake City, UT.

Art HerreraÌý’15 was named Director of Neuroscience & Orthopedics Service Lines at Methodist Health System in Dallas, TX.

Brandon Maenius ’15 was promoted to Manager of Implementation for the Digital Health Office of Baylor Scott & White Health in Dallas, TX.

Kelsey Vasquez B.A. ’13, M.S.-HCAD ’15 was promoted to Chief of Staff to the President and CEO at Memorial Hermann Health System in Houston, TX.
